Samuel Brown Remington

Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Samuel B. Remington is age 18, a clerk, and living in Ward 6, Providence, RI, with grocer George & Maria Robinson. However, he appears to be listed also in Warren, where his mother and brothers are living. There he is a clerk age 17.

In the Federal Census of 1870, the family is at Providence, RI, as follows: B. Samuel Remington 37 MA, W. Harriet 37 MA, W. Samuel 12 RI, and A. Grace 8 RI; also Ellen Larey 24 Ireland, domestic servant.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Samuel & Harriett are at Providence with their two children.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Samuel & Harriet are living on Dartmouth Ave. in Providence, with their daughter Grace and her husband Richard Knight, and their two children Howard & Annie.

In the 1910 Federal Census, Samuel & Harriet are living at 15 Benevolent St. in Providence, RI, still with Richard & Grace Knight.

Samuel married Harriett M. Watson 7 Jul 1857, Rehoboth, MA. Harriett (daughter of John William Watson and Ann A. Watson) was born 24 Feb 1832, Rehoboth, MA; died 2 Oct 1916, Jamestown, RI; was buried , Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI. [Group Sheet]

1. Samuel Watson Remington was born 19 May 1858, Providence, RI; died 13 Jan 1947, Providence, RI; was buried , Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI.
2. Grace Ann Remington was born 13 Oct 1862, Providence, RI; died 24 May 1942, Johnston, RI; was buried , Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI.

Notes:

RI Genealogical Register (summary of grandfather Enoch's will) has his middle name as Walker; Martha A. Benns has it as Watson.

In the 1830 Federal Census, there is a Samuel W. Remington residing at Rehoboth, Bristol County, MA. Probably that is this Samuel.

Samuel married Harriet A. Reed 28 Nov 1819, Rehoboth, MA. Harriet was born Abt 1802, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1870. [Group Sheet]

Harriet was "of Providence." In the 1850 Federal Census, Harriet Remington is age 48 and living at Warren, Bristol Co., RI, along with two of her sons, William & John, and other individuals. In 1870 she is still at Warren, age 68, living with her daughter Harriet Talbot and family. However, she seems to have been listed twice, as she is Harriet Remmington, age 54 MA, living with William & Maria Remmington at Davenport, Iowa, also in 1870. Charles Talbot, age 20, is also there in Iowa, so it certainly is the same Harriet. Charles was likely a son of her daughter Harriet (Remington) Talbot.

Boyd Scott Remington has his date of death as 11 June 1817 (no documentation).

Enoch married Ruth Armington 5 Aug 1790, Barrington, RI. Ruth (daughter of John Armington and Ruth Kent) was born 29 Jun 1769, Rehoboth, MA; died 24 May 1857; was buried , Prince's Hill Burial Ground, County Rd., Barrington, RI. [Group Sheet]

BSR has her birth date as 29 June 1771.

The New England Historical & Genealogical Register 22, 354 says "Enoch was son of Thomas, of John of Suffolk."

The will of Micah Brown dated 4 Jan 1747/48 mentions him as "kinsman Enoch Remington." Perhaps they were cousins? (see next note)

On 15 Mar 1742/43, James Brown of Barrington was appointed to be guardian of Enoch Remington, a minor over 14 years of age, son of Thomas Remington of Barrington.

"Enock Remington" was baptized at the Newman Congregational Church, Seekonk (or East Providence) in May 1729. (see Arnold's VRs for East Providence, Church Records, p. 519) He was also a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

Boyd Scott Remington gives his dates as 1735 - 1798 (no sources). Also, he has his parents as John & Susanna of Jamestown, which is almost certainly incorrect.

The will of Enoch Remington of Barrington, RI, gentleman, was dated 21 Nov 1807, and proved 1 July 1811. In mentions his wife Molly, and several children, grandchildren, and other relatives as follows: son Enoch dec'd., leaving widow Ruth; daughters Molly Niall, Lydia Bowen, Bathiah Armington, and Mercy Armington dec'd; son-in-law Asa Armington of Rehoboth, yeoman; grandsons Samuel Walker (?) Remington & Enoch Remington, sons of Enoch dec.'d.; granddaughter Ruth Armington, daughter of Enoch dec'd.; and grandson Joseph Armington, son of Mercy dec'd. The will was witnessed by Josiah Humphrey, Jr., Benjamin Niall, & Elisha Humphrey.

Enoch married Molly Watson Abt 1756. Molly (daughter of Matthew Watson, II and Bethiah Reed) was born 5 Mar 1734/35; died 10 Oct 1820, East Providence or Barrington, RI; was buried , Prince's Hill Burial Ground, County Rd., Barrington, RI. [Group Sheet]

She may have been Molly Watson or Walker.

The RI Cemetery Database gives his dates of birth and death exactly the same as his wife's. Perhaps he is actually buried in Vermont, where he died (?), rather in the Newman Cemetery in East Providence, where Ruth is buried.

John & Ruth had 10 children: Sylvester, Joseph, Molly, Hannah, Betty, Russell, Ruth, Olive, John, & Pruda. John and his second wife Chloe had a daughter Abigail. Information on all of these is included in "The Armington Family in America," but I have given data on only the three who link to other families on this tree.
