In 1860, the family is living in Ward 6, Providence, RI. In 1870, the family is living in Ward 7, Providence, RI. Jeremiah, the father of Alpheus, is living with them in both censuses.

I am not sure that Francis is their son, as he seems older than the other children, and was born before the marriage. (needs more research)

Alpheus married Rebecca Potter Remington 14 Jun 1857, Providence, RI. Rebecca (daughter of Samuel Tower Remington and Rebecca W. Potter) was born 16 Dec 1836; died 25 Dec 1891; was buried , Grace Church Cemetery, Elmwood Ave., Providence, RI. [Group Sheet]

In 1870, Jeremiah Waterman is aged 54, a stable keeper, living in Providence Ward 7 with his son Alpheus and family.

The RI Cemetery Database has his middle initial as S.

Some information on the names of Samuel's wife and children was first obtained from "The Remington Family," compiled by Martha A. Benns, and from Patricia L. Stormo's online data at Rootsweb. I supplemented these sources with some dates from the RI Cemetery Database, census data, and further research.

In the 1850 Federal Census, this family is living at Cranston, RI: Samuel G. (T) 44, Rebecca W. 42, Rebecca P. 13, Samuel T. 8, Peleg R. 6, and Mary 75 (Samuel's mother).

In 1880 they are still at Cranston, in Pawtuxet Village. Samuel & Rebecca are 75 & 72; with them are Peleg & Emma.

From the Providence Journal, Monday AM, 11 Oct 1880: "In Pawtuxet on the 10th inst., Captain Samuel T. Remington, in the 75th year of his age. Funeral at the church on Wednesday, 13th inst., at 1 o'clock. Relatives and friends invited."

Samuel married Rebecca W. Potter 9 Oct 1828. Rebecca (daughter of William Anson Potter and Sarah Unknown) was born 13 Jan 1808; died 3 Mar 1887, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Some genealogies have his death month as January, while others say April. The gravestone says April; however, since this was his birth month, it could be a mistake. The age at death supports January as the birth month.

From the records of the First Baptist Church of Providence, RI: Peleg Remington June 27, 1805, E (experience?) Nov. 16, 1806, L (letter?) To Pawtuxet church. (This may or may not have been this particular Peleg)

Peleg may have had a wife named Amy Field between Sally (Unknown) and Mary Tower. Warwick Deaths, Vol. I (at Warwick City Hall) records the death of a John P. Remington on 30 June 1870, age 72, son of Peleg Remington & Amy Field. She may have died in childbirth, after which Peleg married Mary Tower in 1799. I have not been able to discover another Peleg of this time period who could have been the father of John P., but certainly there may have been one (needs more research).

There is also a marriage recorded at Providence's West Side Church: Peleg Remington & Phebe Field, of William, 24 May 1795. This, of course, adds to the confusion, suggesting that perhaps a clerk or informant wrote Amy instead of Phebe in the Warwick death record, as the mother of John P. However, it may have been another Peleg who married Phebe Field, as the Providence Phenix reported the death of a Mrs. Phebe Remington in her 46th year, 4 Feb 1822, at Cranston.

The RI Cemetery Database has his year of birth as c. 1765; Red MacDougall's online family tree at [redfish@netrevolution.com] and at Rootsweb's Worldconnect shows his date of birth as 22 April 1764 (in Pawtuxet); the Roger Williams book says about 1760.

Please read the notes for his four possible (?) wives. This needs further research.

It was not unheard of for a man to be married four times. Benjamin Remington of Cowesett had four wives, and his brother Jonathan (my ancestor) had three. No doubt there are many other examples.

He may be the Peleg Remington who signed a petition to establish a Masonic Lodge at Pawtuxet, 26 Apr 1805, at Col. Bowen's house.

He was probably the Peleg Remington who was a witness in a US Supreme Court case in 1807, Smith v. Carrington:

Peleg married Mary Tower 9 Sep 1799. Mary (daughter of Ichabod Tower and Mary Pullen) was born 22 Oct 1775; died 25 Apr 1872, Pawtuxet, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 Federal Census, Mary Remington is living with her son Samuel & family at Cranston, RI.

Mary died at age 96 y 6 m 3 d.

Providence Journal of Friday AM, 26 Apr 1872: "In Pawtuxet, April 25th, Mrs. Mary T. Remington, widow of the late Capt. Peleg Remington, in the 97th year of her age. Funeral will take place on Saturday, 27th inst., at 1 PM, from the Baptist Church, Pawtuxet. Relatives and friends are invited to attend."
