    Notes:

Florence's birth record is not in the Coventry town records. The birth record for sister Olive is also omitted. The record for Bertha was not added until 1943. However, I have made an assumption that these three sisters were born in Coventry, as were their older siblings.

Florence's death record at Coventry identifies her parents as William & Lenora.

In the Federal Census of 1910, Florence is age 13, living with her mother and two sisters in Coventry. It just so happens that they are living next door to Oscar & Anna Andrews, Aunt Velna's parents.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Hyacinthe Marcotte was born Oct 1866, Canada (son of Esdrase St. Marcotte and Aurelie Unknown); died Aft 1 Apr 1930.

    Notes:

According to data on the 1900 Federal Census, Hyacinthe came to America in 1885.

In the Federal Census of 1900, Hyacinth & Alphonsine Marcotte are living at Warwick, RI. They have four sons: William, Narcis, Walter, & Joseph.

In the Federal Census of 1920, "Harrison" & "Rosie" Marcotte are living at Coventry, RI. In the household are six of their children, ages 9 - 24.

In the Federal Census of 1930, "Harrison" & "Alphonte" Marcotte, ages 63 & 61, are still living at Coventry, RI, on Mill Street. With them are Walter, George, & Gladys.

Other Marcotte marriages in Coventry are for Adelaide Marcotte (b c1864), Moneline Marcotte (b c1866), and Hermine Marcotte (b c1868). I don't know whether they are related to Hyacinthe; but I do know that Moneline & Hermine are sisters, both married the same day in Warwick, 12 Sep 1887, by Rev. C. P. Gaboury.

Hyacinthe married Alphonsine "Rosie" Plante 9 Oct 1886, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Alphonsine (daughter of Felix Plante and Marianne Unknown) was born Apr 1868, Canada; died Aft 1 Apr 1930. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Alphonsine "Rosie" Plante was born Apr 1868, Canada (daughter of Felix Plante and Marianne Unknown); died Aft 1 Apr 1930.

    Notes:

According to data on the 1900 Federal Census, Alphonsine came to America in 1871. It also says she has had 7 children, 4 of whom are still living in 1900.

The marriage record at Coventry has her maiden name as Alfonsine Plante.

It appears that she is Annie Plante, age 12, in the 1880 census, living at Coventry, RI, with her parents Felix & "Merian" Plante and family. All of the siblings were born in Canada except the two youngest. Annie is working in a cotton mill, as are all of her siblings except the two youngest. Her father works on a farm.

    Notes:

According to the marriage record at Coventry Town Hall, Hyacinthe & Alfonsine were married in Warwick. At that time, Hyacinthe's residence was Warwick, and Alfonsine was a resident of Coventry. He was 20, she was 18; both were born in Canada. It was the first marriage for both.

They were married by Rev. Henry F. Contrary of St. John's Church.

    Children:

    4. Joseph Marcotte was born 3 Aug 1895, RI; died Dec 1969.
    5. Eva Marcotte was born Abt 1902, RI.
    6. Gladys Marcotte was born Abt 1904, RI.
    7. George Marcotte was born 27 Jan 1908, RI; died Jan 1986.
    8. Doris Marcotte was born Abt 1909, RI.
    9. Blanche Marcotte was born Abt 1911, RI.

  3. 10.  William Ellery Sprague was born 7 Aug 1861, New Shoreham, Newport Co., RI (son of Eldridge N. Sprague and Josephine Simmons); died 7 Nov 1940, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Plainland Cemetery, Harkney Hill Rd., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1870, William E. Sprague is age 8.

In the Federal Census of 1900, William & Lenora Sprague, ages 39 & 33, are living at Coventry, RI. There are four children in the household: Bertha L., Oliver, Florence, & Everet F. According to census data, William & Lenora have been married 15 years, and Lenora has had 8 children, three of whom are still living. I believe Everett is William's son by a prior marriage.

In the Federal Census of 1910, William is age 50 and divorced, living at Warwick with married son Everett and his wife.

According to the 1900 Federal Census, William was born in August 1861. This also agrees with the 1870 census, in which he is 8 years old.

His middle name is given as Ellery in both of his marriage records at Coventry.

William married Lenora Frances Hopkins 21 Nov 1885, Coventry, Kent Co., RI. Lenora (daughter of Calvin Hopkins and Catherine M. Whitman) was born Feb 1867, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; died Aft 15 Apr 1910. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Lenora Frances Hopkins was born Feb 1867, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI (daughter of Calvin Hopkins and Catherine M. Whitman); died Aft 15 Apr 1910.

    Notes:

Lenora's marriage record at Coventry identifies her parents as Calvin & Catherin M. Hopkins. This agrees with the census data, because she is living with them at West Greenwich in the 1870 Federal Census.

