His birth record appears to say 12 Sep 1905, but the year was changed to 1904, with 4 being written over the 5. The date of record is 8 Feb 1905. The birthplace is given as Goffstown.

At the time of his marriage to Olive Porter, Arthur at age 19 (actually 17) was a candy-maker and Olive at age 20 was an office girl. At the time of his marriage at age 22 to Elizabeth King, Arthur was a barber. The marriage record says it was his first marriage, but it wasn't.

According to Michael Edward Remington's genealogy, William A. Remington was married seven times. His wives were: Mary Bartlett, Nancy Unknown, Olive Porter, Elizabeth King, Pearl Agee, Shirley Hibbs, & Carol Unknown. I don't know if this is accurate; I have found the above two marriage records, one divorce record and his census records as below.

There is a divorce record for Mary J. Remington from William A. Remington, residence Manchester, NH, 1 Mar 1927 for reason of extreme cruelty. The marriage was 22 Aug 1924 at Boylston, MA. I am making an assumption that she was Mary Bartlett, as given in the marriage record of son William John Remington.

In the Federal Census of 1930, William Remington, age 23 NH, is living at Bridgeport, Fairfield Co., CT. He is married to Nancy, age 22 Scotland. With them are Jean 29 & Margaret 26 Lindsey, sisters-in-law, both born in Scotland.

In 1940 William & Nancy Remington, ages 35 and 31, are living in Bronx, New York. He was born NH, she in CT; he is a salesman.

William married Mary J. Bartlett 22 Aug 1924, Boylston, MA; divorced 1 Mar 1927. Mary (daughter of Ernest Bartlett) was born Abt 1905; died 2 Sep 1954, Boston, MA. [Group Sheet]

I obtained the marriage information from the divorce record. I found Mary's maiden name on the marriage record of son William John Remington. The reason for the divorce was extreme cruelty.

According to Michael Edward Remington's genealogy, Arthur Edward Remington was born 9 Jun 1881. However, he was already age 2 in the 1880 Federal Census. In addition, the 1900 Federal Census gives his birth date as June 1877. Consequently, I am using the year 1877 as his birth year, pending further research.

In 1910, the family is all together in Manchester, NH, including grandparents, two sons and their wives, and the three grandchildren.

In 1930 the family is at Manchester, NH, as follows (all surname Remington): Noris 51 RI, Laverna 42 MA, Walter 24 NH, Harold 22 NH, William J. 4 and 3/12 NH (says son but he is their grandson), Penn 82 MA (father), and Julia 82 MA (mother). (Norris is Laverna's maiden name.)

His birthplace is given as Providence in the birth record of son William.

Arthur married Laverna S. Norris 4 Aug 1903. Laverna (daughter of Dennisen S. Norris and Eliza M. Newcomb) was born 17 Apr 1887, Clinton, MA; died 18 Mar 1956, Manchester, NH. [Group Sheet]

In the 1940 census, Laverna Remington is a widow age 52, living in Manchester, NH. Grandson William J. Remington 14 is with her.

In the 1880 Federal Census, William P. & Julia Remington are living at Pawtucket, Providence Co., RI. They have four children: Etta B. 8, Alice M. 6, William L. 3, & Arthur E. 2.

In the 1900 Federal Census, the family is still living in Pawtucket, RI, at 44 Newberry St. William is 53, Julia is 47, Alice is 26, William is 24, and Arthur is 22. Their birth months and years are given, also.

In the 1910 Federal Census, William P., Julia A., and the two sons and daughters-in-law, as well as three grandchildren, are living together at Manchester, Hillsborough Co., NH.

In 1930 the family is at Manchester, NH, as follows (all surname Remington): Noris 51 RI, Laverna 42 MA, Walter 24 NH, Harold 22 NH, William J. 4 and 3/12 NH (says son but he is their grandson), Penn 82 MA (father), and Julia 82 MA (mother).

Ancestry.com's Pawtucket City Directories 1890-1892 lists the following: "William P. Remington, S. B. Havens & Co.'s, driver, house 20 Elm." This is undoubtedly William Penn Remington (see his occupation in the 1880 census). His employer was S. B. Havens & Co., Restaurant, Caterers and Confectioners, 176 Main Street. This was "the largest catering, confectionery and restaurant business in Pawtucket" [RI].

William married Julia Ann Merrill 1871. Julia (daughter of Stillman J. Merrill and Sophronia Harriman) was born 26 Feb 1853, Goffstown, NH; died 27 Sep 1932, NH. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 Federal Census, William & Emily are living at Blackstone, Worcester Co., MA. They have one son, William P., 3.

In the 1860 Federal census, William & Emily are ages 44 & 43, living at Burrillville, Providence Co., RI. With them are William J. (P?) Remington 13, and Walter S. Remington, 1.

In the 1870 Federal Census, William & Emily are ages 54 & 53, still living at Burrillville. William P. is 23 and Walter S. is 11. They are next door to Eddy & Emily Keach. Possibly Eddy is a brother of Emily Remington. This needs more research.
