In 1910 they are at Coventry, RI: Herbert A. 48 Real Estate Agent, 2nd marriage; H. Agnes 47 1st marriage; Edith A. 20.

In 1920 the family group is as follows at Coventry, Spring Lake Rd., Washington: Arthur F. Oney 28, Edith A. 29, Walter F. 8; Herbert A. Hopkins 57 father-in-law, manager, hardward (store?), Hanna A. 56 mother-in-law, grammar school teacher.

In 1930 they are on South Main St., Coventry: Arthur F. Olney 39 RI, Edith A. 40 RI, Walter F. 18 RI; Hanna A. Hopkins 67, and Herbert A. Hopkins 68 RI, proprietor of store.

Herbert married Martha Giddings 15 Feb 1882, Cranston, Providence Co., RI. Martha (daughter of Thomas Giddings and Rebecca Unknown) was born Between 1860 and 1861, Prince Edward Island, Canada; died 21 Mar 1887, Cranston, Providence Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

2. Herbert Augustus Hopkins, Jr. was born 18 Jan 1887, Arlington, Cranston, Providence Co., RI; died 1966; was buried , Brayton Cemetery, Apponaug, Warwick, RI.

Herbert married Hannah Agnes Hall Abt 1 May 1888, Cranston, Providence Co., RI. Hannah (daughter of Emery A. Hall and Sarah A. Tarbox) was born Sep 1862; died 19 Feb 1935, Coventry, Kent Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

In the Federal Census of 1870, the family is at Providence, RI, as follows: Oliver W. Hopkins 43 RI Coal Dealer, Mary 39, John H. 19, William J. 17, Herbert A. 8, and Jane 82; all b RI.

In the Federal Census of 1880, the family is at Cranston, RI, as follows: Oliver Hopkins 53 RI clerk, Mary 49, John H. 29, Herbert A. 18 works in jewelry shop, William J. 27, Mary J. (prob mn Bell) 27 Canada, Walter B. 5, Frederick G. 4, William W. 3, and Mabel C. 8 mos; all b RI except William's wife Mary.

Oliver married Mary Caswell 29 Nov 1849, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI. Mary (daughter of Philip Caswell and Elizabeth Betsey Rose) was born 22 May 1831, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 20 Jun 1904, Providence, Providence Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

In the Federal Census of 1850, the family is at Jamestown, RI, as follows: Oliver Hopkins 84 RI, Jane 62 RI, Oliver W. 23 RI, Mary 19 RI (mn Caswell, w/o Oliver), Susan M. 30 RI -- possibly sis of Oliver; and Albert Caswell 12 RI -- possibly brother of Mary.

There is quite an age difference between Oliver and his wife Jane; I wonder if it was a second marriage? I have made an assumption that the marriage of Oliver Hopkins of Jamestown to Mary Brown is a first marriage for this Oliver who married Jane Battey.

The will of Oliver Hopkins, "yeoman of Jamestown, advanced in age" is dated 23 Feb 1836, proved 20 Mar 1851. It mentions wife Jane; sons George L. of Oteger, NY; William H.; and Oliver W. under 21; dtrs Ruth Watson of Louiano, NY; and Susan.

Oliver married Jane Battey Abt 1825. Jane (daughter of William Battey, III and Rebecca Tayer) was born Between 1787 and 1788, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 23 Aug 1870, Providence, Providence Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

The death record of one of her children gives Jane's middle initial as G.

Jane was Oliver's second wife.

The death record identifies his parents as Philip & Mary. She could have been Mary Chappell, d/o Richard & Sarah (Jacques) Chappell who were md 29 Nov 1761 SK.

Philip married Elizabeth Betsey Rose Abt 1825. Elizabeth was born 16 Apr 1809; died 18 Feb 1898, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; was buried , Island Cemetery, Newport, RI. [Group Sheet]

The death record says her parents were Philip & Elizabeth Rose, but I think they may have been Philip & Mary because there was a couple of that name having children in SK during that time period. It could be that the informant at the time of her death did not know the correct names of her parents.

The will of Jonathan Hopkins of SK, being aged, was written 3 Jan 1801, proved 10 Mar 1801. It names his father John Hopkins dec'd; wife Mary; sons Job, Oliver, Fones, & John; dtrs Roby Stanton, Ruth Hopkins, Susannah Brown, & Eunice Greene; also 2 grandsons named Jonathan Hopkins, sons of Job and Fones.

Jonathan married Mary Whitford 27 Apr 1760, East Greenwich, Kent Co., RI. Mary (daughter of Robert Whitford and Margaret Fones) was born Abt 1738; died Abt Sep 1806, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

Mary Hopkins, wife of Jonathan, is mentioned in the will of her father Robert Whitford.

I think this marriage record pertains to this William, but this needs more research to confirm:
BATTEY William, and Rebecca Sayer; m. by Rev. Gardiner Thurston, March 17, 1778.

I believe it is accurate because several of the names of William & Rebecca's children reflect the parentage of William Battey III: Phebe (Remington) his mother, Jane (his mother), Stephen (Remington) his maternal great-grandfather.

I don't yet have an accurate birth year for William; I have given it a rough estimate based on the year of his parents' marriage.

William married Rebecca Tayer 17 Mar 1778, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI. Rebecca was born Abt 1753. [Group Sheet]

Rebecca's maiden name is given several different spellings in the index (Sayer, Tazer); It would be better to view the original at Jamestown. I have roughly estimated her birth year.

I think she may be a descendant of Benjamin Tayer of Newport, particularly since she has a son named Benjamin.
