Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Joanna L. RemingtonJoanna L. Remington was born 22 Feb 1836 (daughter of Caleb Remington, Jr. and Joanna LeValley); died 1 Jan 1917, Johnston, RI; was buried , Caleb Remington Lot, Historical Cemetery 638, Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

In the 1880 Federal Census, Joanna is 44, single, and keeping house for her two single brothers, John & Andrew.

I assume she was Joanna LeValley Remington, named after her mother.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Caleb Remington, Jr. was born Between 1783 and 1784 (son of Caleb Remington, Sr. and Roby Warner); died Between 4 Oct 1849 and 1850; was buried , Caleb Remington Lot, Historical Cemetery 32, Scituate Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

According to Caleb's gravestone, he died in his 66th year on 4 Oct 1849. However, he is age 66 in the June 1850 Federal Census.

In the 1850 Census, the Remmington household is as follows: Caleb 66 RI Machinist, Joannah L. 50 RI, John 27 RI Machine Printery (?), Andrew 25 RI (same occupation), Caleb 24 RI Laborer, Benjamin 22 RI Laborer, Christopher 17 RI Laborer, Joannah 14 RI, Joseph R. Mathewson 14 RI (probably Caleb's grand-nephew), Abraham Bennette 33 RI Farmer, and Zilpha Bennette 22 RI.

I am wondering if his marriage to Joanna was a second marriage for Caleb. I have found a William Remington born c 1808 in Foster, RI, to Caleb & Vesta Remington. He is living in Sturbridge, MA, with his family in 1850 - 1880, and died there in 1880. The death record names his parents. Since Caleb's brother William died in 1807, he may have named a son after him. Perhaps Vesta died and Caleb remarried (?).

Although I am not positive that this refers to this Caleb, the 1810 census lists the household of Caleb Remington 2nd living in Gloucester, Providence Co., RI, as follows: 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-44 (Caleb), 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-15, and 1 female 26-44. If this is indeed a first marriage, possibly to Vesta, they may have had at least 2 daughters and two sons born between 1800 and 1810. The two older girls could be other relatives (?).

The 1810 census at Glocester also lists Caleb, here as Caleb Remington Jr., with household as follows: 1 free white male 16-18, 1 free white male 16-26 including family heads, 1 free white male 26-45, and 1 free white male 45+; and 1 free white female 16-26. This seems to show that Caleb has a young wife, as his wife in 1810 was age 26-44. Assuming this is the same Caleb as in 1810, where are the daughters? Is there one son, or two, still in the household?

Adeline was born in Oct 1820, presumably after this census was taken, dated Aug.

In 1830 Caleb Remington Jr. is listed at Johnston: 2 males under 5 (Benjamin & Caleb), 2 males 5-10 (John & Andrew), 1 male 30-40 (possible a nephew, Caleb B. or William W.), 1 male 40-50 (Caleb), 1 male 80-90 (father Caleb Sr.), 1 female 5-10 (Adeline), and 1 female 30-40 (wife Joanna). They are listed next to widowed sister Sarah Remington as head of her household; see notes for her.

Caleb married Joanna LeValley 25 Nov 1819, Johnston, Providence Co., RI. Joanna (daughter of Caleb LeValley and Alice Fenner) was born Abt 8 Oct 1799; died 6 May 1876, Johnston, RI; was buried , Caleb Remington Lot, Historical Cemetery 32, Scituate Ave., Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Joanna LeValley was born Abt 8 Oct 1799 (daughter of Caleb LeValley and Alice Fenner); died 6 May 1876, Johnston, RI; was buried , Caleb Remington Lot, Historical Cemetery 32, Scituate Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

Joanna was "of Cranston, RI." In a letter handwritten by her brother Benjamin, he mentions that she was the wife of Caleb Remington of Johnston, and says that she died there at home in 1876. Her sons John & Andrew, and her daughter Joanna, continued to live in the family home throughout their adult lives.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Joanna Remington is age 60 and living at Johnston, RI. With her are the following family members: John 38, Andrew R. 36, Caleb 34, Benjamin L. 32, Christopher W. 29, Joanna 24, & William 60. I think this last individual is William Warner Remington, son of John & Sally (Paine) Remington, and thus a nephew of Joanna's husband.

However, four of these sons are listed in CA in the 1860 census at Little York, Nevada Co. See notes for them.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Joanna Remington is age 70 and living at Johnston, RI. In the household are several of her children, three grandchildren, and a daughter-in-law.

According to Joanna's gravestone, she died at age 76 years, 6 months, 28 days.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Caleb Remington, Sr. was born 16 Sep 1747, Johnston, RI (son of Joshua Remington and Elizabeth King); died Between Feb and Sep 1836, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

Caleb was a Sergeant in the Revolution. According to a manuscript (Rev. War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots) at the Knight Library in Providence, Caleb served June 1775 - Aug 1780 in Capt. General's Cavaliers. It says he was buried on the Knapp place, next to the Hughes' residence, Hughesdale, Johnston, RI. (This manuscript is now at the RI Public Library, RI Collection)

He is listed on the Pension Roll of 1835: Remington, Caleb, sergeant, Providence County, all $120, rec $360, R. I. Militia, pl Oct. 24, 1833, com March 4, 1831, age 86

I have estimated the birth years for some of Caleb's children.

