Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Ruth Remington was born Abt 1790 (daughter of Joseph Remington, III and Alcey or Ann Unknown); died 27 Jun 1867; was buried , Manchester Cemetery, Washington St., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

MANCHESTER Ruth, wife of Stephen, Sept. 5, 1824 dis to New ch.

Apparently Ruth received a letter of dismissal from the Coventry church (probably Maple Root) to a new (branch) church.

Ruth married Stephen Manchester 8 Oct 1820, Cranston, RI. Stephen (son of Joseph Manchester and Mary Arnold) was born 14 Feb 1780; died 19 Feb 1852; was buried , Manchester Cemetery, Washington St., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Manchester Stephen, of Joseph, of Coventry, and Ruth Remington, of Joseph, of Scituate; m. at Cranston by Eld. Pardon Tillinghast, Oct. 8, 1820.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Joseph Remington, III was born Abt 1750 (son of Joseph Remington, II and Elizabeth Collins); died Bef 20 Feb 1813.

    Notes:

He is referred to as Joseph Remington, Jr., in some of the Scituate town records.

I have estimated the birth years of several of Joseph's children. His will mentions his wife, Ann, and the following children: Daniel, Robert (under 21), Mary, Ruth, Sophia, Susanna, & Betsey (last three under 18). Executors were sons James & Jeremiah.

Many genealogies show Joseph Lippitt Remington as husband of Alice and father of these children. However, information provided by Barbara Chase has shown this to be erroneous. A deed found in Scituate Land Evidence Bk 11 p 473, dated 20 Feb 1813, mentions Elizabeth Remington, widow of Joseph Sr.; Alice Remington widow of Joseph Jr.; and James Remington of Scituate and his wife Isabel. This transaction involved the sale of land to Ebenezer, Stephen, & Abraham Burlingame.

He is very possibly the Joseph Remington mentioned in the following list:

An Historical Sketch of The Town of Scituate, R.I.; Part 4: "Scituate was not invaded, but she was called upon, and responded nobly to the call, to march her troops to the port. The British, on Sunday, Dec. 8, 1776, landed and took possession of Rhode Island, and remained there until Oct. 25, 1779, during which time the inhabitants were greatly oppressed. In a list of Capt. Knight's company, April 2, 1775, the day after the Lexington battle, are found the following names: Joseph Knight, captain; Samuel Wilbor, Benjamin Wood, Isaac Horton, John Hill, Nathan Walker, James Parker, John Bennet, jr., Jeremiah Almy, Joseph Remington, Nathan Ralfe, John I. Kilton, Jonathan Knight, jr., Joseph Briggs, David Knight, Joseph Collins, William Taylor John Manchester, Edward Bennett, Thomas Parker, John Edwards, jr., Simeon Wilbor, Isaiah Austin, Samuel Eldridge, Christopher Knight, Samuel Hopkins, Benajah Bosworth, Obadiah Rolfe, Ezekiel Wood, Caleb Fisk, doctor, Jolin Phillips, Constant Graves, Stukely Thornton, James Andrews, jr., Christopher Collins, Joseph Bennet, Thomas Knight, Peleg Colvin, Eleazor Westcott, Caleb Steere, Collins Roberts, Daniel Fisk, William Knight, Nathan Franklin, Uriah Franklin, jr., Ephriam Edwards, Stephen Edwards, Francis Fuller, jr., Benjamin Whitmore, William Stafford, Daniel Angell, Furmer Tanner -- fifty-two in all."

Joseph married Alcey or Ann Unknown Abt 1777. Alcey was born Abt 1755; died Aft 15 Mar 1815. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Alcey or Ann Unknown was born Abt 1755; died Aft 15 Mar 1815.

    Notes:

Joseph's will mentions his wife, Ann (transcription only -- I have not seen the original).

Grandson Robert Knight Remington did name one of his daughters Alice.

    Notes:

I have estimated their year of marriage, as no marriage record has yet been found.

    Children:
    1. Mary Remington was born Abt 1778.
    2. Daniel Remington was born Abt 1780.
    3. Henry H. Remington was born Abt 1782; died 29 Aug 1801, Warwick, RI.

    8. Betsey Remington was born Abt 1795.
    9. Sophia Remington was born Abt 1798; died 10 Sep 1881; was buried , Russell Smith Lot, Silk Lane, Scituate, RI.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Joseph Remington, II was born 21 Jan 1720/21, Warwick, RI (son of Joseph Remington, I and Margaret Burlingame); died 6 Jul 1800, Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

This particular Joseph Remington married Elizabeth and lived his whole life at Scituate, RI. Therefore, he is not the one who married Innocent and later moved to Tiverton, RI, as shown in many genealogies.

The following information came from a Remington descendant, Barbara Chase:

On 1 Oct 1765 Joseph Remington sold land parcel 4A in SE part of Scituate where grantees planned to erect a furnace (Stephen Hopkins, Israel Wilkinson, Caleb Arnold, Nicholas Brown, Joseph Brown, Moses Brown, Hob Hawkins). His wife Elizabeth Remington released rights to the land. (Sc Land Ev Bk 5 pp 532-533)

On 25 Jan 1771 (Cr Deed Bk 2 p 186) Joseph Remington of Scituate sold land in Cranston to Thomas Potter of Cranston; mother Margaret Remington released rights.

On 2 Sep 1790, Thomas Arnold of Providence sued Joseph Remington of Scituate; levied on homestead farm of Joseph Remington near Furnace Hope, next to land of Joseph Remington Jr. -- evidently meaning his son (Sc Land Ev Bk 8 p 425).

