Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Cyrus Walter Remington was born Oct 1879, NY (son of Lewis Noble Remington and Alice Arminy Remington); died 1939; was buried , Steamburg Cemetery, Cattaraugus Co., NY.

    Notes:

Cyrus's middle initial is W in census records. I found Walter as his middle name on a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect (Claire White's).

In the Federal Census of 1900, Cyrus & Clara are living at Red House, Cattaraugus Co., NY. They have two sons, Roland (Robert?) & Lewis, and are living next to Cyrus's parents and a cousin.

According to cemetery data at NYGenweb, this couple had a son Roland 1897 - 1913. Possibly he was a twin to Robert (?).

In 1920 the family is living at Salamanca, Cattaraugus Co., NY. The names of the 7 children are difficult to decipher.

In 1930 the family is at Red House again: Cyrus W. 50, Clara B. 50, Cyrus W. 20, Harry E.13, and Alice 79.

From findagrave.com: "Cyrus Remington . . . helped build the Aleghany State Park in NY. His name is on a plaque in the visitors' center."

Cyrus married Claribel "Clara" Bennett Abt 1896. Claribel was born 1879, NY; died 1955; was buried , Steamburg Cemetery, Cattaraugus Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

  1. 2.  Lewis Noble Remington was born Abt May 1850, NY (son of Hiram Remington and Alzada Ingersoll); died Aft 1 Jan 1920.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1900, Lewis & Alice are living at Red House, Cattaraugus Co., NY. With them is nephew Frank Remington, 14 NY. Next door is son Cyrus and his family.

In 1920 Lewis & Alice are still at Red House. With them is grandson Elwood Remington, 15.

Lewis married Alice Arminy Remington Abt 1869. Alice (daughter of William Remington and Caroline Elizabeth Stocker) was born Abt 1851, Liverpool, Onondaga Co., NY; died Aft 1 Apr 1930. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Alice Arminy Remington was born Abt 1851, Liverpool, Onondaga Co., NY (daughter of William Remington and Caroline Elizabeth Stocker); died Aft 1 Apr 1930.

    Notes:

Alice's middle initial is A is census records. I found "Arminy" on a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect.

In the Federal Census of 1880, an Alice and her brother Edgar are working at a hotel in Chicago, but it must be another Edgar/Alice.

    Children:
    1. 1. Cyrus Walter Remington was born Oct 1879, NY; died 1939; was buried , Steamburg Cemetery, Cattaraugus Co., NY.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Hiram Remington was born 30 Dec 1825, NY (son of Ransom Remington and Matilda Eddy); died 21 Feb 1899; was buried , Parklawn Cemetery, Wesley, Cattaraugus Co., NY.

    Notes:

I am not sure that Hiram is a son of Ransom, but since he is living next to Silas in the censuses, and gives parents' birthplace as VT, I am guessing he may belong here. (This needs more research to confirm.)

In the 1850 Federal Census, Hiram & Alzada Remington, ages 28 & 25, are living at Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY. They have a son, Lewis, 1 month old. They are living next to the family of Silas Remington.

In the Federal Census of 1870, Hiram & Alzada are ages 45 & 44, still at Dayton. With them are: Maty 19, Edgar 16, Alvira 14, Adaline 12, Herman 10, "Alverson" 8, Eva 6, and Glen 3. Nearby son Lewis N. is age 20 and married to Alice A., 19. They are near Orange Remington and family, and also near Garret and Wallace and their households.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Hiram & Alzada are both aged 54, still living at Dayton. In the household are: Alvira 24, Herman 21, Almeron 19, Eva 17, Harriet 15, & Glen 12 (all b NY). They are next to son Lewis and family.

  3. 6.  William Remington was born Abt 21 Aug 1821, NY (son of Stephen Remington and Thankful Hill); died 14 Apr 1891, Hersey, Osceola Co., MI.

    Notes:

I was not sure if William belonged in this family group, but Nancy Olejniczak provided information that confirmed it as fact, including date of death and name of father in the death record. Email message dated 20 Oct 2017 from Nancy Olejniczak: "In your tree there is a William Remington, suspected son of Stephen Remington. I just located a Michigan Death record for him on Family Search which gives his father's name as Stephen Remington."

