Harriet E. "Lydia" King

Notes:

In the 1850 census she is Harriet E., age 2; In the 1860 and 1870 censuses she is listed as Lydia (12 & 22); in 1880 she is Lizzie. It is possible her nickname was Liddie and the census taker in 1880 heard it incorrectly. Her mother's name was either Lydia, Lida A., Elitia, or Elidia; so perhaps Harriet's middle name was the same as her mother's.

Harriet married Wallace Waterman Bef 1 Jun 1870. Wallace (son of William Waterman and Rachel Remington) was born Abt 1851, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850, 1860, & 1870 Federal Censuses, Henry & his wife (Elitia or Lydia or Lida A.) and children are living at Ellisburg, Jefferson Co., NY. They are with his parents Henry & Betsey.

In 1850 the children are as follows: Ellen 16, Hannah 12, Laura 7, George H. 5, & Harriet E. 2, all b NY. Also in the household are Albert & Hannah Powers, ages 22 & 20.

In 1860 the children are: Laurie 16, George 15, Lydia 12, Mary 8, & Preston 2.

In 1870 the children are: George H. 25, Mary 18, & Preston P. 12. Also in the household is Hattie, 32 (who is she?).

Henry married Elitia "Lydia" Unknown Abt 1828, NY. Elitia was born Abt 1816, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880, NY. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 census she is Elitia A. (sp? -- or Elilta, Elitta, Eletia); in 1860 she is Lydia; in 1870 she is Lida A.; in 1880 she is Lida King, 64, an aunt (widowed) living with Henry N. & Hattie Johnson at Ellisburgh, NY.

A tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect shows him to be a son of Phineas King & Lowly Smith. (This needs more research to confirm.)

In the 1850, 1860, & 1870 Federal Censuses, Henry & Betsey are living at Ellisburg, Jefferson Co., NY. They are with their son Henry A. King and his family.

Henry married Elizabeth "Betsey" Allen 24 Dec 1809, NY. Elizabeth (daughter of Joseph Allen and Prudence Earle) was born 22 Dec 1788, RI or MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1870, NY. [Group Sheet]

According to a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, Betsey/Betty's maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Brightman who married Caleb Earle. If that is correct, the following information possibly pertains to this Elizabeth Brightman:
1742 BRIGHTMAN, Elizabeth, d. Thomas and Judah, Apr. 14, 1742, Dartmouth MA
And, her parents:
1741 BRIGHTMAN, Thomas Jr., of Dartmouth, s. of Thomas, and Judah Manchester of Dartmouth, d. of Stephen, marriage record 24 Dec 1741, Dartmouth, MA

These families are all related to our ancestors.

The censuses all state Betsey's place of birth as RI, so she may have been born in RI but her birth was recorded at Westport.

Her age in all the censuses agrees with the above date of birth.
