I have made an assumption that Mildred remarried to a Mr. Elwood, because I have a copy of a newspaper article by a Mildred Elwood who is a granddaughter of William Remington.

    Notes:

Pictures of Alice and some information on her family and her life were provided by Tom Lavery and Patricia (Borst) Brewer, two of our cousins in Michigan.

    My research notes:
In the 1900 Federal Census, John & Alice Borst are living at Gaines, Genesee Co., MI. With them are Sumner Hunter, 13, Alice's son by her first marriage; Mildred White, 10, Alice's daughter by her second marriage; and Gladys Borst, 10 months, daughter of John & Alice. According to the census data, John & Alice have been married 7 years. For some reason, Shirley Borst, age 7, born Jan 1893, is living with a family nearby; the census says she is "A. daughter" -- suggesting adopted daughter. It says she was born in MI, and her parents were born in Ireland & Germany. I cannot read the family name she is with (possibly begins with W), although the wife is Sarah and the 6-year-old son is Arthur.

In 1910, John C. & Allie Borst are living at Flint, Genesee Co., MI. With them are children Shirley, Gladys, Hugh, & Fenton. According to the census data, Alice has had 6 children, and 5 are living at that time.

In 1920 John C. & Allie G. Borst, ages 56 & 49, are living on Flushing Rd., Flint, Genesee Co., MI. With them are the following children: Hugh G. 16, Fenton R. 11, & Cecil J. 2 (adopted son). (Is Cecil J. the son also called James, or was James a son who died young?)

In 1930, John C. & Alice G. Borst are living on Farley St., Flint, Genesee Co., MI. With them are sons Fenton R. & Cecil J., ages 20 & 12.

    Children:
    1. 3. Mildred Irene White was born 14 Jul 1890, Genessee County, MI; died 8 Sep 1956, Flint, Genessee County, MI; was buried , Glenwood Cemetery, Flint, MI.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Edward Harrison White was born 1839, Vermont (son of Harrison White and Parthenia Keeler); died 1902, Brainerd, MN.

    Notes:

In the 1870 Federal Census, Edward H. & Eliza J. White are living at Fenton, Genesee Co., MI, with her parents, William & Jane Remington. They have three children: Jessie A., Mabel P., & Edward H. Jr.

By 1880 they have divorced and Eliza has remarried.

Edward married Elizabeth Jennie Remington 25 Aug 1861, Genesee Co., MI. Elizabeth (daughter of William Remington and Jane Broadhead) was born 19 May 1844, Fenton, Genesee County, MI; died 18 Apr 1924, Lima, OH; was buried , Woodlawn, Lima, Ohio. [Group Sheet]

  2. 13.  Elizabeth Jennie RemingtonElizabeth Jennie Remington was born 19 May 1844, Fenton, Genesee County, MI (daughter of William Remington and Jane Broadhead); died 18 Apr 1924, Lima, OH; was buried , Woodlawn, Lima, Ohio.

    Notes:

Her obituary says that while she had been in ill health for some months, she died after an 18-hour illness from pneumonia.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Jane Remington is age 16 and living at Fenton, MI, with her parents, siblings, and uncle.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Eliza J. White is living with her husband Edward H. White and their three children, Jessie A., Mabel P., & Edward H. Jr. They are at Fenton, MI, with her parents, William & Jane Remington.

In 1880 she is still living there with her parents William & Jane, but has remarried to J. H. Traver, and has five children: Jessie A., Mabel P., Edward H., Harry R., & Richard E. I think all of these were by her first husband.

    Children:
    1. Jessie Alice White was born 27 Oct 1862; died Bef 1924.
    2. Mabel R. White was born 2 Aug 1865.
    3. 6. Edward Harrison White, II was born 20 Nov 1866, Fenton, Genessee County, MI; died 12 Dec 1929, Argentine Township, MI; was buried , Lakeside Cemetery, Holly, MI.
    4. Harry Remington White was born 18 Oct 1871.
    5. Richard E. White was born Abt 1875, MI.

  3. 14.  Abner Remington was born 13 Mar 1820, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI (son of Thomas REMINGTON and Alice "Elce" GRINNELL); died 6 Mar 1900, Fenton, Genesee County, MI; was buried , Oakwood Cemetery, Fenton, MI.

    Notes:

New Bedford files (seamen's insurance records) show that Abner Remington b. Tiverton, RI, applied for insurance three times: on 16 Dec 1840 he was age 21, 5'4", and said to have a light complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes; on 22 Nov 1848 he was age 28, 5' 4 3/4" and was described as having a light complexion, brown hair, and grey eyes. Another record dated 2 Dec 1848 again shows him to be age 28, but is described as having dark skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. One can only speculate why there are two applications so close together, and why he is described differently, even though the age and birthplace are the same. Two of the descriptions more or less agree.

Abner's last voyage on record ended in 1860, so he must have headed out to Michigan right after that. In the 1860 Federal Census, he is age 37, a sailor, and living at Fenton, MI, with brother William and his family. He was married in Michigan in 1863, and he is in the 1870 census for Fenton, Genesee County, MI, with his wife Eliza and two youngest daughters, Minnie 6 & Alice 2, apparently living next door to his nephew Eben and family.

In the 1860 census, Abner is also listed at New Bedford, MA, living with sister Phebe Pearce and three of her children. The census gives his age as 41, b RI.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Abner, Eliza, and daughter Alice (the second Alice), 8, are living at Mundy, Genesee Co., MI. Also in the household are Thomas Steel, age 4, stepson; and John Hunt, 20.

His obituary in The Fenton Independent:
"Abner Remington, age 80, a resident of Fenton about 50 years, died 6 March 1900 at the home of his nephew, Ebin Remington. Born in New Bedford, MA, during young manhood he was a sailor, making several trips to the whaling grounds. After retiring from the sea, he came to Fenton and purchased a farm in Mundy."

One genealogy at Rootsweb has his date of birth as 13 March 1820 (re: Kim Hawkins).

Abner married Eliza A. Bennett 18 Feb 1863, Flint, Genessee County, MI. Eliza (daughter of Charles Bennett and Caroline Thurston) was born 4 Oct 1845, Ohio; died 5 Sep 1896, Mundy Township, Genesee County, MI; was buried , Oakwood Cemetery, Fenton, MI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 15.  Eliza A. Bennett was born 4 Oct 1845, Ohio (daughter of Charles Bennett and Caroline Thurston); died 5 Sep 1896, Mundy Township, Genesee County, MI; was buried , Oakwood Cemetery, Fenton, MI.

    Notes:

Eliza was half Sioux Indian. According to descendant Patti Brewer, it is said that Eliza's father traded a team of oxen for her mother.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Eliza A. Bennett is age 7, living with her family at Augusta, Washtenaw Co., MI. In 1860 she is age 17, living with her family at Fenton, Genesee Co., MI.

Eliza married at age 19+, to Abner, who was not quite 43.

According to some genealogies, her name was Sarah Elizabeth. However, she is Eliza A. in the 1850 census, and Eliza in 1860 & 1870.

    Notes:

When they were married, Abner was not quite 43 years of age and Eliza was not yet 20.