One family tree has his name as William T. Remington, born 21 Aug 1821, Onondaga Co., NY.

The death record at Hersey, Osceola, MI says he died in NY, a widower age 71.

In the Federal Census of 1850, William & Caroline, ages 29 & 24, are living at Geddes, Onondaga Co., NY. They have three young children. In the same town are Stephen & Jane Remington.

In the Federal Census of 1860, William is at Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY. His wife is named Elizabeth -- not Caroline -- but she is still from PA and with approximately the same birth year as Caroline in the previous census. Perhaps she goes by both names. Or, she could be a second wife. Their ages are given as 37 & 37. They have six children.

In 1870 they are at Lysander, Onondaga Co., NY. William is 52 and Elizabeth is 48. There are two children in the household, Francis 17 and George M. 7.

William married Caroline Elizabeth Stocker Abt 1843, NY. Caroline (daughter of Benjamin Stocker) was born Abt 1826, PA; died 11 Apr 1888. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Caroline Elizabeth Stocker was born Abt 1826, PA (daughter of Benjamin Stocker); died 11 Apr 1888.

    Notes:

I am not sure if Caroline and Elizabeth are two individuals or one wife.

    Children:
    1. William Henry Remington was born 7 Jun 1844, NY; died 5 Dec 1919, Osceola Co., MI.

    7. George M. Remington was born Abt 1863, NY; died 7 Sep 1880.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Ransom Remington was born Between 1792 and 1795, VT (son of Stephen Remington and Thankful Hill); died 24 May 1884, Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1850, Ransom & Matilda Remington, ages 52 VT & 49 MA, are living at Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY. They have seven children in the household: Silas 18, Laura 15, Adaline 13, Emerson 11, Emery 8, Olive 8, & Alzada 5.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Ransom & Matilda Remington, ages 63 & 60, are still living at Dayton. Four children are in the household: Emmerson 21, Emma J. 18, Alzada 15, and Eri 12. (Eri is named in Ransom's will, but I believe he is a grandson, based on the obituary for Arvilla, wife of Charles -- unless there were two individuals named Eri born around the same year)

In the Federal Census of 1870, Ransom & Matilda Remington, ages 73 VT & 65 MA, are still living at Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY. They are next to Silas & Arvilla Remington and family.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Ransom Remington is age 86 VT (VT/VT), still living at Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY. He is living with son-in-law David Comstock and family.

Ransom's will, made in 1881, says he was 86 years old at that time. If true, he was born c 1795. (source: D. Rockwell, a descendant)

Nancy Olejniczak sent me a copy of a "Petition for Proof of Will, to the Surrogate of the County of Cattaraugus." This document refers to Ransom's will dated 3 Oct 1881. This will appointed as Executors Francis E. Haines and Emery Jane Comstock. The document lists all the heirs and next of kin of Ransom, along with their places of residence. Listed are: Lewis Remington, Hiram Remington, Arminal (?) Bunstow, Emerson Remington, Adaline Rockwell, Olive Robinson, Emory Jane Comstock, Silas Remington, Alzada Comstock, Eri Remington, Silas Remington, and Laura S. Chattuck. Also listed are numerous grandchildren. [My note -- these last three are grandchildren -- children of son Charles who died bef. 1855)

From findagrave.com (needs more research to be confirmed):
"There is no stone for Ransom. Cemetery records show that he owned a plot of eight graves but do not indicate who was buried there. The only stones in the area are for his wife Matilda and son Emerson. Lacking other proof, it is assumed that Ransom was buried here next to his wife. Ransom came to Dayton in the early 1830s from Marcellus, Onondaga Co., NY. His brother Orange arrived at about the same time and they might have traveled together."

Ransom married Matilda Eddy Abt 1818, VT. Matilda was born Abt 1800, MA; died 13 Dec 1873, NY; was buried , Markhams Cemetery, Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Matilda Eddy was born Abt 1800, MA; died 13 Dec 1873, NY; was buried , Markhams Cemetery, Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY.

