  1. 1.  Captain John LUTHER was born Between 1595 and 1605, Germany or Dorsetshire, England; died 1645, Delaware Bay.

    Notes:

There is some uncertainty as to whether John was from England or Germany. Some family researchers say he came from Great Canford, Dorsetshire, England, arriving at Massachusetts Bay around the time of John Winthrop's arrival in 1630. However, there is a family tradition passed down by some descendants that Henry was from Germany, and came to Boston on a Dutch ship in 1635. For a full discussion of this, see pages 30 - 33 in "The Luther Genealogy." (available at the Swansea, MA, library and elsewhere)

Capt. John Luther's name first appears in the Taunton Purchase of 1637, in which he is listed as one of the 46 purchasers of land in a transaction between Elizabeth Pole's (Poole's) company and Massasoit. Miss Pole was from Dorchester, England. John Luther was assigned 6 shares, consisting of about 9 (or 90) acres in Swansea.

In 1642 John left Swansea and became one of the first settlers of Gloucester. A mariner employed by a Boston merchant, he was killed by Indians on a trading voyage to Delaware Bay.

John married Elizabeth UNKNOWN Abt 1635. [Group Sheet]
