Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Rhoda Manchester was born Abt 1761, Little Compton, RI (daughter of Jeremiah Manchester and Lydia Gifford).

    Notes:

Rhoda Manchester is mentioned as his granddaughter, daughter of the his deceased Lydia (Gifford) Manchester in the 19 Dec 1788 will of John Gifford, Lydia's father.

Research is ongoing to determine which John Manchester married Rhoda. At present, I suspect she may have been the second wife for John Manchester who married Sarah Bailey, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Rhoda married John Manchester 27 Feb 1787, Little Compton, RI. John was born Between 1747 and 1767. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. Asa Manchester was born 24 Dec 1787, Little Compton, Newport Co., RI.
    2. Lydia Manchester was born 3 Mar 1791, Little Compton, Newport Co., RI.
    3. John Manchester was born 4 May 1794, Little Compton, Newport Co., RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1850.
    4. Shadrach Manchester was born 16 Aug 1796, Little Compton, Newport Co., RI.
    5. Phebe Manchester was born 8 Jun 1799, Little Compton, Newport Co., RI.
    6. Sarah Manchester was born 11 Aug 1801, Little Compton, Newport Co., RI.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Jeremiah Manchester was born Abt 1736.

    Notes:

We are not sure of this Jeremiah's dates and parentage. He was probably born before or about 1738, and married about 1760. I suspect he may be a son of Edward Manchester and Anna Williston. They have a grandson named Jeremiah, son of Zebedee, Archer's son.

If so, he would be a brother of Archer, who married Elizabeth Gifford, in which case the two brothers married two sisters.

Tiverton Deed Book: Jeremiah Manchester sells land bounded by Isaac Manchester to Philip Gray, 8 Aug 1766 (or 1761?), 34th yr of King George II.

He is probably the Jeremiah Manchester of Tiverton who is listed in 1776 as a Sergeant under Capt. Christopher Manchester.

He may be the Jeremiah Manchester who witnessed the will of Hope Durfee on 24 Oct 1809.

A Jeremiah Manchester is in the 1820 census at Tiverton, over age 45. He is engaged in manufacturing. Also in the household is a white female over age 45 and one white male age 11 - 16.

A Jeremiah Manchester of Tiverton was married to Phebe Taber/Tabor and wrote his will when "advanced in age" on 23 Dec 1822. It is possible that it is the same individual as the one who married Lydia Gifford; perhaps Phebe was his second wife. That Jeremiah, husband of Phebe (Taber, sister of Philip who mentions her in his will 12 Jan 1814), was a housewright. The will was proved on 2 May 1825. Besides his wife Phebe, it mentions son William; and daughters Phebe Carr, Mary Rice, Perlinea Grinnell, and Thuzzy Cornell.

An online family tree has Phebe's dob as 22 Feb 1747 Tiverton. So, she could be a second wife. This needs more research to confirm.

Jeremiah married Lydia Gifford Abt 1760. Lydia (daughter of John Gifford and Comfort Hart) was born Abt 1738; died Bef 14 Dec 1788. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Lydia Gifford was born Abt 1738 (daughter of John Gifford and Comfort Hart); died Bef 14 Dec 1788.
    Children:
    1. 1. Rhoda Manchester was born Abt 1761, Little Compton, RI.

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  John Gifford was born 7 Mar 1707/08, Dartmouth, Bristol Co., MA (son of Jeremiah Gifford and Mary Wright); died 18 Dec 1802, Westport, Bristol Co., MA.

    Notes:

Little Compton vital records suggest, by the placement of names and dates, that John Gifford b. 1705 d. Dec 1802 is a son of Christopher Gifford. However, Christopher does not name John as a son in his will, dated 5 Oct 1746. He does name all his (other) children, so perhaps John is not his son, as some genealogies show him to be.

I have placed him in the family of Jeremiah Gifford, as the Mayflower Descendants book indicates. This needs more research.

Some genealogies show John as having a second wife named Bathsheba who may have been the mother of one or more of his children.

The will of John Gifford, blacksmith, of Little Compton, was dated 19 Dec 1788, and proved 5 Jan 1803 at Little Compton. It mentions his son Ephraim, deceased, and four children of Ephraim: Jonathan, William, Lydia, & Esther; it also mentions by name four daughters: Judith Gifford, deceased, and her three children Ephraim, Zilla, & Judith, children of son-in-law Joseph Gifford; Elizabeth Manchester, deceased, and her five children -- Zebedee, Jabez (Isaac?), Elizabeth Burden, Judith, & Phebe; Mary Read, deceased, and her daughter Mary Taber; Lydia Manchester, deceased, and her daughter Rhoda; and possibly an unnamed daughter who would have been mother of grandson John Gibbs who is also mentioned.

John died in his 95th year.

