Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Maud Remington was born May 1898, IL (daughter of Dennis Remington and Alma Hedquist Olson); died Aft Jan 1920.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Dennis Remington was born Abt Jul 1841, MI (son of Chauncey Remington and Mariah Lamphere); died 15 May 1907, Chicago, IL; was buried , Elmwood Cemetery, Chicago, IL.

    Notes:

Apparently Dennis and his brother Cooley were named for the town physician, Dennis Cooly, who lived nearby in Washington, Macomb Co., MI, in 1850 (age 61, born in MA).

Although the age is off about five years, he is probably the Dennis Remington, age 53, living at Chicago (Ward 8), Cook Co., IL, in the 1900 Federal Census. His place of birth (MI), and parents' place of birth (NY), are correct, however, agreeing with the data on the 1850 & 1860 censuses. His wife, Alma, is age 32 (?), b. Sweden. According to the census, Dennis & Alma have been married 9 years. They have four children in the household: May, age 7 (Apr 1893); Grace, age 5 (Feb 1895); Maud, age 2 (May 1898); & Joseph, age 4 months (Feb 1900); all b IL.

By 1910, Dennis is gone. See notes for Alma.

Dennis married Alma Hedquist Olson 27 Jun 1890, Chicago, Cook Co., IL. Alma was born Abt Mar 1865, Varmland, Sweden; died 1 Feb 1942; was buried , Elmwood Cemetery, Chicago, IL. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Alma Hedquist Olson was born Abt Mar 1865, Varmland, Sweden; died 1 Feb 1942; was buried , Elmwood Cemetery, Chicago, IL.

    Notes:

In the 1910 Federal Census, Alma Remington is a widow age 42, living at 1713 Newberry Ave., in Ward 9, Chicago, Cook Co., IL. With her are Grace, 15; Maud, 11; & Joseph, 10.

In 1920, Alma Remington is age 49 and still at Chicago. They are at 2800 Emerald Ave., next to or with John & May (Remington) Riplow and their five children. According to the census data, Alma immigrated in 1888. In the household with her are daughter Maud, 21, and son Joseph, 19. Alma is a practical nurse and Joseph is a chauffeur.

Alma's maiden name was sent to me by a descendant, Robert MacDonald.

Alma Olson came over here on Jun 23, 1888 I believe from Sweden via Liverpool England into New York. (source: Edwin Groetsema)

    Children:
    1. May Remington was born Apr 1893, IL; died Feb 1949.
    2. Grace Maria Remington was born Feb 1895, IL; died 20 Feb 1970.
    3. 1. Maud Remington was born May 1898, IL; died Aft Jan 1920.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Chauncey Remington was born 7 Feb 1810, Rush, NY (son of Daniel "Dan" Remington and Hannah Goff); died Bef 1 Jun 1870, MI.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Chauncey (Chaney or Chancy), age 45, and his wife Mariah, age 38, are living in Washington, Macomb Co., MI. In the household are eight children: Eliza 17, Mary 12, Cooley 11, Dennis 9, Porter 7, Joseph 5, Electa 3, and Andrew 1. Possibly another daughter, Hannah age 14, is living with the Burlingham family in town (needs more research).

In the 1860 Federal Census, Chancy & Maria Remington, ages 49 & 46, are living at Chesterfield, Macomb Co., MI. In the household are: Hannah 24, Cooley 21, Dennis 19, Potter 17, Joseph 16, Amelia 11, & Emily 8. Chancey is a carpenter & joiner; daughter Hannah is a domestic; and the three oldest sons are sailors. Amelia must have been written as Andrew in 1850 (?).

According to a descendant, Marge Graves, Chauncey died about 1867.

Chauncey married Mariah Lamphere Abt 1832, NY. Mariah was born 1812, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1870, MI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Mariah Lamphere was born 1812, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1870, MI.

    Notes:

In the 1870 Federal Census, "Maria Remington," age 56 b. NY, is living with Norman & Polly Remington and their children at Ray, Macomb Co., MI. Probably this is Mariah, widowed.

    9. Amelia Remington was born Abt 1849, MI.
    10. Emily Remington was born Abt 1852, MI.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Daniel "Dan" Remington was born 1 Mar 1775, Suffield, Hartford County, CT (son of Elihu Remington, Sr. and Experience Hastings); died Abt 1871, Caro, MI.

    Notes:

According to notes in the Special Collections at NE Hist & Gen Soc, Dan Remington and his family went to Rush, Monroe Co., NY, in 1804 from Suffield, CT. At that time there was a colony formed consisting of families from CT, including Goff, Brainerd, Tupper, and others.

History of Niagara County, NY, pub 1878, p. 293, states that Dan Remington came to the home of his brother-in-law Charles Goff in Niagara Township in 1825. Later he removed to Michigan, settling in Macomb County, probably in 1836. (noted in same source as above)

This manuscript at NE Hist & Gen Soc has Dan's birth year as 1774; and says that he and Hannah had fourteen children, four of whom died young; however, only 9 are listed in the file; the list includes an Abner, a Justin, and a Jesse. However, I am not sure about the accuracy of these names in this family.

In the 1850 Federal Census, "Dan" Remington b CT is age 75, a farmer, living with his son Norman and family at Ray, Macomb Co., MI.

In 1860 Dan Remington is age 85 MA, a shoemaker, living with his son Joseph in Shelby, Macomb Co., MI.

I have not found him listed in the 1870 census.

According to the History of Macomb County, MI (Google Books), Daniel died at age 96, "from the effects of an injury in a sawmill from a flying slab."

Daniel married Hannah Goff 6 Sep 1801, Middle Haddam, CT. Hannah (daughter of Charles Goff and Deborah Hill) was born 11 Aug 1781, CT; died 28 Jan 1834, Washington, Macomb Co., MI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Hannah Goff was born 11 Aug 1781, CT (daughter of Charles Goff and Deborah Hill); died 28 Jan 1834, Washington, Macomb Co., MI.

    Notes:

Hannah Remington is mentioned in her father's will (see notes for Charles Goff).

On the 1870 Federal Census in Michigan, her son Norman gave her birthplace as CT.

    Children:
    1. Elizabeth Betsy Remington was born Abt 1804, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.
    2. Lydia Ann Remington was born Abt 1806, NY.
