The following was posted at genealogy.com, Remington Family Forum:

A biography of Sumner A. Remington is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 824 & 825.

Sumner was born 10 Aug 1871, one of six sons of William and Mary (Graham) Remington. William was born 4 Mar 1830, Mumford, NY, was educated at Rochester University, and became a Baptist minister. Mary died when Sumner was a small child.

Sumner spent most of his youth in Michigan and attended Kalamazoo College. He then taught school in Homan, MI, and from there entered the University of Michigan. He came to Belt, MT, in 1894, and took charge of the one-room school. A new high school was built in 1897 and in 1908 the school facilities were enlarged. Since 1897, Sumner was continually superintendent of schools for 23+ years.

In 1897, Sumner married Miss Annie Mackie, a native of Scranton, PA. Remington children: Sumner A., Jr; Genevieve E; Charles E.; Ellen; Daphne; Maxine.

    My notes:

According to the 1900 census, Sumner was born in Aug 1872. He and Annie are living at Belt, Cascade Co., MT; Sumner is a school teacher.

In 1910 they are still at Belt, MT; Sumner and Annie have three children and Sumner is still a teacher.

In 1920 the family is still at Belt: Sumner, Anna 40, Sumner A. Jr. 12, Geneveve 10, Charles 9, Helen 7, Daffney 4, Babe (daughter) 11 months. Sumner is a school principal.

In 1900 William is a roomer at Billings, Yellowstone Co., MT. He is still a minister.

    Notes:

Boyd Scott Remington's ancestry chart shows William born at Salem, MA. However, the 1850 census gives his birthplace as VT, which seems more likely, since his family lived there in the 1800 census.

In the 1850 Federal Census, William & Deborah are living at Wheatland, Monroe Co., NY, with their three children and William's mother, Betsey. They are near William's brother Silas and family.

    Notes:

On 28 Nov 1793, John Kittridge of Chesterfield, MA, was appointed guardian of Silas Remington, aged 17 years, of Suffield, CT. Silas is probably the Silas Remmington in the 1800 census at Rupert, VT, along with his brother Thomas. Both of these brothers had sons named Silas, born in VT.

Vermont Gazette, 10 February 1806; Bennington, Vermont: "Silas Remington of Reupert [sic.], is now confined to Bennington jail, on execution of a judgement in favor of Samuel Dinsmer of Rupert. He is to show cause why petitioner should not be allowed to take the oath prescribed by law for the relief of prisoners."

Federal Census of 1810 lists Silas Remington at Rupert, along with Thomas.

From "STATE OF VERMONT ROSTER OF SOLDIERS IN THE WAR OF 1812-14," prepared and published under the direction of Herbert T. Johnson, 1933, page 351: "Silas Remington, Surgeon's Mate, Rupert, Bennington Co., Vt. Served in Capt. Hopkins' Company, Col. Martindale's Regt. Detached Militia in U.S. service 2 months and 13 days, 1812. Served from June 15, 1814 to June 19, 1815 in Capt. Taylor's Company, 30th Inf. Pension Certificate of widow, Margaret, No. 39717."

Is Betsey the same wife as Margaret? See notes for Betsey.

Silas married Betsey Ross Geer Abt Dec 1793. Betsey (daughter of Elijah Geer and Elizabeth Margaret Ross) was born 7 Sep 1774, NY; died 1863, NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Betsey Ross Geer was born 7 Sep 1774, NY (daughter of Elijah Geer and Elizabeth Margaret Ross); died 1863, NY.

    Notes:

Her surname may have been Greer. Elsewhere her middle name is given as Rose. The name of her mother as Elizabeth Margaret Ross came from Tom Lavery's data at Rootsweb's Worldconnect.

See notes for Silas, in which pension mentions wife as Margaret.

Paul Remington's online genealogy says this couple had only two daughters.

Betsey is said to be of Chesterfield, CT, in "Landmarks of Monroe County, NY" by William F. Peck (1895), Part III, p. 80 - 81.
