    Notes:

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Mahala Paine is age 35, living at Smithfield, RI, in the Aldrich household. Also there are her mother, sisters, brother-in-law, and nephews & nieces, for a total of nine individuals.

    In 1860 she is Mahala Lewis, age 45, living at Mendon, Worcester Co., MA. She has remarried to Griffin Lewis, age 47 in the census.

    In 1870 they are back in Smithfield, RI, ages 66 & 55, and in 1880 they are at Woonsocket, RI, as are the other two sisters.

    Notes from Prudence Fish, a descendant: "Mahala Remington married Smith Paine who later abandoned her and apparently went to Missouri where he had another family."

    After the death of her second husband, "she moved from Smithfield, Rhode Island, to Oxford, Maine, and lived with her only child, George Paine, and his wife and son."

    We have not yet been able to figure out who Caleb's parents were. According to his children's data in the 1880 census, he was born in RI.

    This household apprears to be listed in the 1820 census at Smithfield, RI, with Caleb Remington as head of family; but no male of his age is included in the data. Here are the totals: 2 free white males under 10, 1 free white male 10-16 (Lyman?), 2 free white females under 10 (Martha & Mahala?), 2 free white females 16-26 (Zilpha & Ann Eliza?), and 1 free white female 26-45 (wife Martha). Where is Caleb, and who are the two young males?

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Martha Remington is age 79, living at Smithfield, RI. She is living with Robert & Martha Aldrich and their two children, Orville & Ellen. Also in the household are Mahala (Remington) Paine, Ann (Remington) Follett, and her two children, William & Lucia.
