(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

I have made an assumption that William belongs in this family group, for two reasons: he is living in the same geographical area as Wager's sister Penelope and Wager's assumed son Richard M. Remington; also, his first two children appear to be named after his parents.

Update: the death record gives his father's name as Wagar Remington.

His middle initial is given as both L and M in different censuses; I have used M because it is in two censuses. He was probably named after William Martin, father of Mary Martin who married Wager Hull and Gershom Remington.

In the 1850 Federal Census, William L. & Antoinette Remington, ages 40 & 41, are living at Rose, Wayne Co., NY. They have seven children in the home: Wager G. 16, Susan 14, George !2, Wm. M. 10, Chas A. 6, Silas K. 4, & Anna 2.

In the 1860 Federal Census, the family is at Savannah, Wayne Co., NY: William 50, Ann J. 51, Charles 16, Silas R. 14, Anna 12, & Hannah C. 10. William's (assumed) brother, Richard, is also living at Savannah with his family in 1860. Both of these families have a son named Wager; these two cousins are working in Butler, Wayne Co., NY, along with George, another of William's sons.

In the 1870 Federal Census, William M. Remington is 60 and his wife "Agmett" is 61. With them are Anna 21 & Hannah 17. They are living at Boston, Ionia Co., MI. Next door is son Silas and his wife Emma.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Wm. M. Remington and his wife Ann J. Remington are ages 69 & 70. They are living at Boston, Ionia Co., MI. Next door is son Silas K. Remington and his wife and family. (see notes for Silas)

William married Ann J. Unknown Abt 1833. Ann was born Between 1809 and 1810, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. Wager G. Remington was born Abt 1834, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.
    2. Susan Remington was born Abt 1836, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1870.
    3. George H. Remington was born Abt 1838, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1870.
    4. William M. Remington was born Abt 1840, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1850.
    5. Charles A. Remington was born Abt 1844, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1860.
    6. Silas K. Remington was born Apr 1846, NY; died 1936, CA; was buried , Union Cemetery, Bakersfield, Kern Co., CA.
    7. Anna Remington was born Abt 1848, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1860.
    8. Hannah C. Remington was born Abt 1850, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1860.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Charles Wager Remington was born 19 Mar 1785, Jamestown, RI (son of Gershom Remington, Jr. and Mary Martin); died , NY.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

Wager was named after his mother's first husband, Wager Hull. Quite a few boys from Jamestown were named Wager, after Sir Charles Wager, an apprentice to Captain John Hull of Jamestown. Charles Wager later became an officer in the British Royal Navy and was knighted as Sir Charles Wager. His grave is in Westminster Abbey, London, England.

I have made an assumption that some of the Remingtons from Columbia County, NY, belong to this Wager and his supposed wife Susannah. My reasons are two: his sister Penelope settled there and is there in the 1850 census; and, the name Wager Remington is found in two NY families in 1850/1860. Wager is a name from Jamestown, as noted above.

His wife's name was obtained from Rootsweb's Worldconnect. From later census data it appears that a grandson of Wager & Susannah also married a Mosier (Richard M. Remington, Jr, md Elizabeth F. Mosier).

I have made a reasonable assumption that Richard M. Remington, living at Hudson, NY, in the 1850 census, is Wager's son. It seems clear that he was named after his grandfather, Richard Mosher/Mosier. Richard Remington and his wife Jane have a son named Wager H. Remington, undoubtedly named after Wager Hull, as was Richard's father

There is another Remington family, William & Antoinette (or Angenett), who have a son named Wager. It appears that these families are very likely related, simply because two sons from the two families are living/boarding together as farm laborers in the 1860 census. Consequently, I have included William as a son in this family group.

Mary's name was found at Rootsweb's Worldconnect.

Charles married Susannah Mosher Abt 1807. Susannah (daughter of Richard Mosher and Phebe Husted) was born Abt 1785; died , NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Susannah Mosher was born Abt 1785 (daughter of Richard Mosher and Phebe Husted); died , NY.

