  1. 2.  Cornelius G. Remington was born Abt 1853, VT (son of Hosea Remington and Hulda Croft); died Aft 1 Apr 1930.

    Notes:

    In 1870 Daniel and Cornelius, ages 23 & 18, are carpenter's apprentices in Ballston, Saratoga Co., NY. They are living with the Reynolds family.

    According to the book The Craft Family, in 1890 Cornelius G. Remington was living at Ticonderoga, NY.

    In the Federal Census of 1900, C. & Eliza Remington are living at Elizabeth City, Chesapeake, VA. They have two daughters: Maud & Catharine. Cornelius is an architect.

    In 1910 Cornelius & Eliza are at Hampton, VA; daughter Catherine is with them.

    In the Federal Census of 1930, Cornelius Remington 78 VT is widowed, living with married daughter Maud Taylor and family on Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA.

    From Pamela A. Schenian: "The house that Cornelius G. Remington designed for himself is still standing and is at 173 Linden, Hampton, VA. The one he designed as a wedding gift for Maud in 1910 is at 331 S. Armistead, about a block from his house. He also designed a house next door to Maud's as a wedding gift for Catherine's to Jack Reagan, a journalist, but they moved out of the area just a few years later and eventually something happened to the house. It has been replaced with a brick ranch house. Maud's house is a simplified version of my house, which Remington designed in 1907."

    Cornelius married Elizabeth "Eliza" Unknown Abt 1879. Elizabeth was born Aug 1857, NY; died Aft 15 Apr 1910. [Group Sheet]

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Hosea & Huldah are living in Danby, Rutland, VT, with their two children Caroline & Daniel. Also there is Hosea's (assumed) father, Joshua Remington, Jr.

    In 1860 "Hosa & Hulda" Remington, ages 40 and 36, are living at Horicon, Warren Co., NY. With them are the following children: Caroline 17, Daniel 12, Cornelius 7, Flora 5, & Herbert 1. All were born in VT except Flora & Herbert were born in NY.

    In the 1870 Federal Census, Hosea 50 and Ruth 33 (Rimington) are living at Hague, Warren Co., NY. With them is Stella, age 8.

    In 1880, Hosea is age 60, living at Hague, Warren Co., NY. His wife is Mary, age 57, b NY (parents b NY/MA). Daughter Stella Remington is 18 and working in a hotel (parents b VT/VT). From this data I assume Mary is Hosea's third wife.

    In the 1900 Federal Census, Hosea is a widower, age 81, living at Chestertown, Warren Co., NY, with his married daughter Stella and family.

    According to Pat Boyden's Remington genealogy report, Hosea died 16 May 1911 at Horicon, Warren Co., NY.

    Pat's genealogy has his second wife as Ruth.

    Notes:

    Huldah's maiden name came to me from a Remington genealogy by Valorie Sherman. It is sometimes spelled Croff. (see Google books, The Craft Family)

    This genealogy has her dob as 17 Sep 1828. However, this means she would have been married at age 14 or 15, and does not agree with her age given in the census. In any case, it is possible.

    The Craft Family has her dob as 27 Sep 1823.

  1. 8.  Joshua Remington, IV was born Between 1790 and 1796, Danby, Rutland, VT (son of Joshua Remington, III and Eunice Unknown); died 1881, Bolton, Warren Co., NY.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Joshua Remington, Jr., appears to be age 54 and living in Danby, Rutland, VT. His wife is not there, so apparently she has passed away. In the household are son Hosea, and Hulda, assumed to be Hosea's wife, and their two young children.

    In the 1860 Federal Census, Joshua Remington is age 70 and living at Schroon, Essex Co., NY, with his son Justus and family.

    In 1870, Joshua is age 80 and living with son Ziba and family at Horicon, Warren Co., NY.

    One local history says he was born about 1790. It also states that he lived at Wallingford and Hinesburg, VT, and in later years at Huntington. (source: "New England Families" Vol. I, Genealogies and Memorials, p. 381)

    The name of Joshua's wife, as well as a list of some of his children, came from "New England Families" Vol. I, Genealogies and Memorials, p. 381. Also, her name, and birth/death dates for Polly & Joshua, are found in the book "Descendants of Roger Williams" Book III, Sayles Line, p. 203. This source says Joshua was born c1790 at Wall, VT.

    "History of Worcester Co., MA" p 98 says he married Diadama (source: Google Books). Rootsweb's Worldconnect has a family tree showing Joshua's second wife as Diademia Clark, date of marriage 1 June 1835.

    Joshua married Polly Sayles Abt 1812. Polly (daughter of Ezekiel Sayles, Jr. and Martha Ross) was born 5 Mar 1790, Wallingford, Rutland, VT; died 25 May 1834, Hinesburg, Chittenden, VT; was buried , Newell Stokes, Starksboro, Addison Co., VT. [Group Sheet]

    The book "Descendants of Roger Williams" Book III, Sayles Line, p. 203, says Polly died at Starksboro, VT.
