Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Henry M. Remington was born Between 1779 and 1789 (son of Caleb Remington, Sr. and Roby Warner); died 30 Oct 1814, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

The RI Cemetery Database has his middle initial as H, and his year of birth as c1789. Boyd Scott Remington has the middle initial as M, and the year of birth as 1779.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Caleb Remington, Sr. was born 16 Sep 1747, Johnston, RI (son of Joshua Remington and Elizabeth King); died Between Feb and Sep 1836, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

Caleb was a Sergeant in the Revolution. According to a manuscript (Rev. War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots) at the Knight Library in Providence, Caleb served June 1775 - Aug 1780 in Capt. General's Cavaliers. It says he was buried on the Knapp place, next to the Hughes' residence, Hughesdale, Johnston, RI. (This manuscript is now at the RI Public Library, RI Collection)

He is listed on the Pension Roll of 1835: Remington, Caleb, sergeant, Providence County, all $120, rec $360, R. I. Militia, pl Oct. 24, 1833, com March 4, 1831, age 86

I have estimated the birth years for some of Caleb's children.

There is a court document at the RI Historical Society Library, Manuscript Room, concerning $30 owed to Caleb Remington of Johnston, cooper & yeoman, by Henry Warner of Providence. The document is dated 10 January 1797. Perhaps Henry was a relative of Caleb's wife.

Capt. Caleb Remington was an innkeeper at Johnston. He also ran a blacksmith and coopering business. In 1808 he advertised his property and business for sale, with the intention of closing his business.

He appears to be living in Gloucester, Providence Co., RI, in the 1810 census: 1 male 10-15 (Stephen). 2 males 16-25 (Henry & ?), 1 male 45+ (Caleb), 2 females 10-15 (Elizabeth & ?), 2 females 16-25 (Roby Ann & Mary), and 1 female 45+ (wife Roby). The census was taken in August, and daughter Amy was married in April; so there are two unknown individuals listed.

In the 1830 census, he is likely the male age 80-90 living with Caleb Remington, Jr.

Death notice in the Columbian Centinel of 6 Aug 1836: "Capt. Caleb Remington d. at Johnston, age 90, was in the Revolution."

Excerpt from "Club and Professional Life or Rhode Island" Vol. 1 pub. 1895 (at RI College library; copy at Roger Wms. Family Assoc.), article on Henry Adolphus Remington: "Capt. Caleb, of Johnston, Rhode Island, born 1748, served in the expedition to Rhode Island in 1778, under Capt. Benjamin Stack, and no braver heart ever fluttered in man than that which pulsated in the heart of this well-known revolutionary hero. Caleb Remington, of Johnston, was admitted as a master Mason of Manchester Lodge, Anthony, Rhode Island, Nov. 17th, 1809. The Remingtons were early settlers of Providence, Johnston and Cranston. One of the oldest houses now standing in the town of Johnston is the Remington farm house, which passed from Caleb, son of Capt. Caleb, father of Judge Remington, the pioneer Judge of the town, and is now in the possession of the only surviving member of the family, Miss Joanna Remington."

Caleb married Roby Warner Abt 1776. Roby (daughter of William Warner and Susannah Briggs) was born 1755; died 14 Nov 1815, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Roby Warner was born 1755 (daughter of William Warner and Susannah Briggs); died 14 Nov 1815, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

    Roby's parents were "of Cranston."

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Joshua Remington was born 1720 (son of John Remington and Mariam Blackington); died 15 Aug 1787; was buried , Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

I have not as yet confirmed that Joshua is John's son, as indicated on the ancestry chart by Boyd Scott Remington. However, it is a reasonable assumption, particularly since Joshua had a daughter named Mariam, probably named after Mariam Sweet.

Joshua became a freeman in 1742, was appointed fence viewer for Johnston in 1759, and highway overseer in 1768. He is listed in the 1777 Military Census at Johnston, RI, along with sons Stephen & Joshua, Jr..

BSR says Joshua's grave is in a cemetery on Central Ave., Johnston, but there is no listing in the RI Cemetery Database. Perhaps there was no stone, or the stone has been taken.

Several cemeteries in Johnston are now labeled as "missing."

Is he the one who built the Remington farmhouse on Central Ave.? According to information on the back of the photo, it was built in 1713.

I have estimated the birth years for some of Joshua's children.

Joshua married Elizabeth King Abt 1747. Elizabeth (daughter of John King) was born 1730; died 18 Apr 1824, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Elizabeth King was born 1730 (daughter of John King); died 18 Apr 1824, RI.

    Notes:

She is probably the Elizabeth Remington listed at Johnston, RI, in the 1800 Federal Census (listed next to Mary King).

Dr. Moses Mowry's Day Book (of Johnston) has the following entry -- I don't know if it refers to this particular Elizabeth:
"Elizabeth Remington was born the 16th day of January AD 1732."

    Children:
    1. 2. Caleb Remington, Sr. was born 16 Sep 1747, Johnston, RI; died Between Feb and Sep 1836, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.
    2. John Remington was born Abt 1749; died Between 8 Jan 1772 and 20 Jun 1785.

William — Susannah Briggs. Susannah was born Abt 1730. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Susannah Briggs was born Abt 1730.

    Notes:

Susannah was "of Robert, of East Greenwich."

    Children:
    1. 3. Roby Warner was born 1755; died 14 Nov 1815, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  John Remington was born Abt 1690, Portsmouth, RI (son of Thomas REMINGTON, I and Mary ALLEN); died 18 Jul 1723, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

The Remington chart by Boyd Scott Remington at RIHSL has the following information for this John Remington:
born 1695 at Warwick, RI, died 8 Jul 1723 at Johnston, RI; freeman 1718; purchased land on Drybrook 1721, retained in family until 1835; married Mariam Sweet; had son Joshua born 1720, died 15 Aug 1787 at Johnston. Mariam (Sweet) Remington later married Ebenezer Greene (b. 8 Feb 1701) on 1 Aug 1724; she married third Edward Capron on 1730.

The chart also shows the son Joshua marrying Elizabeth King, b. 1730, d. 18 Apr 1824. Supposedly they had 7 or 8 children, including a son Caleb and a daughter Mariam.

No documentation is provided. This needs more research. However, I am including BSR's information on John's son Joshua because it is the link to Caleb Remington & Roby Warner, whose information I have researched and confirmed. Note, that Joshua is Caleb's father has not been personally verified by me; or, that Mariam's husband is the John Remington in this family group.

John married Mariam Blackington Abt 1720. Mariam (daughter of Pentecost Blackington and Ann Pederick) was born Abt Mar 1694/95, Marblehead, MA; died Aft 1756. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Mariam Blackington was born Abt Mar 1694/95, Marblehead, MA (daughter of Pentecost Blackington and Ann Pederick); died Aft 1756.

    Notes:

She was the widow of John Remington when she married Ebenezer.

    Children:
    1. 4. Joshua Remington was born 1720; died 15 Aug 1787; was buried , Johnston, RI.

  3. 10.  John King
    Children:
    1. 5. Elizabeth King was born 1730; died 18 Apr 1824, RI.
