  3. 6.  Roger Burlingame was born 24 Jan 1619/20, Kent, England; died 1 Sep 1718, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

I don't know if he had any surviving children by his first wife, who died in England. His will, dated 26 April 1711, mentions his wife Mary; sons Roger, Peter, Thomas, & John; and "all my daughters" -- although he only names Marcy & Alice. He also mentions sons-in-law Thomas Arnold & Amos Stafford. It is not clear whether all these children are by his wife Mary. Therefore, I have estimated the birth years of some of the children.

She was his second wife. Also, she may have been Mary Lippitt Barlingstone, widow of William Barlingstone who drowned in the Bay about six weeks after their marriage March 23, 1661.

According to the Burlingame Manuscript by Nelson Burlingame (1986), Vol. 1, pg. 8, Mary's will was dated March 6, 1719 and proved Feb. 3, 1720. The Executor was her son Moses. The will reads: To son-in-law Thomas Burlingame & wife Martha,

    Notes:

See "A Line of Descent from Thomas Stafford of Warwick" in the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 17, by A. G. Beaman. According to Beaman, Thomas came to Plymouth Colony about 1626, then to Providence, and soon afterward to Warwick where he lived the rest of his life.

Note copied by Trish Harmon, posted on RIKENT mailing list: "Thomas, father of Samuel, was in Plymouth, Massachusetts as early as 1626, of Portsmouth and Newport, Rhode Island in 1638, then of Providence, Rhode Island where he constructed the first grist mill at the mouth of the Moosausick River; he moved to Old Warwick from Providence in 1650 and at the head of Mill Cove built a grist mill for the settlers. Was admitted freeman in 1638 (source: Stukely Westcott book by J. Bullock)."

In 1635 Stukeley and his family accompanied the family of William Arnold to New England. Stukeley came from England to Salem, MA, where he was a freeman in 1636; his name is given in the records as "Stuky Wesket." He joined the Baptists and was banished from Massachusetts. He soon joined Roger Williams in Providence, RI, where he was one of the grantees in Roger Williams's deed of 8 Oct 1638. He signed the Providence agreement in 1640. He was also one of the founding members of the First Baptist Church in America. Stukeley later located with Samuell Gorton's group at Warwick, where records show he lived on 5 June 1648. He was Commissioner 1651-1653, and in 1655 and 1660. He was Assistant in 1653, and Deputy for Warwick in 1671. During King Philip's War he left Warwick and went to Portsmouth for safety. There he made his will on 12 Jan 1676/77, and died the same day.

John signed the "Agreement for a Form of Government" on 27 July 1640 and was chosen with nine others by the Town of Providence to meet with Commissioners from the other three towns to form a government under the Charter, 16 May 1647.

He is our direct ancestor through two of his children, Mary & Moses Lippitt. Moses' daughter Martha Lippitt and Mary's son Thomas Burlingame (first cousins) married each other and had a daughter Margaret Burlingame who married Joseph Remington, Sr. They are the ancestors of my dad, Norman Remington, through the male Remington lineage.