Date of death - Scituate, RI Probate Records; Vol. 4; p. 20 - Minutes of the Probate Court - 25 Oct 1800 - "Joseph Remington of Scituate, yeoman, departed this life on the 6th Day of July last past and died intestate" . . . Court appointed Joseph Remington Esq, s/o deceased, administrator of sd estate.

I have made an assumption that his wife was Elizabeth Collins, named as Elizabeth Remington in her father will of 1757.

Joseph married Elizabeth Collins Abt 1749. Elizabeth (daughter of Thankful Collins and Sarah Gorton) was born 26 Jan 1728/29, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died Aft 15 Mar 1815. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Elizabeth Collins was born 26 Jan 1728/29, Warwick, Kent Co., RI (daughter of Thankful Collins and Sarah Gorton); died Aft 15 Mar 1815.

    Notes:

She is mentioned in her father's will dated 14 Feb 1757 as daughter Elizabeth Remington.

I have made an assumption that her husband was Joseph Remington II who had a wife named Elizabeth.

    Children:
    1. 2. Joseph Remington, III was born Abt 1750; died Bef 20 Feb 1813.
    2. Sarah Remington was born Abt 1752; died 11 Nov 1820; was buried , Historical Cemetery 83, Seven Mile Rd., Scituate, RI.
    3. Jonathan Remington was born Abt 1754; died Aft 1810.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Joseph Remington, I was born Abt 1694, Portsmouth or Warwick, RI (son of Thomas REMINGTON, I and Mary ALLEN); died 22 Sep 1763, Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

A Scituate deed records a land transaction between James Tucker and Joseph Remington, both of Warwick, dated 15 Oct 1731. Mr. Tucker sold Mr. Remington land in Scituate on the banks of the Pawtuxet River, bounded by Othniel Gorton's land. Witnesses were Ezekiel Warner and Samuel Barton, and the deed was recorded 3 Jan 1732. Interestingly, Othniel's wife was Mercy Burlingame, aunt to Margaret Burlingame, Joseph Remington's wife. (Scituate Deeds, Births, & Marriages, Vol. 1, p. 48)

Presumably the family moved from Warwick to Scituate around this time.

On 15 March 1743, Joseph Remington, of Providence, deeded to his son Thomas Remington, of Scituate, and his heirs, a parcel of land in Scituate bounded by the Seven Mile Line, westerly northwesterly and northeasterly of the Pawtuxet River, northeasterly of Edward Potter's land.

Joseph's will mentions his wife Margarett; sons Thomas, Joseph, & Lippitt; and daughter Martha Collins. If Stephen and Margaret were actually his children, they must have died before the date of his will. Daughter Margaret may have been the Margaret Remington who married Ebenezer Allin on 21 May 1761 (this needs more research to confirm).

From Barbara Chase: "Date of death -- Cranston, RI Town Council Bk 1; p. 170 'Joseph Remington of Cranston . . . yeoman who departed this Life on 22nd Day of September AD 1763 . . . ' His wife Margaret as sole executrix of his LWT was granted letters of administration . . . If you follow the land records you can easily place Joseph & Margaret Remington and most of their children in what is now the southeast corner of Scituate and the southwest corner of Cranston. They are buried there. Their lands were on both sides of Seven Mile Rd. (then portion of the original 17th century Seven Mile Line) that led to records in both towns."

Joseph married Margaret Burlingame 29 Sep 1717, Warwick, RI. Margaret (daughter of Thomas Burlingame and Martha Lippitt) was born 1696, Cranston, RI; died Aft 25 Jan 1771. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Margaret Burlingame was born 1696, Cranston, RI (daughter of Thomas Burlingame and Martha Lippitt); died Aft 25 Jan 1771.

    Notes:

Margaret Remington is mentioned in the 6 Mar 1719 will of her grandmother, Mary Lippitt, widow of Moses. She is also mentioned in the 5 June 1756 will of her father Thomas.

From Barbara Chase: Margaret was still living as of 25 Jan 1771 - Joseph Remington of Scituate to Thomas Potter of Cranston; 15A in town of Cranston; bd'd on W by Christopher Lippitt and N by Furnace Rd.; Margaret Remington, mother of sd Joseph releases rights . . . (Cranston, RI Dd Bk 2; p. 186).

    Children:
    1. Thomas Remington, Sr. was born 24 Feb 1718/19, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1774.
    2. 4. Joseph Remington, II was born 21 Jan 1720/21, Warwick, RI; died 6 Jul 1800, Scituate, RI.
    3. Martha Remington was born 18 Mar 1724/25, Warwick, RI.
    4. Lippitt Remington was born 17 Dec 1729, Warwick, RI.
    5. Stephen Remington was born 25 Jan 1733/34, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.
    6. Margaret Remington was born 20 Feb 1736/37, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.

  3. 10.  Thankful Collins was born 27 Aug 1700, Warwick, Kent Co., RI (son of Thomas Collins and Abigail House); died Between Feb and Sep 1757, Warwick, Kent Co., RI.

    Notes:

The will of Thankful Collins of Warwick, yeoman, is dated 14 Feb 1757 and was proved 12 Sep 1757. It mentions his son Thomas; and daughters Elizabeth Remington, Sarah Collins, & Lydia Collins.

There is a notation in James N. Arnold's VRs concerning three of the children of Thankful -- Elizabeth, Sarah, & Thomas -- concerning a birth (or baptism?) at Narragansett on 12 May 1740.

Thankful married Sarah Gorton 19 May 1728, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Sarah (daughter of Samuel Gorton and Elizabeth Collins) was born Abt 1703, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died 19 Nov 1732, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Sarah Gorton was born Abt 1703, Warwick, Kent Co., RI (daughter of Samuel Gorton and Elizabeth Collins); died 19 Nov 1732, Warwick, Kent Co., RI.
    Children:
