    Notes:

See will dated 9 Feb 1686/87 in "RI Genealogical Register."

There is some question about the maiden name of Thomas's wife. It has been suggested that she may have been Mary Ayers. (see notes below)

From "The Fish Family in England and America," p. 33:
"Meetinge Jan. 19, 1651, 2 acres of lande adjoining to Thomas Fish were ordered layd out to Henry Eves in lieu of land given to said Henry by the Towne formerly"

"Meetinge March 20 1660, Thomas Fish received a deed of house and land from Henry and Ann Ayres, in consideration of fencing two acres said Henry and Ann to enjoy said land for their lives without paying rent."

"Meetinge September 12 1680, Voted: John Biggs is appointed to speke to Thomas Fish that he lay out that acre of land to this townes commons which was lent to Henry eves" (Ayers/Eyers).

(source: "The Fish Family in England and America, Genealogical and Biographical Records and Sketches," by Lester Warren Fish, c 1948)

Thomas married Mary Unknown 1645, Portsmouth, RI. Mary was born 1625; died 1699, Portsmouth, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Mary Unknown was born 1625; died 1699, Portsmouth, RI.

    Notes:

Her place of birth is given in some genealogies as Portsmouth, but that is impossible, since the settlement was not begun until the middle 1930s. The Portsmouth Compact, dated 1638, does have a Phillip Shearman as one of the signers. However, his daughter named Mary was born later.

Other possibilities -- Mary Sherman, May 1624 - 1673/1699 ?, daughter of Samuel Sherman 20 Oct 1601 - Oct 1644 & Hester Burgess 1604 - 14 Aug 1646. Or, someone else has suggested she may have been Mary Soule, a daughter of George Soule.

Dr. Kenneth Parker's notes indicate Thomas Fish's wife was Mary AYERS (no source documentation given; Dr. Parker has passed away). See the following note.

"I believe that this lady was Mary Ayers whose father was Henry Ayres. She was born 1615?? and died 1699 in Portsmouth, RI. Mary Ayres married Thomas Fish in 1647 in Portsmouth. He was the son of Robert Fish and Alice Fish. I got this from RootsWeb.com by a David E. Crandall, Jr. [dcrandall.jr@prodigy.net]. A note on this RootsWeb.com site says: A notation in an issue of "Second Boat" lists her maiden name as Ayres, daughter of Henry. Submission was by Mary P. Lavery, 7 Paris Ave., Corinth, NY 12822. TORREY lists her name as [?Sherman]. The FISH genealogy very tentatively assigns her maiden name as SOULE. (RIGENWEB mailing list posting from Arlene Clarke Haddock).

See notes for her husband, Thomas Fish.

    Notes:

Information on the identity of Mary's parents and William's father and brother came from Janel Woodbury, a descendant [janel_woodbury@yahoo.com]. She also supplied the names of Alice Tripp, who married William b. 1644/45, and their daughter Deliverance. Her reference was an old book called "Representative Old Men and Families of Rhode Island."

    Notes:

The will of John Tripp of Portsmouth, carpenter, being 67 years or there about, is dated 6 October 1677 and proved 1 September 1678. It mentions by name his wife Mary; sons Abiell, John, Peleg, Joseph, & James; and daughter Martha; also granddaughter Elizabeth Wodell. Also see notes below.

Notes from "Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol II", Page 176:
John Tripp of Portsmouth, R. I., was born in 1610, and died 1678. He was one of the signers of the compact at Portsmouth, April 30, 1639. March 1, 1643, he was granted by the town three acres of land next to Thomas Gorton. On November 30, 1657, he was granted planting land on Hog Island for a period of seven years. He was an influential man in the community, occupying many offices of importance in his town and in the colony; for many years he was a member of the Town Council, and deputy to the General Assembly in 1648/54/55/58/61/62/63/64/66/67/68/69 and 72. In 1670/73/74 and 75 he was the assistant from Portsmouth. His wife was Mary Paine, daughter of Anthony and Rose of Portsmouth. His wife survived him and is mentioned in his will as Mary; she was the sole executrix of his will, dated December (or Oct) 6, 1677, and proved October 28 (or Sept 1), 1678. He left lands in Dartmouth, Portsmouth, Narragansett and Westerly to his children, and to each of his grand-children five shillings (to buy Bibles for them). His widow may have married a second time, April 4, 1682, to Benjamin Engell. Her father, Anthony Paine, died in 1650, and her mother married again, to a Mr. Weeden.

From the Tripp Family Association website: John TRIPP The Founder was christened on 8 Sep 1611 in Horkstow, Lincolnshire, England. He died on 12 Feb 1678 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island. He was born in Horkstow, Lincolnshire, England . . . By his own hand, he wrote that he had 11 brothers and sisters, so he evidently did not have much to start with. For that reason he indentured himself to Randall Holden so that he could learn the carpenter trade. He was admitted as an inhabitant of the island of Aquidneck, (Later Rhode Island), and on April 30, 1638 signed a compact with twenty-eight others . . . John Tripp married Mary Paine in 1639 and during the next 21 years had, and then reared eleven children.

John married Mary PAINE 1638, Newport, RI. Mary (daughter of Anthony PAINE and Susanna-Alice POTTER) was born Abt 1618; died 12 Feb 1686/87, Portsmouth, RI. [Group Sheet]

  6. 15.  Mary PAINE was born Abt 1618 (daughter of Anthony PAINE and Susanna-Alice POTTER); died 12 Feb 1686/87, Portsmouth, RI.

    Notes:

All ten of these children are mentioned in the 1688 will of their aunt, Alice (Paine) Strange. However, the dates of birth of Mary and some of the children have been estimated, and may not be accurate as shown here. One database emailed to me has an additional son named Sylvanus, born in 1660, died 10 May 1716.

The surname is sometimes written as Payne.