There is a court document at the RI Historical Society Library, Manuscript Room, concerning $30 owed to Caleb Remington of Johnston, cooper & yeoman, by Henry Warner of Providence. The document is dated 10 January 1797. Perhaps Henry was a relative of Caleb's wife.

Capt. Caleb Remington was an innkeeper at Johnston. He also ran a blacksmith and coopering business. In 1808 he advertised his property and business for sale, with the intention of closing his business.

He appears to be living in Gloucester, Providence Co., RI, in the 1810 census: 1 male 10-15 (Stephen). 2 males 16-25 (Henry & ?), 1 male 45+ (Caleb), 2 females 10-15 (Elizabeth & ?), 2 females 16-25 (Roby Ann & Mary), and 1 female 45+ (wife Roby). The census was taken in August, and daughter Amy was married in April; so there are two unknown individuals listed.

In the 1830 census, he is likely the male age 80-90 living with Caleb Remington, Jr.

Death notice in the Columbian Centinel of 6 Aug 1836: "Capt. Caleb Remington d. at Johnston, age 90, was in the Revolution."

Excerpt from "Club and Professional Life or Rhode Island" Vol. 1 pub. 1895 (at RI College library; copy at Roger Wms. Family Assoc.), article on Henry Adolphus Remington: "Capt. Caleb, of Johnston, Rhode Island, born 1748, served in the expedition to Rhode Island in 1778, under Capt. Benjamin Stack, and no braver heart ever fluttered in man than that which pulsated in the heart of this well-known revolutionary hero. Caleb Remington, of Johnston, was admitted as a master Mason of Manchester Lodge, Anthony, Rhode Island, Nov. 17th, 1809. The Remingtons were early settlers of Providence, Johnston and Cranston. One of the oldest houses now standing in the town of Johnston is the Remington farm house, which passed from Caleb, son of Capt. Caleb, father of Judge Remington, the pioneer Judge of the town, and is now in the possession of the only surviving member of the family, Miss Joanna Remington."

Caleb married Roby Warner Abt 1776. Roby (daughter of William Warner and Susannah Briggs) was born 1755; died 14 Nov 1815, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

  3. 6.  Caleb LeValley was born Abt 1770 (son of Michael LeValley and Amy Bailey); died Aft 1 Jun 1830.

    Notes:

He is probably the Caleb Lavalley listed as a resident of Coventry, RI, in the 1830 Federal Census.

Caleb married Alice Fenner Abt 1792. Alice (daughter of Arthur Fenner and Rachel Westcott) was born Abt 1776; died 16 Oct 1858; was buried , Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 Federal Census, Aice is age 72, living at Cranston, RI, with son Cristopher and his wife Areily. Tey are next door to John O. Fenner and family.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Joshua Remington was born 1720 (son of John Remington and Mariam Blackington); died 15 Aug 1787; was buried , Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

I have not as yet confirmed that Joshua is John's son, as indicated on the ancestry chart by Boyd Scott Remington. However, it is a reasonable assumption, particularly since Joshua had a daughter named Mariam, probably named after Mariam Sweet.

Joshua became a freeman in 1742, was appointed fence viewer for Johnston in 1759, and highway overseer in 1768. He is listed in the 1777 Military Census at Johnston, RI, along with sons Stephen & Joshua, Jr..

BSR says Joshua's grave is in a cemetery on Central Ave., Johnston, but there is no listing in the RI Cemetery Database. Perhaps there was no stone, or the stone has been taken.

Several cemeteries in Johnston are now labeled as "missing."

Is he the one who built the Remington farmhouse on Central Ave.? According to information on the back of the photo, it was built in 1713.

I have estimated the birth years for some of Joshua's children.

Joshua married Elizabeth King Abt 1747. Elizabeth (daughter of John King) was born 1730; died 18 Apr 1824, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Elizabeth King was born 1730 (daughter of John King); died 18 Apr 1824, RI.

    Notes:

She is probably the Elizabeth Remington listed at Johnston, RI, in the 1800 Federal Census (listed next to Mary King).

Dr. Moses Mowry's Day Book (of Johnston) has the following entry -- I don't know if it refers to this particular Elizabeth:
"Elizabeth Remington was born the 16th day of January AD 1732."

    Children:
    1. 4. Caleb Remington, Sr. was born 16 Sep 1747, Johnston, RI; died Between Feb and Sep 1836, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

  5. 12.  Michael LeValley was born Abt 1721 (son of Peter LeValley and Sarah Unknown).

    Notes:

The names of these children came from a letter handwritten by Benjamin LeValley, b.1801.

    Michael LeValley was "of Warwick."

Michael married Amy Bailey 26 Aug 1757, Phenix, RI. Amy (daughter of William BAILEY and Rebecka STRAIGHT) was born 24 Jun 1734, East Greenwich, RI. [Group Sheet]