    Notes:

Matilda's maiden name as Eddy was given to me by Nancy Olejniczak in an email dated 24 June 2011. The information was obtained from Olive's marriage record.

Matilda's memorial stone can be viewed at findagrave.com

    12. Lucy Alzada Remington was born Dec 1845, NY; died 16 Jan 1922, MI; was buried , Evart, Osceola Co., MI.

  3. 12.  Stephen Remington was born Bef 4 Jul 1772, Abington, Plymouth Co., MA (son of Joshua (2) Remington, II and Ruth Clay); died Abt 1830, Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY; was buried , Belle Isle Cemetery, Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY.

    Notes:

"Stephen, son of Joshua, baptized 4 July 1772" (Abington, MA VRs). The name of Joshua's wife is not mentioned in this record. From the notation in the records, it may have been customary to name only the father in the baptismal record.

Stephen's name is listed with this family on a chart drawn up by Lois Remington Smith of San Jose, CA. His name and birth date also appear on an online genealogy by Ann M. Mcallister.

I have made an assumption that this is the Stephen Remington who married Thankful Hill and that their children belong here on this family tree. This is based largely on birth places and locations of subsequent generations of assumed cousins.

Researcher Pat Boyden has come to the same conclusion; quote: "Speculation is that Stephen and his brother Joseph B. Remington went to Rutland, VT. He named a son Orange born 1801 and Joseph B. named a son Orange B. in 1810."

He is likely the Stephen Remington listed in the Federal Census of 1810 at Wallingford, Rutland, VT: 2 FWM<10, 2 FWM 10-15, 1 FWM 26-44, 4 FWF<10, 2 FWF 16-25, 1 FWF 25-44; total 12. Also, Joseph & Joshua Remington, likely his brothers, are listed in the same town.

This family needs more research to confirm that Thankful Hill belongs here, as well as this couple's descendants.

In summary, concerning Stephen Remington who married Thankful Hill: I am not sure of the identity of this Stephen's parents, but placing the marriage here with this particular Stephen (see baptismal note above) is one theory. Here is some additional info: Joshua & Ruth's son Uriah lived in Rutland Co., VT before moving to Delaware Co., NY; their son Joshua died in Chittenden Co., VT, but Joshua's children were born in Rutland Co., VT; son Joseph went to Warren Co., NY; son Jonathan married a girl from Rutland Co., VT, and had children there. These may be important clues relating to Stephen (who is said to have been born c 1770 in Rutland, VT). In other words, while the births of the children were recorded at Abington, MA, there is clearly a connection with Rutland, VT. Alternatively, Stephen (who married Thankful) could be a son of Thomas Remington & Rachel Stowell; two of their sons migrated to VT. However, I think their son Stephen was probably born in MA, too. But he also would be of the correct time frame. The name Ruth among the children of Stephen & Thankful may be a clue, although certainly not proof, that he belongs to Joshua & Ruth.

"Stephen Remington was born about 1770 in Rutland, VT and died about 1830 Town of Camillus, Onondaga County, NY on the place now owned by Henry Dow. Buried in Belle Isle Cemetary. Stephen married Thankful Hill about 1790, possibly born in Rutland, died in 1816 when youngest son was born." (source: John Anderson, posting at Remington message board, Rootsweb.com)

Stephen Remington is on the list of insolvent debtors at Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY, in 1818.

Stephen married Thankful Hill Abt 1790. Thankful was born Abt 1772; died Between 1815 and 1821. [Group Sheet]

  4. 13.  Thankful Hill was born Abt 1772; died Between 1815 and 1821.

    Notes:

I have made an assumption that Thankful Hill belongs here on this family tree, married to this particular Stephen. This is based on locations of subsequent generations of assumed cousins.

One genealogy says she died during the birth of the youngest son, William.

    Children:
    1. Reuben Remington was born Between 1790 and 1799, VT; died Aft 1 Jun 1860, NY.
