Warren William Remington

Notes:

In the 1870 and 1880 censuses his name is given as Warren.

In the Federal Census of 1900, William and Barbara Remington are living at Hackberry, Labette Co., KS. They have two children, and apparently from the census data, had another child who died. With them or next door are Williams's two brothers and their families, as well as his mother Prudence Remington.

In 1910, the family is still at Hackberry. William & Barbara have six children, including apparently a set of twins.

In 1920, William is widowed and still living at Hackberry. There are four children in the household.

Warren married Barbara Thornbrugh Abt 1892. Barbara was born 15 Feb 1873, Indian Territory; died 22 Mar 1919, Chetopa, Labette Co., KS; was buried , Lake Creek Cemetery, Bartlett, Labette Co., KS. [Group Sheet]

3. Vernon Remington was born Abt 1903, KS; died Aft 1 Jan 1920.

5. Perry Ray Remington was born Abt 1904, KS; died Aft 1 Jan 1920.
6. Bessie Remington was born Abt Dec 1909, KS; died Aft 1 Jan 1920.
7. Esther M. Remington was born Abt 1912, KS; died Aft 1 Jan 1920.

Notes:

In the 1870 Federal Census, his name is written as David or Daniel Remington (with a middle initial -- possibly H or G?). They are at Hackberry, Labette Co., KS. In 1870 they have two sons, Warren 4, and B. F. Butler 2. It is rather faint and difficult to read.

In the 1880 Federal Census, the family is still at Hackberry. The name is unclear -- Dennis? David? Daniel? They have three sons: Warren 14, Butler 12, and Blucher 12. Jane Cassford, "mother," age 70 Canada, is with them. It appears that Jane could be the mother of Prudence, because Jane was born in Canada, and the birthplace of Prudence's mother is given as Canada in the census data.

In both 1870 and 1880, Dennis's birthplace is given as VT. Prudence and all three boys were born in IL.

Prudence and Dennis may have been cousins.

Dennis H. Remington was listed as from Hampshire, IL, in the 8th Reg't Illinois during the Civil War.

The 1860 Federal Census has a Dennis Remington of the correct age living at Oberlin, Ohio, but he is married to Matilda and has two children, Ida 2 and Azael (?) 4. This Matilda appears to be a single mother living at a boarding house in 1870. There is also a Matilda Remington of the same age, a housewife, listed at a lunatic asylum in Ohio.

Dennis married Prudence Bell Abt 1865. Prudence (daughter of Henry Gale Bell and Charlotte DeWitt) was born Feb 1846, IL; died Nov 1900, Chetopa, Labette Co., KS. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Prudence Bell as the wife of Dennis Remington came from Sandy Zagarella in a posting at Rootsweb's Remington mailing list/message board. (quote from Sandy: "I have the marriage cert. for Dennis Remington and Prudence and her last name is Bell.")

In the Federal Census of 1900, Prudence Remington is age 54 and a widow, living at Hackberry, Labette Co., KS. Her three sons and their families are with her and/or next door.

Notes:

It appears in the 1830 census that Truman Remington is married and has three daughters under age five. The family is living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT.

In 1840 the family is still at Wallingford. He is listed near Amos Gorton, Rufus Remington, and Jonathan Remington. It appears that there are three sons and two daughters in the household.

Octavia Remington 22 VT and Prudence Remington 18 VT, living at Wallingford, VT, in the 1850 census, could possibly be Truman's daughters.

Truman married Jane Bell 1828, Rutland Co., VT. Jane (daughter of Ralph Randolph Wheelock Bell and Desire Reynolds) was born Abt 1810, NY or Canada; died Aft 1 Jun 1870. [Group Sheet]

"JAMES CASFORD JR. ; b. 1803 I.O.W. ; Baptized at Calbourne, I.O.W. , UK, on 13 March, 1803; died in Hall Township, Bureau County, Illinois., U.S.A. , between 1870 -1880. He came to Prince Edward Island, Canada with his parents, as a young boy , between 16 May, 1808 - 25 July, 1816 . . . married in P.E.I., in 1829, to MARGERY CARR. In the Federal Census of 1880, Jane Cassford, 70, is listed as "mother" in the household of Dennis (David/Daniel?) & Prudence Remington, at Hackberry, Labette Co., KS.

Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1860, Henry J. & "Sharlott" Bell are living at Hampshire, Kane Co., IL, with their seven children. Prudence is 18.

I have made an assumption that this is the family of Prudence Bell who married Dennis H. Remington. The age and state of birth agree.

Notes:

Jonathan served in the Revolution from MA & VT. He enlisted at Cummington, MA.

His marriage to Martha was obtained from Rootsweb's Worldconnect, so needs verification to determine that it is the same Jonathan Remington. That genealogy lists 11 children for this couple. Other family notes I have seen agree.

I could not find his birth record at Abington, but Lois Remington Smith lists Jonathan with the children of Joshua & Ruth.

However, some genealogies have this Jonathan as a son of Thomas Remington b 1726 and his wife Rachel Stowell.

Also, others show his birthplace as Cummington, Hampshire Co., MA, and his death as c 1840 at Wallingford, VT.

The Federal Census of 1830 at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT lists a Jonathan Rimmington and a Jonathan Rimmington Jr. The household of the former includes 1 male age 70<80, 1 female 50>60; and three other females -- 1-40<50, 1-10<15, & 1-15<20.

In 1833 when he appeared for his pension hearing, he said he had lived in Wallingford for 51 years (since 1782).

The last pension payment was made 12 Sep 1834 (to his wife?).

Jonathan married Martha Sprague Abt 1786. Martha (daughter of Joseph Sprague and Mary Thompson) was born Abt 1765, Danby, Rutland, VT; died Abt Sep 1834. [Group Sheet]
