Hugh BAILEY

Notes:

Hugh Bailey was made a freeman of the Colony at Newport 2 May 1702. He came to East Greenwich from Newport sometime between 1696 and 1702. It has been reported that all of his children were by his first wife, Anna. His second wife was named Abigail Williams. However, the town records in East Greenwich suggest that he may have had a second wife named Ann, because while the birth entry for William says "eldest son of Hugh and Anna," the entry for Samuel says "eldest son of Hugh and Ann." The seven-year gap between the first two sons may allow for this possibility, also. Hugh married Anna Unknown Between 1687 and 1695. Anna was born Abt 1667, Rhode Island; died 5 Feb 1720/21. [Group Sheet]

They were married by Thomas Spencer, Justice. Apparently Hugh died not long after this marriage.

William married Grace PARSONS 26 Jun 1655, Portsmouth, RI. Grace (daughter of Hugh PARSONS, II and Mary Elizabeth LEWIS) was born 1636, Newport, RI; died 1679, Newport, RI. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

According to the book "Records of the Bailey Family," compiled by "A Descendant," Hannah C. (Bailey) Hopkins in 1895, William Bailey probably became a resident of Newport, RI, soon after settlement of the town. Since most of the early records were destroyed or damaged by the British during the Revolution, we can not be sure just when he came. However, there is a record of a transaction in which William Bailey of Newport bought of Gabriel Hicks a certain piece of land bounded partly by the sea. The date on this record is 14 June 1655. The following year, on 5 March 1656, William Bailey, Sr., , along with Gabriel Hicks, sold 21 acres in Newport to Josahua Coggeshall.

Nothing definite has been discovered about his parentage or place of origin, or dates of birth and death. It is known that his death occurred before 20 July 1670.

Notes:

On 3 July 1662 Hugh and his wife Elizabeth sold eighteen acres to William Wood. Hugh was made a freeman in 1663, and on 10 August 1667 enlisted in a "troop of horse." He was Deputy in 1678. It is thought that Elizabeth was the widow of William England, but her maiden name is not known.

A document of Hugh Parsons, dated 20 July 1670, mentions that he is custodian of the estate left to his grandson, Hugh Bailey, by his father William Bailey. He also states that upon his own death and the death of his wife, his grandson shall be sole heir of all his possessions. In his will dated 11 Jan 1684, proved 14 March 1684, he says that if Hugh should die, then the inheritance should pass on to his grandson's heirs. His wife is to bring up this grandson, and he is to be helpful to her.
