Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Thomas Sweet was born Abt 1740 (son of Philip Sweet, III and Lydia Rice).

Thomas married Deborah Wightman 24 Apr 1760. Deborah (daughter of John Wightman and Phebe Havens) was born Abt 1740. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Philip Sweet, III was born 22 Nov 1713, Warwick, RI (son of Philip Sweet, II and Elizabeth Blackington); died Between 1787 and 1788, West Greenwich, RI.

    Notes:

I am making an assumption that the Philip Sweet, Jr., who married Lydia Rice is the son of Philip Sweet who is mentioned as father in the will of Pentecost Sweet. In that will, Pentecost also mentions that his brohter Philip has two sons, Pentecost & John.

Philip married Lydia Rice 25 Jan 1739/40, Warwick, RI. Lydia (daughter of John Rice, II and Elnathan Whipple) was born 30 Dec 1711, Warwick, RI; died Aft 11 Mar 1777. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Philip Sweet, II was born Between 1675 and 1785 (son of Philip Sweet, I and Unknown Wife).

    Notes:

I am making an assumption that the Philip Sweet mentioned as a son in the will of Philip Sweet (dated 12 Dec 1709 at Warwick) is the same Philip Sweet mentioned as a father in the will of Pentecost Sweet (dated 5 April 1760 at Warwick). The dates seem to fit, and some of the children's names are the same in succeeding generations. However, this needs more research to confirm.

  1. 8.  Philip Sweet, I was born 15 Jul 1655, Warwick, RI (son of James Sweet and Mary Greene); died Abt Dec 1710, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Philip's will mentions a wife (unnamed), a son Philip, and a daughter Renewed.

A message board posting says that Philip married Elizabeth Allen (widow of William Allen). (SWEET-L Archives at Rootsweb)

I have made an assumption that Philip died at Warwick, his place of residence.

Some genealogies have a Renewed Sweet marrying a John Remington. Is Renewed the same person as Mariam Sweet?

Philip — Unknown Wife. [Group Sheet]

    2. 4. Philip Sweet, II was born Between 1675 and 1785.

Pentecost and his family moved from Marblehead to Attleboro around 1700. (sources: Representative Men and families of Southeastern MA, Vol 3 p 1472 & 1472; A Sketch of the History of Attleborough, p 516; other books at Google Books)

The will of Pentecost Blackinton, yeoman, of Attleboro, was dated 23 Sep 1715, and probated 1 Nov 1715. It mentions but does not name his wife; mentions sons Benjamin (eldest) and Pentecost, and daughter Elizabeth; mentions but does not name "all my other children." (source: Abstracts of Bristol County, Massachusetts Probate Records, 1687-1745 By H. L. Peter Rounds, p 68; Google Books)

The following notes are from Norma Roberts:

Cherry Fletcher Bamberg has done extensive work on John Rice and his life. See her work for more info.

The name John Rice ("John Riss") shows up in Warwick records for the first time on 13 Jan 1661, when he joined Edmund Calverly and Randall Holden in witnessing an indenture. John O. Austin, who published a biographical sketch of John Rice, says he came from old England with Mr. (Edmund) Calverly.

No source has identified John's parents but he was very close to Edmund Calverly, and given the difference in their ages (Calverly was born in 1613), it can be assumed that John may have been an apprentice of Calverly's or some kind of relative back in England. Calverly made a deed of gift to John and Elizabeth Rice on 18 Nov 1676 "in consideration of the Love and affection which I have," but mentions no relationship. Calverly also made a second, also unexplained, deed of gift 23 Jan 1677/78 to John Rice alone.

No proof of when his wife Elizabeth died or whether he remarried, or no birth records of his children's births can be found in Warwick records. He had two sons to whom he made deeds of gift, but it is possible he may have had one or more daughters (unknown at this time). Elizabeth may have died young and John never remarried and this could explain why only two children are found for John and Elizabeth.

John married Elizabeth Holden 16 Jul 1674, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Elizabeth (daughter of Randall HOLDEN and Frances DUNGAN) was born Aug 1652, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

  6. 13.  Elizabeth Holden was born Aug 1652, Warwick, RI (daughter of Randall HOLDEN and Frances DUNGAN).

    Notes:

Possibly Elizabeth died shortly after their second child was born. No record has been found of other children being born to this couple.

    1. 6. John Rice, II was born Abt 1675, Warwick, RI; died 9 Jan 1755, Warwick, RI.