Our possible ancestor is John's daughter Lydia, mother of Rhoda Manchester.

John married Comfort Hart Aft 24 May 1730, Little Compton, RI. Comfort (daughter of Richard Hart, Jr. and Amy Gibbs) was born 4 Apr 1710, Tiverton or Little Compton, RI; died Bef 19 Dec 1788. [Group Sheet]

  2. 7.  Comfort Hart was born 4 Apr 1710, Tiverton or Little Compton, RI (daughter of Richard Hart, Jr. and Amy Gibbs); died Bef 19 Dec 1788.

    Notes:

Comfort is not mentioned in her husband's will, so I am assuming she had passed away by that time.

    Notes:

John Gifford & Comfort Hart filed a marriage intention on 24 May 1730 at Little Compton. They may have been married in May or June.

    Children:
    1. Mary Gifford was born Abt 1731; died 14 Dec 1798.
    2. Ephram Gifford was born 18 Nov 1733; died Bef 19 Dec 1788.
    3. Elizabeth Gifford was born Abt 1734; died Bef 19 Dec 1788.
    4. 3. Lydia Gifford was born Abt 1738; died Bef 14 Dec 1788.
    5. Judith Gifford was born Abt 1743; died Bef 19 Dec 1788.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Jeremiah Gifford was born Abt 1681, Dartmouth, Bristol Co., MA (son of Robert GIFFORD and Sarah WING); died Abt 1770, Dartmouth, Bristol Co., MA.

    Notes:

A Jeremiah Gifford witnessed deed executed by Stephen Wing on the 2nd day of December, 1700, concerning Stephen's property in Sandwich, MA. If the Jeremiah who witnessed this is the son of Sarah Wing, then he was signing a deed of his grandfather.

Jeremiah & Mary settled in Dartmouth, where all of their children were born.

Jeremiah left no will, but during his lifetime deeded land to his sons Joseph, William, Jonathan, Isaac, Peleg, Benjamin, Adam, & David. Another son, Gideon, died in 1760, and in his will he mentioned by name sisters Elizabeth, Margaret (Potter), & Sarah (Parks), and a brother John.

Jeremiah & Mary had two sets of twins. Note: "Soule descendants have shown a strong genetic trait of twinning." (see "Mayflower Descendants Through Five Generations" Vol. 3 , George Soule, p. 14)

Jeremiah married Mary Wright Abt 1703, Plymouth, MA. Mary (daughter of Adam Wright and Sarah Soule) was born Between 1680 and 1685; died Aft 14 Apr 1760. [Group Sheet]

  2. 13.  Mary Wright was born Between 1680 and 1685 (daughter of Adam Wright and Sarah Soule); died Aft 14 Apr 1760.

    Notes:

There is strong speculation that Esther & Mary may have been twins, since the first three children seem to have been born so close together. "Soule descendants have shown a strong genetic trait of twinning." (see "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations" Vol. 3 , George Soule, p. 14)

Jeremiah & Mary had two sets of twins.

Mary Gifford, wife of Jeremiah, is mentioned by name in her father's will of 1723.

Mary died after her son Gideon's will of 14 Apr 1760.

    Children:
    1. Jonathan Gifford was born 25 Mar 1704, Dartmouth, MA.
    2. Gideon Gifford was born 19 Mar 1705/06, Dartmouth, MA.
    3. 6. John Gifford was born 7 Mar 1707/08, Dartmouth, Bristol Co., MA; died 18 Dec 1802, Westport, Bristol Co., MA.
    4. Sarah Gifford was born 3 Oct 1710, Dartmouth, MA.
    5. Elizabeth Gifford was born 13 Oct 1712, Dartmouth, MA.
    6. Joseph Gifford was born 13 Oct 1712, Dartmouth, MA.
    7. William Gifford was born 19 Jan 1713/14, Dartmouth, MA.
    8. Benjamin Gifford was born 14 May 1717, Dartmouth, MA.
    9. Isaac Gifford was born 14 May 1717, Dartmouth, MA.
    10. Peleg Gifford was born 1 Dec 1719, Dartmouth, MA.
    11. Margaret Gifford was born 15 Apr 1722, Dartmouth, MA.
    12. Adam Gifford was born 3 Jan 1724/25, Dartmouth, MA.
    13. David Gifford was born 5 Apr 1728, Dartmouth, MA.

  3. 14.  Richard Hart, Jr. was born Abt 1678 (son of Richard Hart, Sr.).

Richard — Amy Gibbs. Amy was born Abt 1680. [Group Sheet]

  4. 15.  Amy Gibbs was born Abt 1680.

    Notes:

According to Comfort's birth record, Amey was the second wife of Richart Hart.

    Children:
    1. 7. Comfort Hart was born 4 Apr 1710, Tiverton or Little Compton, RI; died Bef 19 Dec 1788.
