Catherine married Calvin Hopkins Abt 1866. Calvin (son of Burrill Hopkins and Dianna Brown) was born 14 Oct 1845, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; died 1908; was buried , Small Maple Root Cemetery, Hill Farm Rd., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

1. Lenora Frances Hopkins was born Feb 1867, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; died Aft 15 Apr 1910.
2. Jennie Hopkins was born Abt 1869, RI.

Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1850, he appears to be the Thomas Whitman, age 46, living in West Greenwich, RI. His wife is in Warwick. Their eldest son Henry is living with Layton & Betsey Hopkins in West Greenwich, next to or with Thomas.

The surname is sometimes spelled Wightman, but is always pronounced Whitman.

Thomas married Catherine "Caty" Hopkins 13 Feb 1825. Catherine (daughter of Jonathan Hopkins and Diadama Unknown) was born 21 Sep 1805, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; died 10 Oct 1884; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Is she the Catherine Wightman, age 53, in the 1860 census living at West Greenwich with Layton Hopkins? Probably.

She is probably the daughter mentioned as Catherine Whitman in the will of Jonathan Hopkins of West Greenwich dated 18 Sep 1848. This will also mentions land sold to Layton Hopkins. Thus, I have made an assumption that Jonathan is her father.

In the 1850 Federal Census, she appears to be Catharine Whitman age 45, living in Warwick, RI, with some of her children and her married daughter and son-in-law. Her son Henry and husband Thomas are in West Greenwich.

In the Federal Census of 1880, she is probably the Catherine Aylesworth, age 74, living with her son George W. Whitman and family in West Greenwich, RI.

Jonathan married Diadama Unknown Abt 1802. Diadama was born Abt 1784; died 22 Apr 1839; was buried , Historical Cemetery 68, Austin-Hopkins Lot, New London Tpke., West Greenwich, RI. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

This marriage to Phebe Case is probably a second marriage for Samuel, since his son Rufus was born c 1773 (RI Cemetery Database). Samuel's will dated 8 June 1813 WG, proved 27 Sep 1813, mentions his wife Phebe; sons Rufus, Amon, Jonathan, James, & Daniel: daughters Ruth Whitman, Ase Mires, Martha Potter, Sarah Kinyon, & Tabitha Case.

I have very roughly estimated the birth years of Samuel's children mentioned in his will, specifically those by his first wife.
