He may be the Charles Remington, age 33, boarding at Franklinville, Cattaraugus Co., NY, in the 1920 census, a grinder at a knife factory.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Arthur is at Ashford, Cattaraugus, NY, with his wife and infant daughter, and his father Joseph, & Loraette wife of Joseph. It is possible that Loraette is his father's second wife. In the censuses of 1860 and 1870, Arthur is living with Bela & Silphina Remington and appears to be their son.

In the 1990 Federal Census, Arthur & Elvira are living at Yorkshire, Cattaraugus Co., NY. They have four children. According to the census data, they have had five children, four of whom are still living.

In 1910, Arthur E. & Elvira A. Remington, ages 53 & 50, are at Yorkshire, Cattaraugus Co., NY. They are still there in 1920 & 1930.

Arthur married Elvira A. Unknown Abt 1879, NY. Elvira was born Between 1851 and 1859, NY; died Aft 1 Jan 1920. [Group Sheet]

I am making an assumption that the Joseph and family in the 1860 and 1880 Federal Censuses at Ashford, NY is this individual and his family. Also in the same town are his brothers Copeland and Bela Remington and sister Patty Stevens. (There is the possibility that it may be another Joseph, since it is such a common name.)

In 1860 Joseph is 27, Laretta is 19, and their daughter Nellie is 4 months.

In 1880 they are living with married son Arthur and are identified as his parents; however, in the censuses of 1860 and 1870, Arthur is living with Bela & Silphina Remington and appears to be their son.

Joseph — Loraette Unknown. Loraette was born Abt 1841, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

In the 1860 census, her name is spelled Laretta.

I have made an assumption that this Joseph belongs in this family, based on a manuscript at New England Historic Genealogical Society which is referenced on Rootsweb's Worldconnect; this family tree also references Valerie George as a source. I have not yet studied this manuscript personally (Book of Ross by Ernest E. Fewkes), nor have I contacted Valerie George for confirmation. This family needs more research.

Joseph married Amanda Sackett 9 Mar 1817, Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT. Amanda (daughter of Aaron Sackett and Phoebe Hart) was born Abt 17 Aug 1795, Litchfield, Litchfield Co., CT; died 28 Jan 1871, Ashford, Cattaraugus Co., NY; was buried , Riceville Cemetery, Cattaraugus Co., NY. [Group Sheet]
