Both Harvey and his father Nelson served in the Civil War. Harvey entered military service Dec 1864, in the 9th Cavalry, Co. 1, at age 16. He served continuously at least 2 years and 7 months. (source: Delaware Co., NY, historical web site)

In the 1880 Federal Census, Harvey & Sarah, ages 31 & 34, are living at Hamden, Delaware Co., NY. With them are their three children and Harvey's father, Nelson, age 58.

Harvey — Sarah Reynolds. Sarah was born Between Jun 1843 and 1846, NY; died Aft 15 Apr 1910. [Group Sheet]

In the 1900 Federal Census, Sara Remington is a widow, age 56, living at Franklin, Delaware Co., NY. With her is single daughter Cora, 22.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Nelson Remington was born Abt 1822 (son of Samuel Remington and Lois Wattles); died Aft 1 Jun 1880.

    Notes:

Nelson's occupation was a miller, so he most likely took over his father's business, the flour mill.

Both Nelson and his son Harvey served in the Civil War.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Nelson 26, Mary H. 30, & Harvey B. Remington 1, are living at Colesville, Broome Co., NY. They are next to a family named Wykoff.

In 1860 the family is at Franklin, Delaware Co., NY. Nelson & Mary are ages 38 & 40. They have two children, Harvey B. 11 & Julia E. 8 (all b NY). Also in the same town are Seba Remington (presumably Nelson's brother) and his wife Julia.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Nelson apparently has remarried to Lucretia, and they are living at Franklin; with them is son Harvey 21. Nelson is 49 and Lucretia is 32.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Nelson Remington is age 58 NY, living with son Harvey & family at Hamden, Delaware Co., NY. Census data shows his parents as being born in Eng. & CT, but perhaps he said his father was born somewhere in "New England."

Nelson married Mary H. Spoor 11 Sep 1845, West Meredith, Delaware Co., NY. Mary was born Abt Feb 1820, NY; died 8 Aug 1860, Croton, Delaware Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

    Mary died at age 40 y 6 m.

    2. Julia E. Remington was born Abt 1852, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Samuel Remington was born 1783, VT (son of Uriah Remington and Sally Camfield); died 24 Mar 1859, West Meredith, Delaware Co., NY; was buried , West Meredith Cemetery, Delaware Co., NY.

    Notes:

Boyd Scott Remington's chart places a Samuel in the family group of Joshua & Eunice Remington, but I question whether he belongs there. According to the "Oliver M. Remington Bible Records" (National DAR Records; referenced in "A Remington Family History" by Lois Remington Smith, p. C-2), Uriah & Sally Remington had a son named Samuel, so it seems more likely that these dates belong to that family. Consequently, I am assigning these dates to this particular Samuel. (My research at the Delaware Co., NY, web site and in census data seems to confirm this.)

The 1810 Federal Census at Delaware Co., NY, lists him as Samuel Ramington.

In the 1820 Federal Census at Meredith, Delaware Co., NY, Samuel Remington's household consists of: 3 males<10, 1 male 26 - 45 (Samuel), 2 females<10, 2 females 10-16, and 1 female 26-45 (wife). This data suggests that at that time they had two daughters (names?) born c 1805-1810, and two more daughters (probably Nancy & Lucinda) and three sons born c 1810-1820 (possibly Clark, Seba, & Wiliam).

In the 1830 census, Samuel is still at Meredith. His household consists of: 1 male<5, 1 male 5<10, 2 males 15<20, 1 male 20<30, 1 male 40<50, 1 female<5, 1 female 5<10, 1 female 10<15, 1 female 20<30, 1 female 40<50, and 1 female 60<70. This suggests that the family had a son and a daughter born c 1825-1830, a son and a daughter born c 1820-1825, one daughter born c 1815-1820, two sons born c 1810-1815, one son and one daughter born c 1800-1810, in addition to Samuel and his wife (40-50), and one older woman (60-70) who may have been a mother or mother-in-law. It seems likely that the household of 1830 included Samuel's married son Seba and his wife and their young children.

In the 1840 census, Samuel and Seba Remington are both listed as heads of households, probably living next to each other. Samuel's household consists of: 2 males 15-20 (Nelson and Martin?), 1 male 20-30 (possibly George, about 20 - 25), 1 male 30-40 (possibly William, about 27), 1 male 60-70 (Samuel), 1 female 10-15 (probably Delia), 1 female 15-20 (?), 2 females 20-30 (Lucinda and ?), and 1 female 50-60 (his wife).

In the 1850 Federal Census, Samuel Remington (surname illegible), age 79 VT, is living at Meredith, Delaware Co., NY. In the household with him are Marcus 66 CT (female), and Delia 21 NY. Also, in the same dwelling but different family group are Linus & Nancy Bronson, ages 36? & 33?. Nancy is probably Samuel's daughter. They are all living next to William & Caroline Remington and family, and on the other side of William are Seba & Delia (should be Julia?) Remington and family.

"Records of the Supervisors of the County of Delaware October 5th, 1813" transcribed by Linda Ogborn, includes notations of payments made to the town account by Daniel Remington and Samuel Remington. (source: Delaware Co., NY, historical web site)

"Sam Remington" had a mill -- probably a flour mill -- in Delaware County in the 1820s. The 1850 census shows his occupation as miller.

Samuel married Lois Wattles Abt 1805. Lois was born Abt 1786, CT; died 1865, Delaware Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Lois Wattles was born Abt 1786, CT; died 1865, Delaware Co., NY.

    Notes:

In the 1860 Federal Census, Lois Remington, age 74 CT, is living with her (presumed) son William and his family at Meredith, Delaware Co., NY.

In 1850 her name is given as Marcus (female), age 66 CT. Perhaps the census taker was hard of hearing. The family surname is poorly scribbled, also.

    Children:
    1. Clark Remington was born Abt 1810, Meredith, Delaware Co., NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880, NY.
    2. Seba Remington was born Abt 1812, Delaware County, NY; died 4 Jun 1864, Croton, Delaware Co., NY.
    3. William Remington was born Abt 1813, Meredith, Delaware Co., NY; died 8 Oct 1869, Croton, Delaware Co., NY.
    4. Nancy Remington was born Between 1817 and 1818, NY.
    5. Lucinda B. Remington was born 30 May 1819, West Meredith, Delaware Co., NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.
    6. 4. Nelson Remington was born Abt 1822; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.
    7. Martin Remington was born Abt 1824, NY; died 26 Jun 1896, Deposit, Delaware Co., NY.
    8. Delia Remington was born Abt 1829, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1860.
