WEDNESDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 23, 1839, AGRlCULTURAL, From the Providence Journal:

    CATTLE SHOW
The annual Fair and Cattle Show of the Rhode Island Society for the Encouragement of Domestic Industry, was held at Pawtuxet, on Wednesday, the 9th inst. The attendance was very large, and the exhibition was, upon the whole, although deficient in some particulars, the most interesting held in a number of years . . .

For Agricultural Experiments and Vegetable Products, there was no legitimate competition. The show bill required a full and minute account of the manner of raising the crops, of preparing the soil, and the expense of cultivation . . . The pumpkins, squashes, beets, &,c. were of enormous dimensions.

The following is a list of the premiums awarded :

    Agricultural Evperiments, Vegetable Crops, Grain,

Samuel Slociim, Pawtuxet, for one cabbage

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Reuben Mathewson was born 1776; died 9 Jun 1842; was buried , Capt. Reuben Mathewson Lot, Hist. Cem. 33, Simmonsville Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

The will of Reuben Mathewson of Johnston, dated 21 May 1842 (codicil dated 3 June 1842), and proved 18 June 1842, mentions his wife Anne; sons Reuben Jr. and Henry Remington; and five grandsons and two granddaughters.

Reuben married Waity Remington 16 Apr 1800. Waity (daughter of Caleb Remington, Sr. and Roby Warner) was born Abt 1779; died 11 May 1814; was buried , Capt. Reuben Mathewson Lot, Hist. Cem. 33, Simmonsville Ave., Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 4

  1. 10.  Caleb Remington, Sr. was born 16 Sep 1747, Johnston, RI (son of Joshua Remington and Elizabeth King); died Between Feb and Sep 1836, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

Caleb was a Sergeant in the Revolution. According to a manuscript (Rev. War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots) at the Knight Library in Providence, Caleb served June 1775 - Aug 1780 in Capt. General's Cavaliers. It says he was buried on the Knapp place, next to the Hughes' residence, Hughesdale, Johnston, RI. (This manuscript is now at the RI Public Library, RI Collection)

He is listed on the Pension Roll of 1835: Remington, Caleb, sergeant, Providence County, all $120, rec $360, R. I. Militia, pl Oct. 24, 1833, com March 4, 1831, age 86

I have estimated the birth years for some of Caleb's children.

There is a court document at the RI Historical Society Library, Manuscript Room, concerning $30 owed to Caleb Remington of Johnston, cooper & yeoman, by Henry Warner of Providence. The document is dated 10 January 1797. Perhaps Henry was a relative of Caleb's wife.

Capt. Caleb Remington was an innkeeper at Johnston. He also ran a blacksmith and coopering business. In 1808 he advertised his property and business for sale, with the intention of closing his business.

He appears to be living in Gloucester, Providence Co., RI, in the 1810 census: 1 male 10-15 (Stephen). 2 males 16-25 (Henry & ?), 1 male 45+ (Caleb), 2 females 10-15 (Elizabeth & ?), 2 females 16-25 (Roby Ann & Mary), and 1 female 45+ (wife Roby). The census was taken in August, and daughter Amy was married in April; so there are two unknown individuals listed.

In the 1830 census, he is likely the male age 80-90 living with Caleb Remington, Jr.

Death notice in the Columbian Centinel of 6 Aug 1836: "Capt. Caleb Remington d. at Johnston, age 90, was in the Revolution."

Excerpt from "Club and Professional Life or Rhode Island" Vol. 1 pub. 1895 (at RI College library; copy at Roger Wms. Family Assoc.), article on Henry Adolphus Remington: "Capt. Caleb, of Johnston, Rhode Island, born 1748, served in the expedition to Rhode Island in 1778, under Capt. Benjamin Stack, and no braver heart ever fluttered in man than that which pulsated in the heart of this well-known revolutionary hero. Caleb Remington, of Johnston, was admitted as a master Mason of Manchester Lodge, Anthony, Rhode Island, Nov. 17th, 1809. The Remingtons were early settlers of Providence, Johnston and Cranston. One of the oldest houses now standing in the town of Johnston is the Remington farm house, which passed from Caleb, son of Capt. Caleb, father of Judge Remington, the pioneer Judge of the town, and is now in the possession of the only surviving member of the family, Miss Joanna Remington."

Caleb married Roby Warner Abt 1776. Roby (daughter of William Warner and Susannah Briggs) was born 1755; died 14 Nov 1815, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 11.  Roby Warner was born 1755 (daughter of William Warner and Susannah Briggs); died 14 Nov 1815, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:
