Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Phebe Cooke was born 1677 (daughter of John Cooke and Mary Havens).

Phebe — Mr. Allen. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  John Cooke was born Abt 1650 (son of Thomas Cooke, III and Thomasin Unknown).

    Notes:

It is not known for sure that John's wife was Mary Havens. However, the will of William Havens mentions a daughter Mary Cook; and John is known to have had a wife Mary who was mother of his daughter Phebe (Allen) b 1677. (see The New England Histocial and Genealogical Society Vol 128 p 152 by Jane Fletcher Fiske).

John — Mary Havens. Mary (daughter of William Havens and Dennis Denise Unknown) was born Abt 1652. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Mary Havens was born Abt 1652 (daughter of William Havens and Dennis Denise Unknown).

    Notes:

Mary Havens could not have been the widow of Thomas Cook, Sr., according to Jane Fletcher Fiske in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register Vol 128 p 152. In her father's will of March 1680, she is named as Mary Cook, so it has been suggested that she was married to John Cook(e).

    Children:
    1. 1. Phebe Cooke was born 1677.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Thomas Cooke, III was born Abt 1626, Dorset, England (son of Thomas "Butcher" COOKE, Jr. and Mary Unknown); died Between 1669 and 1670, Portsmouth, RI.

    Notes:

One source says that Thomas was b. 1626-28, married in 1653, and had four sons -- Thomas, Stephen, Ebenezer, & Benjamin, and one daughter -- Hannah. It also says that the oldest son, Thomas, was b.1654 and went to Shrewsbury, NJ, settling near land there which had been purchased by his uncle, John Cooke, and his aunt's Borden brothers, and other Rhode Islanders. This Thomas Cooke III was a member of the House of Deputies of East New Jersey in 1693. He died at sea on a voyage to England, leaving a wife and three children, including a son William who later held various government positions in New Jersey.

Thomas — Thomasin Unknown. Thomasin was born Abt 1627. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Thomasin Unknown was born Abt 1627.
    Children:
    1. Sarah Cooke was born Abt 1647; died Abt 1680, Shrewsbury, NJ.
    2. 2. John Cooke was born Abt 1650.
    3. Phebe Cooke was born Abt 1664; died Aft 1697.

  3. 6.  William Havens was born Abt 1600; died Abt 1683.

    Notes:

The will of William Havens of Portsmouth is dated 13 March 1680, proved 25 Sep 1683. It mentions wife Dennis; 5 sons: John, Thomas, Robert, George, & William: and 8 dtrs: Sarah Tiler, Mary Cook, Ruth Cards, Dinah, Elizabeth, Martha, Rebecca, & Margaret Havens.

I have roughly estimated his date of marriage and the birth years of his children.

William married Dennis Denise Unknown Abt 1645. Dennis was born Abt 1624. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Dennis Denise Unknown was born Abt 1624.

    Notes:

The book "Samson Battey and His Descendants" gives her name as Dionis. Her husband's will has Dennis.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Thomas "Butcher" COOKE, Jr. was born Apr 1600, Netherbury, Dorset, England; was christened 13 Apr 1600, St. Mary's, Netherbury, Dorset, England (son of Thomas "Butcher" COOKE and Joanna Unknown); died Abt May 1677, Portsmouth, RI.

    Notes:

Thomas Cooke, his wife, and 3 children came to America in 1637, sailing from Weymouth, Dorset, England on the ship Speedwell. They first settled in Taunton, MA (at least by 1639), where in 1643 Thomas took the freeman's oath of fidelity.

Records seem to indicate that Thomas had two wives, both named Mary. The first Mary was the mother of his children, and signed deeds with a mark, not a signature. By contrast, the second Mary signed deeds with a neat signature, so was likely more educated. It is quite possible that she was Mary Shearman, daughter of Secretary of the Colony of Rhode Island, Philip Shearman (our ancestor). Also, the second Mary was probably much younger than Thomas, since she outlived him and remarried, having many more years in that marriage.

I have gone along with this assumption and entered her name as Mary Shearman (see "Thomas Cooke of RI" Vol. I, p. 13, by Jane Fletcher Fiske).

Another source says Thomas was born in 1603 at Karl's Colne, County of Essex, England, and that he came to America in 1635. This other source says his son George was b.1633, and that Thomas also had a daughter Sarah b. 1632.

Thomas married Mary Unknown Abt 1625, England. Mary was born Abt 1605; died Abt 1670. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Mary Unknown was born Abt 1605; died Abt 1670.

    Notes:

Jeremiah had two wives, both named Mary. It is believed that his first wife was the mother of his children.

    Children:
    1. 4. Thomas Cooke, III was born Abt 1626, Dorset, England; died Between 1669 and 1670, Portsmouth, RI.
    2. John "Butcher" COOKE was born 30 Mar 1630, Dorset, England; died 16 May 1691, Portsmouth, RI.
    3. George Cooke was born Abt 1647, Portsmouth, RI.
