    Census listings: In 1850 he is "Alphonzo," but in 1870 he is "Alonzo." In 1880 he is Sherman, but in 1900 he is Alphonso S.

    In 1870 Alonzo S. & Ida are living with his parents.

    In 1880, Sherman Remmington is age 35, and his wife Alida is 30. They are living on East Eagle Street in Buffalo, Erie Co., NY. With them are two sons -- Arthur 8, and Alfred 6; also Sherman's sister Isador, 28. Sherman is a freight dispatcher. The census says Sherman's parents were born in MA/VT.

    In 1900 Alphonso S., Alida M., and Alfred M. are living on Highland Ave. in Fitchburg, Worcester Co., MA. The census says Alphonso's parents were born in NY/CA. According to the census data, Alphonso & Alida have been married 30 years, and have had three children, two of whom are still living.

    He may be the Alfonso H. Remington, 63 widower NY, in the 1910 census, living at Buffalo, Erie Co., NY, with the Haberer family. Alfonso is a bookkeeper for the railroad.

    Alphonzo married Alida "Ida" Mary McLean 1870, NY. Alida (daughter of John McLean and Caroline Safford) was born Oct 1849, NY; died 14 Aug 1909, Fitchburg, Worcester Co., MA; was buried 17 Aug 1909, Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Sherman & Lucinda are living at Lockport, Niagara Co., NY, with their young son "Alphonzo," and Adaline Miller age 41.

    Also living in the same town in 1850 is Sherman's sister Abby Flagler and her husband Sylvester, and their 10 children.

    In 1860, the family is at Lancaster, Erie Co., NY: Sherman 50, Lucinda 47, Sherman 14, & Alphonso 7. Was the census taker confused in separating Alphonso Sherman into two individuals, omitting Isador born c1853?

    In 1870, Sherman & (possibly second wife?) Esther are living at Lancaster, Erie Co., NY. Alonzo S. is 24, Ida is 21 (presumably his wife), and Isador is 17.

    In 1870, the census gives Sherman's birthplace as RI. The 1850 census says NY.

    Notes:

    I am not sure if Lucinda (in 1850) and Esther (in 1870) are one and the same. They both seem to have been born around the same year. Possibly the census taker mis-heard the name? Or, they may be two different wives.

    In 1880, Esther Remington is age 66, widowed, and living at Liverpool, Onondaga Co., NY. She is boarding with Isaac & Susan Gleason, along with another boarder named Lucy Azubah, 58.
