Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Anthony Remington was born 4 Apr 1758, Warwick, RI (son of Ruel Remington and Robie Rice); died Abt 11 Nov 1833, Freedom, Portage County, OH; was buried , Drakesburg Cemetery, Portage County, OH.

    Notes:

Anthony served in the Revolutionary War. His pension claim is #W4791, viewable at NARA on microfilm. I have viewed this file twice. It says he lived in Warwick, RI, where he enlisted in August 1776. He served as a marine (mariner) in Captain Duvall's company, on board the ship Providence, under Captain Abraham Whipple. He later served under Captain Rice until 1781. (see further notes below on military service)

In August 1818 Anthony was residing in Tolland, Hampden County, MA. He appears there in the 1820 & 1830 Federal Censuses. In the fall of 1833 he moved to Ohio, where his daughter Fanny and her husband William P. Barnes had located. In the 1830 census, an Anthony Remington is at Howland, Trumbull Co., OH. Might he have been visiting at that time? His son Virgilius is at Fowler, OH, that year.

The file notes that Anthony died "8-10-30 Nov 1833 in Freedom, Portage County, Ohio." It also states that he was married to Hannah sometime in the winter of 1781/82, probably March, in Westerly, RI. Her year of birth is given as 1762, but no surname is noted; she died 1 Aug 1842 at Fowler, Trumbull County, Ohio.

According to the pension file, in 1820 he stated the names of his children as: Mercy 22, Joseph W. 17, Anthony Rice 13, Lyman I. or J. 6, and Emeline M 3. I do not know where all of his children were born -- RI or MA.

    A copy of a Bible record has the following: Rhoda 8 Oct 1782; Josiah 22 Sept 1784; Fannah, Fanny, or Frances 17 Aug 1786, m. 1809 to Wm. P. Barnes, b. in Granville (Tolland), MA; Charles 27 June 1788; Huldah 21 Feb 1791; Hannah 29 Jan 1793; Sally 4 Dec 1796; Mercy 28 Jul 1798; Lyman 28 Mar 1800; Virgilious 6 June 1805; Anthony Rice 7 Nov 1807.

Anthony & Hannah (Otter) Remington moved to Fowler, Ohio, to live with daughter Fannie Barnes, where Anthony died one week after arriving (Nov 11, 1833).

The following note is from Karen Hermann:
"The land records for Josiah Remington place him in Tolland, MA, in Oct 1833 and in Freedom, OH, in June 1834; since his father Anthony died in Freedom on 31 Nov 1833, according to the Anthony's pension record, I believe Josiah was the one who brought him to Ohio. He stated in an affidavit in 1823 that Josiah was his only means of support."

Here is an interesting web site done by one of his descendants: http://www.scuttlebuttsmallchow.com/prov.html

    From another site:
"Anthony Remington, from Warwick, Rhode Island: Enlisted as a Marine in late August 1776 aboard the frigate Providence, which laid in Providence Harbor at the time, under Capt. Duval, Captain of Marines; and John Channing, 1st Lt of Marines. Term of enlistment: 12 months. Providence was commanded by Commodore Abraham Whipple. Honorably discharged twelve months later while the "Providence" lay in Providence River. Discharge signed by Commodore Abraham Whipple. After leaving the Marine Corps, his health impaired, Remington served every year in the local militia (Pawtuxet Rangers, of which he was a founding member) until 1781, and also as a coast watcher for the Navy. He endured ill health and poverty for the rest of his life, alleviated in part by pensions awarded for his military service. Remington's great-great-great grandson, Alpheus Appenheimer, served with the Marines in France in 1918. His great-great-great-great-great grandson, Mitchell B. Young, served with the Marines in Vietnam."

    Granville, MA, records this death:
    1787 REMINGTON -, ch. Mr. Remington, -, 1787. P.R.6. more Death Granville
(I don't know how this fits into the family; needs more research. Perhaps an infant was born and died that year.)

Anthony married Hannah Utter 3 Mar 1782, Westerly, RI. Hannah was born 3 Sep 1762, Westerly, RI; died 1 Aug 1842, Fowler, Trumbull County, OH. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Hannah Utter was born 3 Sep 1762, Westerly, RI; died 1 Aug 1842, Fowler, Trumbull County, OH.

    Notes:

Some online genealogies have her surname as Otter, but the Utter family has roots at Westerly among its earliest settlers. This is why I have given her maiden name as Utter. "Otter" may be an English translation of Dutch or German. See the book "Some of the Descendants of Nicholas Utter of Westerly, RI."

I have made an assumption that her birthplace was Westerly, where she was married.

From an email by Donald Clink:
Utter is Swedish for "Otter". Some of early American records refer to this family as Otter. The Utters beginning with Nicholas Utter abt. 1630-1722 are an old Rhode Island family with Nicholas a Swedish soldier recruit settling first in New Sweden (present state of Delaware) and from at least the 1670's onward he and his family are in Newport, Kingstown and Westerly. He died in 1722 and was apparently buried in Stonington, Connecticut near the Rhode Island border.
    Donald Clink

    Notes:

The exact date of marriage was taken from The Belva Hall Burlingame family history. The Revolutionary War Pension file says sometime in the winter of 1781/2, probably March.

  1. 4.  Ruel Remington was born Abt 1736, Warwick, RI (son of Daniel Remington, Sr. and Ann Gorton); died Aft 1790.

    Notes:

Ruel's parentage has never been proven, but various reliable sources have placed him in this family group. (This needs more research to confirm.)

During the Revolutionary War, Ruel served in Captain Daniel Jenkes's Company, as well as several short enlistments. He was at Warwick, able to bear arms, in the 1777 military census.

He was also a private in Col. Elliott's Regiment in 1776, pay due 26 pounds, 11 shillings, 5 pence.

The name is also spelled Reuel. It is a Bible name meaning "the shepherd" or "friend of God" or "God is his friend." (for more information see: http://www.reference-guides.com/isbe/R/REUEL/e )

Ruel married Robie Rice Abt 1754. Robie (daughter of Thomas Rice and Mary Holden) was born 27 Mar 1736, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1779. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Daniel Remington was ensign of Militia, 2nd Company for Warwick, in 1730 - 1733. Very likely it was this Daniel.

Warwick Land Evidence, dated 22 Nov 1736: Stephen Remington of Providence, mariner, sold to Jonathan Remington of East Greenwich, mariner, one lot in Chippowinoxit, Warwick, Lot #16, one and one-half acres; signed by Stephen Remington, witnessed by Dan Remington. (These three were brothers.)

He is probably the Daniel Remington listed for Warwick in the 1774 RI Census.

In the book "Remington Family" Martha A. Benns has Daniel's date of birth as 18 October 1681, but this is too early because he is said to be under 21 in his father's will dated 1710. Cherry Fletcher Bamberg has the year as 1689.
