Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Olive Knapp was born Abt 1800 (daughter of David Knapp, Jr. and Anne Unknown).

    Notes:

I have made an assumption that Olive Knapp, married at Johnston, is a daughter of David Knapp. Note that I am not sure who her mother was; see notes for David.

I have roughly estimated Olive's age. Either of the following entries from the RI Cemetery Database could be for this Olive (see notes for James):
    LEE OLIVE 1799c - 20 MAY 1875 GL023 (Acotes Hill Cemetery, Rt. 44, Glocester)
LEE OLIVE 1804c - 17 MAY 1885 PV005 (Grace Church Cemetery, Elmwood & Broad, Prov)

Olive married James Lee 19 Sep 1824, Johnston, Providence Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

KNAPP Olive and James Lee, formerly of England, at Johnston. Gazette of Sept. 25, 1824.

KNAPP Olive and James Lee, formerly of England, by Rev. Mr. Sprague, at Johnston, Sept. 19, 1824.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  David Knapp, Jr. was born Abt 1747 (son of David Knapp and Patience Rhodes); died Between Jun and Sep 1830, Johnston, Providence Co., RI.

    Notes:

This Knapp family needs more research.

The will of David Knap of Johnston was dated 8 Jan 1826 and proved 18 Sep 1830. It mentions his wife Naomy; three sons: Zachariah, Joseph, & Moses; and one daughter, Lydia, who is single.

I am not sure how many times this David Knapp was married -- see all notes for David and his supposed wives. It may be that there were two David Knapp Jrs and that this family data should be divided between the two.

A David Knapp of Warwick, son of David, married Anne Griffin of Exeter, d/o Isaac, at West Greenwich 8 Dec 1768. Could this be the same David Knapp? I have made an assumption here that it is the same David (needs more research to confirm). Therefore, I am not absolutely certain that both of these marriages belong to the same David Knapp. Could Mariam have been his first wife and Anne the second? I have not positively resolved this. It could even have been a second marriage for his father, who may have also been a son of David.

See notes for David's son Remington Knapp. It is confirmed that his mother is Mariam. However, I don't know exactly when Remington was born.

There are two possible children for David & "Anne" Knapp: Moses B. b 2 Sep 1798, and Patience b c1787 (md. Laban Tefft Apr 1807 Johnston). If this is the same couple that were married in 1768, then Mariam must have been his first wife, or else the wife of another David Knapp. Or, Anne could have been a nickname for Mariam, also. As an alternative, David could have had a third wife also named Anne.

In the Federal Census of 1830, a David Knapp is listed at Johnston, RI. In the household are 3 males age 30 < 40, one male 80 < 90, one female 30 < 40, and one female 60 < 70. I have assumed the elderly gentleman age 80 - 90 is this David Knapp. The female is probably his wife "Naomy" mentioned in his will.

The Knapp property was located on Central Avenue in Johnston, west of what is now Route 5/Atwood Ave. Mariam's brother Caleb Remington and family members are buried at "the Knapp place."

Again, please be advised that I am not absolutely sure of these marriages for David, or of the exact birthdates of the children, or of which children belong to which wife. I have pieced David's likely family together as best I can, given the data I have, along with additional data from family trees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect to fill in some gaps.

A question which remains is, is Mariam referred to in some of the vital records as Anne? Moses is identified as son of David & Anne, not David & Mariam.

David married Anne Unknown Abt 1797. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Anne Unknown

    Notes:

Anne may be a nickname for Mariam (?).

    2. 1. Olive Knapp was born Abt 1800.

On 26 Apr 1738, Zachariah Rhodes deeded land in Pawtuxet to his son-in-law, David Knapp of Warwick, and his wife Patience (source: New England Historic Genealogical Register Vol 114 p 282).

David Knap of Gloucestor, cordwainer, bought a mansion house and lot in Warwick bordering other land David owned, 2 MAR 1746/47 Gloucestor, Providence County, RI (source: Warwick Land Records Vol 8 p 85; cited in family tree of Guy/Sam Wallis at Rootsweb's Worldconnect).

David Knap bought land in Warwick adjoining Zachariah Rhodes in 1735. He must have been at least 21 years of age at that time (source: Warwick Land Records Vol 5 p 303; cited in family tree of Guy/Sam Wallis at Rootsweb's Worldconnect).

David Knap is listed in the 1777 Warwick census as being over 60 years of age (source: Rhode Island Military Census 1777; cited in family tree of Sam Wallis at Rootsweb's Worldconnect).

A Nehemiah Knapp died at Pawtuxet at about age 78 in 1815 (b c1737). Could he have been a son of David & Patience?

Also, they may have had a daughter named Hester or Esther, who married at Warwick, 6 Sep 1761, to William France (Warwick Vital Records).

David married Patience Rhodes Abt 1730. Patience (daughter of Zachariah Rhodes) was born Abt 1707. [Group Sheet]

On 13 Apr 1741, Zachariah bought 97 acres with dwelling house in Smithfield, from Emanuel Rowse. After that he lived in Smithfield.

On 29 Dec 1741, Zachariah deeded 70 acres in Pawtuxet to John Rhodes of Warwick. The land was situated "easterly on land of my own and partly on land I gave to my son, Charles Rhodes."

On 25 May 1742, Zachariah deeded 97 acres of land in Smithfield to his daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Joseph Carpenter.

On 10 Jan 1761, Zachariah Rhodes of Smithfield and John Tucker of Warwick deeded 4 acres in Pawtuxet to Zachariah Tucker (son of John Tucker and grandson of Zachariah Rhodes).