    Notes:

Susannah's name as wife of Wager Hull Remington came from Rootsweb's Worldconnect (it says she is d/o Richard Mosher & Phebe Husted); this marriage has not been verified.

    Children:
    1. Mary Remington was born Abt 1808.
    2. 1. William M. Remington was born Between 1810 and 1811, NY; died 1 Aug 1892, Boston, Ionia Co., MI.
    3. Richard M. Remington was born Abt 1813, NY; died 28 Dec 1882, Hudson, Columbia Co., NY; was buried , Hudson, Columbia Co., NY.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Gershom Remington, Jr. was born Abt 1740 (son of Gershom Remington and Clemence Battey); died Abt Dec 1792, Jamestown, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.) I am assuming that Gershom Remington, Jr. is a son of Gershom Remington, although he could be just a younger Gershom in the community, son of another Remington. He witnessed the 1762 codicil to the will of John Hull, and the 1771 will of John Martin, father of Hannah (Martin) Remington, wife of Benjamin. He also was mentioned as "Uncle Gershom Remington, Jr." in the 1773 will of Gershom Franklin (son of Mary Franklin) who was headed out to sea on a voyage (Gershom, Jr. had a sister Mary who married George Franklin).

The 1777 RI Military Census lists Gershom Remington, age 16 - 50 A, of East Greenwich.

The Newport Mercury of 17 Apr 1784 reported the marriage of Gresham Remington & Mary Hull, widow, at Jamestown. So, this is a second marriage for Mary. One online source refers to her as Mary Martin, which may well be her maiden name.

Death notice in the Columbian Centinel of 5 Jan 1793: "Gersham Remington, d. in Jamestown." I am assuming this notice is for this particular Gershom Remington. Apparently he died of smallpox -- see notice below.

    ID Number T2007.003.005
    Collection Town Records (Jamestown)
"Meeting announcement, handwritten; warrant for town council meeting to announce Gershom Remington has small pox and to discuss methods to prevent spread of the disease; issued by John Eldred, December 19, 1792."

Gershom married Mary Martin 17 Apr 1784, Jamestown, RI. Mary (daughter of William Martin and Eunice Unknown) was born Abt 1750; died Bef 31 Oct 1812, Washington, Dutchess Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Mary Martin was born Abt 1750 (daughter of William Martin and Eunice Unknown); died Bef 31 Oct 1812, Washington, Dutchess Co., NY.

    Notes:

After their marriage, Wager & Mary (Martin) Hull lived in the "Old Hull Place" on Jamestown. Their home was burned by the British soldiers in December 1775. At the same time Mary's father, William Martin, was killed. A few weeks later Wager died, and Mary went to New York City to stay with some of her husband's relatives. She later married Gershom Remington. The newspaper announcement of her marriage to Gershom says she was Mary Hull, widow.

The will of Mary Gage, relict of David Gage, is registered at Dutchess Co., NY (Abstracts of Wills, Administrations and Guardianships in NY State, 1787-1835; newenglandancestors.org)

In the will she mentiones her daughters Damaris w/o Henry Clapp; Phebe w/o Joseph Doughty; and Sarah Hull; refers to her four youngest children: Hannah Remington, Penelope Remington, Charles Wager Remington, & Mary Remington. Will pvd 31 Oct 1812.

    Children:
    1. 2. Charles Wager Remington was born 19 Mar 1785, Jamestown, RI; died , NY.
    2. Mary Remington was born 4 Jan 1787, Jamestown, RI.
    3. Penelope Remington was born 19 Oct 1789, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 20 Jun 1873, Hudson, Columbia Co., NY; was buried , Hudson City Cemetery, Columbia Co., NY.
    4. Hannah Remington was born Abt 1791.

  3. 6.  Richard Mosher was born 4 May 1759, Dartmouth, Bristol Co., MA.

