2. Freelove Turner was born 1834, NY or Ohio; died 1875, Ludington, Mason County, MI.
3. Joseph Nichols R. Turner was born 13 May 1835, NY or OH.
4. Daniel S. Turner was born Abt 1839, Ohio.
5. Elijah N. Turner was born 19 Feb 1842, Ohio; died 17 Jan 1865, Jeffersonville, IN.

Notes:

I am making an assumption that the marriage and death information here applies to this Joseph N. Remington, as I have found no other one to which they could apply. The only discrepancy is the birth date from MI/NY/Ohio descendants, which they have as February 1763. As such discrepancies are frequently found, it is only one of many factors to consider. This family group is a subject of ongoing research, and corrections are welcomed.

From Joseph's Rev. War Pension file: On 22 April 1818, Joseph N. Remington, formerly of Rhode Island but of New York State at this time, said he was 55 years old. (Later he went to Ohio, around Sept 1839, as noted in the file.) His sworn statement says he enlisted 3 Jan 1781 at Warwick, RI. He was honorably discharged at Saratoga, NY, on 3 Jan 1784, where he was present at the taking of Lord Cornwallis. Joseph's pension statement was signed with an X. A statement dated 28 June 1820 states that Joseph lives in the town of Alfred, NY, in Allegany Co. At that time he stated that he was a farmer, that he had no real estate, and that his wife of fifty years of age was very infirm. He himself is subject to rheumatism. He names his six children as follows: Daniel 18, Potter 14, John 10, Loasie 16, Charlotte 12, & Fanny 6. There is also reference to a note due him in the amount of 8.25 from Thomas Remington; no relationship is specified, but this could be his father.

According to information provided by descendant Carol Burford:

Joseph served for 7 years in the Revolutionary War, including Saratoga. He came as a pioneer to Allegany County, NY.

1810 census: Plymouth, Chenango Co., NY
1818: applied for military pension; had enlisted in RI and served in the Revolutionary War
1820 census: Alfred, Allegany Co., NY
1830 census: Independence, Allegany Co., NY
1840 census: Groton Twp., Erie County, OH (Joseph and his wife were living with daughter Charlotte and family)

Joseph married Ruth Briggs Abt 1792. Ruth (daughter of Richard Briggs and Phebe Place) was born 6 Aug 1769, East Greenwich, RI; died Aft 1840, Groton Twp., Erie County, OH. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

There is uncertainty as to which Ruth Briggs was the wife of Joseph N. Remington. There were two Ruths of the same name, born the same year, both apparently in Rhode Island -- and, it so happens that they were first cousins. However, it seems very possible that Joseph's wife was this one, as she was born in East Greenwich, as Joseph was.

Interestingly, Ruth's birth entry and Joseph's birth entry are on facing pages in the old record book of births in East Greenwich.

So, the birth date and parent data for Joseph's wife are based on an assumption, subject to further research. In any case, the two Ruths have the same grandparents in the Briggs ancestral line. Data on the other Ruth Briggs can also be found on this family tree, since she not only ties into the Briggs line, but also is a descendant of the Bailey family, who are in our own direct ancestry.

Any further information on this marriage is welcomed.

Notes:

The marriage record names him as Thomas Remington, of Daniel of Warwick. This is the most likely family group in which to place him. Several genealogists have done so, but realize it is an assumption or "educated guess." His birth is not found in the Warwick vital records along with Samuel, Mary, & Daniel.

He left his wife Freelove around Jan 1765, and lived "in adultery." She petitioned for divorce in 1771, and it was granted. Did Thomas have children by another woman, or have a second marriage? See notes for Freelove.

His daughter's marriage record mentions her father Thomas, dec'd; thus I have entered his date of death as bef. 20 Dec 1789.

Thomas married Freelove Nichols 16 Aug 1759, East Greenwich, RI. Freelove (daughter of Joseph Nichols and Freelove Matteson) was born 7 Aug 1740; died Aft Apr 1771. [Group Sheet]

"In April 1771 Freelove Remington petitioned for divorce from Thomas Remington, 'late of Warwick, mariner.' She told how he changed after marriage: 'the fatal Knot being Ti'd the Smilling Affability of the Lover and Friend was converted into the Stern Severity of a Tyrant' and he treated her with 'implacable Fury' . . . She alleged that he had abandoned her in Jan 1765 and ever after lived in adultery. The petition was granted." The marriage registration in East Greenwich vital records says the officiant was Giles Peirce, Justice. However, whoever recorded it may have made an error, since the marriage is in Elder Gorton's personal journal, where the entry states that he married them. The date in East Greenwich VRs is 23 Aug 1759.

Unfortunately this marriage was not a success. "In April 1771 Freelove Remington petitioned for divorce from Thomas Remington, 'late of Warwick, mariner.' She told how he changed after marriage: ' . . . the fatal Knot being Ti'd the Smilling Affability of the Lover and Friend was converted into the Stern Severity of a Tyrant' and he treated her with 'implacable Fury' (Kent County Superior Court, April 1771, Judicial Archives at Pawtucket, RI). She alleged that he abandoned her in Jan. 1765 and ever after lived in adultery. Richard married Phebe Place 6 Apr 1758, East Greenwich, RI. Phebe (daughter of Thomas Place, Jr. and Margaret Stafford) was born Abt 1737. [Group Sheet]

Daniel Remington was ensign of Militia, 2nd Company for Warwick, in 1730 - 1733. Very likely it was this Daniel.

Warwick Land Evidence, dated 22 Nov 1736: Stephen Remington of Providence, mariner, sold to Jonathan Remington of East Greenwich, mariner, one lot in Chippowinoxit, Warwick, Lot #16, one and one-half acres; signed by Stephen Remington, witnessed by Dan Remington. (These three were brothers.)

He is probably the Daniel Remington listed for Warwick in the 1774 RI Census.

In the book "Remington Family" Martha A. Benns has Daniel's date of birth as 18 October 1681, but this is too early because he is said to be under 21 in his father's will dated 1710. Cherry Fletcher Bamberg has the year as 1689.

Daniel married Ann Gorton 16 Feb 1722/23, Warwick, RI. Ann (daughter of Samuel Gorton and Elizabeth Collins) was born 19 Feb 1695/96, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

He was probably the Joseph Nichols whose will was dated 13 Oct 1757, proved 15 Nov 1757, at East Greenwich. The will mentions his wife Freelove Nichols, and two daughters, Freelove Nichols and Hannah Hill.
