In 1900, the family is in Indian Village, Tama Co., IA: J. M. Remington 42 IL (NY/NY), Ella 34 IL, and Maria 9 SD.

In the 1905 Iowa State Census, J. M. Remington is age 46 b. IL, parents b. NY; he is married, and a harness maker. They are living in Montour, Tama Co., IA.

Joseph married Ella M. Smith Abt 1883. Ella (daughter of Alexander Smith and Rachael Garlir) was born Oct 1865, IL; died 29 Aug 1925, Morrison, Whiteside Co., IL; was buried , Yorktown, Bureau Co., IL. [Group Sheet]

1. Maria Remington was born 6 Sep 1890, Brown, SD; died Aft 1905.

Notes:

In 1850 the family is living in Sennett, Cayuga Co., NY: Joseph M. Remington 28, Mary 27, Amelia 6, and Edward 4, all b NY. Also in the home is James Barber, 22 Ireland.

In the Illinois State Census of 1865, Joseph M. Remington is listed as head of household in Fairfield, Bureau Co., IL.

In 1870, the family is at Fairfield, Bureau Co., IL; the two younger children, Maria and Joseph, are in the home.

In 1880, the family is still at Fairfield: Joseph 58 NY, Mariah (mother) 82 NY, Mary E. (wife) 56 NY, and Joseph (son) 21 IL.

Joseph married Mary Edmunds Abt 1843. Mary (daughter of Joseph Edmunds and Susanna Chapman) was born Abt 1823, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

I am guessing she is daughter of Joseph and Susanna Edmunds -- pieced together from census records and burial information.

I am making an assumption that Mary is sister of Sylvia Edmunds who married Philander Remington. I conjecture they may be daughters of Joseph and Susanna Edmunds. I am going to make an educated guess that they are in this family group, based on census data from 1840 showing a free white female age 15-19 and and other age 20-29. The youngest girl age 10-14 would be Martha, with them in 1850.

This family lived in Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY. In the 1830 census, it appears that Mills and Maria have 5 children -- 3 daughters and 2 sons.

Mills married Maria Warner 20 Feb 1817. Maria was born 1798, Saratoga, NY; died 7 Nov 1883; was buried , Sennett Rural Cemetery, Cayuga Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

In 1860 she is Maria Remington 61, living in Brutus, Cayuga, NY, with William H. Tanner 48 and wife Sarah 42.

She is still with them in 1865 and 1870; her birthplace is given as Saratoga.

In the 1880 census she is Mariah Remington, mother, age 82, living in Fairfield, IL, with Joseph and family.

This family is from MA, but appears in the 1820 census in Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY.

In 1840, the household of J. Edmunds at Brutus is as follows: free white males 2 age 10-14, 1 age 15-19, 1 age 20-29, and 1 age 60-69; free white females 1 age 10-14, 1 age 15-19, 1 age 20-29, and 1 age 50-59.

Two of the youngest children would be William and Martha; the two other young females must be Mary and Sylvia; and of course the adults are the parents.

I don't know who the other three boys are -- they could be unknown children, grandchildren, hired help, or foster children.

In 1850, the household is as follows: Joseph Edmunds 70 MA, Susanna 67 MA, William 22 NY, Martha 20 NY; also Erastus Griswold 19, and Martha Cresson (?) 14.

In the Boston Transcript for 19 Mar 1928 (available in the Dallas, TX, Public Library on microcard, "Boston Transcript, 1906-1941" the following is reported: EDMUNDS, CHAPMAN, STAFFORD. Joseph Edmunds, Quaker, Cheshire Mass., born March 22, 1780, died Feb. 6, 1859, married Susie or Susanna Chapman, Presbyterian, born Nov. 19, 1782, died April 11, 1867; she may have been born in Great Barrington, Mass. Joseph was son of Edward Edmunds and Isabel Stafford, Records say that Isabel's father was officer in the Revolution.

Joseph married Susanna Chapman 25 Mar 1802, Great Barrington, MA. Susanna (daughter of Ezra Chapman and Esther Avery) was born Abt Nov 1783; died 11 Apr 1867, Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY; was buried , Joseph Remington Farm, Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

In 1860, Susanna Edmunds is age 77, living with Philander and Sylvia Remington. I am assuming Sylvia is her daughter.

Please note that I am not positive that Jabez belongs in this family, but time and location in both marriage and census records strongly suggest it. It doesn't seem that he would have been a son of any of Daniel's brothers, although I suppose he could be a son of Samuel if Jabez was born c1755, or son of Stephen. I have searched for confirming data but none seems to be available. I wonder why he did not name a son Daniel, or Stephen or Samuel for that matter. He did name a son Ebenezer, the name of one of Daniel's sons and possibly his closest brother, However, he also named a son Rufus, the name of one of Samuel's sons. So this is inconclusive.

Compiler Katie Mills thinks that Jabez likely served in the Revolution, although no records have confirmed that.

Peter Comstock of Norfolk, CT, sold 100 acres in Norfolk to Jabez Remington, 2 Sep 1775. (source: "A Comstock Genealogy, Descendants of William Comstock of New London, CT" p. 53)

Jabez Remington, of Norfolk, affidavit: " . . . am of the Anne baptis perswasion and do indeavor at all times to attend that worship beleaving in my concience that it is true worship of God." -- witnessed by Elder Joseph Hastings, 12 June 1776 (Norfolk Vital Records 1728-1850).

Jabez married Penelope Mills 27 Apr 1773, Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT. Penelope (daughter of Joseph Mills, Jr. and Susanna Case) was born 28 May 1755, West Simsbury, Harttford Co., CT; died Mar 1814, Cayuga Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Penelope's parents moved to Norfolk, CT, in 1759. Her stepmother Hannah Remington was reportedly from Suffield. (source: History of the Simon Mills Family, by Katie Mills, p. 59)

In the 1810 census Penelope appears to be a widow, listed as head of household in Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY. She is listed next to son-in-law Samuel Olds and near son Martin Remington. Also in the same town is David Remington, probably the nephew of Jabez. Penelope's household is as follows: 1 FWM 10-15, 1 FWM 16-25, 1 FWM 26-44, 1 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 16-25, and 1 FWF 45+.

Penelope died of consumption at age 59. "She was a professor of religion in the Baptist denomination."