Richard married Phebe Husted 10 Jul 1783. Phebe was born 31 May 1763. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Phebe Husted was born 31 May 1763.
    Children:
    1. 3. Susannah Mosher was born Abt 1785; died , NY.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Gershom Remington was born 3 Dec 1690, Jamestown, RI (son of Stephen Remington and Penelope Parker); died Aft 1736.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)
The original birth record at Jamestown reads: "Gershum Remmenton sun of Stephen & Pennelipy 3 December 1690."

Land records show Gershom Remington signing transactions with his wife, Clemence, on 31 Dec 1733. Some genealogists have her name as Catherine. Was Catherine a second wife; or, perhaps simply the name was misread (?).

In 1735 Gershom was Ensign of the Militia for Jamestown, and later was promoted to Lieutenant on the resignation of William Battey; again he served in this position in 1736.

Was there another daughter named Aase or Acie? Here is this listing from the RI Cemetery Database:

    REMINGTON AASE 1722c - 29 NOV 1744 JM002

Gershom married Clemence Battey 13 Feb 1712/13, Jamestown, RI. Clemence (daughter of Samson Battey and Dinah Havens) was born 4 Jul 1695, Jamestown, RI; died Aft Dec 1733. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Clemence Battey was born 4 Jul 1695, Jamestown, RI (daughter of Samson Battey and Dinah Havens); died Aft Dec 1733.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)
According to the Jamestown birth record, Clemence was the 4th daughter of Samson & Dinah Battey. As the wife of Gershom Remington, her name has been given as both Clemence and Catherine. I am making an assumption that Gershom's wife was Clemence Battey, whose birth was recorded in the official Jamestown Proprietors Records, Vol. 1, p. 1. The Jamestown birth record has the name as "Clemence Batty." It seems obvious to me that this is the Clemence who married Gershom Remington, especially since they named a daughter Dinah, and Clemence Battey's mother was named Dinah. I have no further proof of her identity, other than this concurrence of data: names, time, and location.

    Notes:

BSR says Gershom married Catherine Clemence on 13 Feb 1713, Jamestown (no source noted). However, in some documents she is referred to as Clemence. Jamestown records identify their children as "of Gershom & Clemens" or Clemence. I have made an assumption that she is Clemence Battey, based on their dates of birth and the given names Clemence & Dinah, found in both the Battey and Remington families.

    Children:
    1. Benedict Remington was born 5 Feb 1714/15, Jamestown, RI; died 22 Nov 1744; was buried , Town Cemetery, Jamestown, RI.
    2. Dinah Remington was born Between 17 Aug 1716 and 1717, Jamestown, RI.
    3. Abigail Remington was born 14 Aug 1718.
    4. Phebe Remington was born Abt 1720, Jamestown, RI.
    5. John Remington was born 7 Feb 1723/24, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 15 Nov 1809, Newport, RI.
    6. Mary Remington was born Abt 1725; died Aft 6 Nov 1773.
    7. Stephen Remington was born Abt 1730.
    8. 4. Gershom Remington, Jr. was born Abt 1740; died Abt Dec 1792, Jamestown, RI.

  3. 10.  William Martin was born Abt 1722 (son of John Martin and Phebe Remington); died Dec 1775, Jamestown, RI.

    Notes:

He may be the William Martin who witnessed the Jamestown wills of David Greene on 21 July 1759, John Hull on 20 Nov 1759 and again the codicil on 30 January 1762, and John Hammett on 9 August 1766.

William married Eunice Unknown Abt 1744. Eunice was born Abt 1725. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Eunice Unknown was born Abt 1725.

    Notes:

Could she have been Eunice Pendleton, mentioned as daughter Eunice Martin in will of Col. Joseph Marin, 1760 Westerly?

    Children:
    1. 5. Mary Martin was born Abt 1750; died Bef 31 Oct 1812, Washington, Dutchess Co., NY.