In the Federal Census of 1910, Lenora Sprague is age 43 and divorced, living at Coventry, RI. With her are her three daughters: Bertha 20, Olive L. 16, & Florence J. 13. Also there are two boarders, John & Harold Rollinson.

    Children:
    1. Olive Luella Sprague was born 26 Sep 1886, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; died 27 Sep 1886, Coventry, Kent Co., RI.

    3. Bertha Lee Sprague was born 14 Oct 1889, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; died 1984.
    4. Olive L. Sprague was born May 1893, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; died 1975; was buried , Plainland Cemetery, Harkney Hill Rd., Coventry, RI.
    5. 5. Florence G. Sprague was born 14 Jul 1896, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; died 5 May 1983, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Woodland Cemetery, Washington & Knotty Oak Sts., Coventry, RI.

  5. 12.  John Allen REMINGTONJohn Allen REMINGTON was born 1 Dec 1866, Warwick, Kent Co., RI (son of Benjamin Franklin REMINGTON and Adeline Tripp MANCHESTER); died 1 May 1895, Cranston, Providence Co., RI; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Phenix, RI.

    Notes:

I have a copy of his birth certificate from Warwick, RI (Warwick Births, 1850 - 1882, Vol. 2, p. 5); a copy of his official marriage record from the RI State Offices in Providence, as well as the original page from the Town of Coventry marriage record book, p. 89; and his death certificate from Cranston, RI.

The 1880 census lists John A. Remington as age 12 at that time. I have a copy of the page from the census showing his family.

We have a nice portrait of John Allen dressed in his best suit, with a boutonnierre pinned to his right lapel. Perhaps it was a graduation picture, or even a wedding picture, as he was married quite young the first time -- not yet nineteen. His brown hair is neatly parted in the center and combed with a slight wave to either side. He has light eyes, like his father's, and fine regular features in an oval face. I definitely see a bit of his looks in our family, especially my uncles and my dad's cousins. We never knew much about my Great-grandfather Remington; things were left unsaid. His first wife died young of consumption, after only 1 1/2 years of marriage, which must have brought him much grief. Perhaps he took up drinking to cope with the sorrow, and then couldn't get away from it, even after marrying Angeretta, with whom he had two fine sons. For some reason they separated. He died so young, only 28 years old, of some form of cancer, according to the death certificate. I guess the whole story will never be known, so we've left it in God's hands.

John married Angeretta Williams WHITFORD 10 Nov 1891, Coventry, Kent Co., RI. Angeretta (daughter of Charles Carmi WHITFORD and Harty Potter JOHNSON) was born 10 Nov 1870, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; died 12 Oct 1958, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Woodland Cemetery, Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

  6. 13.  Angeretta Williams WHITFORDAngeretta Williams WHITFORD was born 10 Nov 1870, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI (daughter of Charles Carmi WHITFORD and Harty Potter JOHNSON); died 12 Oct 1958, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Woodland Cemetery, Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

I have a photocopy of her original birth record in the official Book of Births for 1870 in the Town of West Greenwich, p. 20; a copy of the original marriage record from the official Book of Marriages for 1891 in the Town of Coventry, p. 89; a copy of the marriage certificate from the State Offices at Providence, RI; a copy of her death certificate from the State of Rhode Island; and a copy of the newspaper obituary. Her gravestone has been photographed.

    Angeretta was a midwife.

I remember occasionally going to visit my Great-grandma Remington in a house on Knotty Oak Road in Coventry, RI, where she lived with "Aunt Ollie and Uncle Allen," who were actually my great aunt -- Angeretta's sister -- and her husband, Allen Hopkins. The older folks would sit around the living room and talk, while we children would sometimes sit and listen, and sometimes amuse ourselves by walking around -- but never upstairs, as I recall. There was a square metal grate in the floor between the living room and kitchen, through which the heat would blow from the basement furnace. Being a small child, I had to take a rather large step to walk, or rather jump, over this grate, and I was somehow worried that I might fall through!

Great-grandma Remington came to stay overnight with us once, and she slept in the room next to mine. When she was in the hospital with her final illness, I was allowed to go up to her hospital room to see her one last time. I was seven years old.

Aunt Ollie lived quite a few years longer, and died when I was sixteen. I have memories of going to her funeral. But the best memories are of the three generations of family sitting around that comfortable living room, where the older folks would talk in their gentle and pleasant voices.

    Children:

  8. 15.  Mary Elizabeth McNeil was born Abt 1875, CT (daughter of John McNeil and Josephine Unknown); died 1966; was buried , Greenville Cemetery, Smith Ave., Smithfield, RI.

    Notes:

Family information from my cousin Marilyn tells me that Mary was not married, and the Thurston connection was conjecture from her mother.

    Children:
    1. 7. Edith Mae Wright was born 9 Oct 1893, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; died 21 Apr 1951, Providence, Providence Co., RI; was buried , Woodland Cemetery, Coventry, RI.
