(source: email from Ann Remington with image of will)

Some genealogies show Jonathan b Sep 1761 (md. Martha Sprague) as a son in this family.

Also, some genealogies show no Stephen here (see notes for Stephen).

Joshua married Elizabeth Trundy 13 Jun 1712, Kittery, ME. Elizabeth was born Abt 1690; died Aft 1730. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Elizabeth Trundy was born Abt 1690; died Aft 1730.

    Notes:

Pat Boyden's genealogy report has Elizabeth's year of birth as 1689 and her father as George, no sources noted.

I have roughly estimated her year of birth as c1690.

    Notes:

The Remington Ancestry Chart by Boyd Scott Remington has the date of marriage as 13 June 1710, and location as Kittery, Maine. Unfortunately, no source is noted. The online genealogy of Ann M. Mcallister (at genealogy.com) has their marriage on 13 June 1712 at Old Eliot (now Kittery), Maine, as does the Remington genealogy compiled by Lois Remington Smith.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Thomas Remington was born Abt 1662, Rowley, MA (son of Daniel Remington and Hannah Unknown); died Aft 1694.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and/or to other sources as noted herein.)

I am not sure that Thomas belongs with these parents. However, the Remington Ancestry Chart by Boyd Scott Remington shows him here, and in the absence of other evidence, I am likewise placing him here, pending further research. See notes for his assumed father, Daniel.

Additional support for this comes from "Genealogical and Family History of Western New York" by William Richard Cutter (New York: Lewis Historical Pub. Co., 1912), p. 978: "Thomas Remington, grandson of John Remington, the pioneer in this country, settled at Hingham, MA, and married there, March 16, 1687, Remember, daughter of Samuel & Mary (Farrow) Stowell."

However, "New England Families" Vol. 1, Genealogies and Memorials, p. 381, says this Thomas was "son of Thomas." Since he wasn't Thomas II (who married Mehitable Walker), and certainly wasn't a son of Thomas II (since his son Thomas lived 1659 - 1683, and died in CT), which Thomas could he have been a son of? Either there was another Thomas Remington who immigrated from England, or else it is an error. The only known son of John whose son Thomas could have been, is Daniel, as far as my records show (limitations acknowleged).

Many of the early immigration records and town records have been destroyed by fire, so it may be impossible to determine the facts in some of these cases.

In summary, it has not been proven that this Thomas is a descendant of the first Remington immigrant, John; however, it is a reasonable assumption. If he is not a direct descendant, he is very likely a close relative, having come with the same surname to precisely the same geographical area as the other Remingtons.

Pat Boyden's genealogy has a birthdate of 15 July 1659 - no source noted. However, I know that this is the birth date of the Thomas Jr. who died at Suffield, CT, in 1683. But, Thomas & Remember had children after that date. Could the date of death recorded at Suffield, CT, be incorrect? The Suffield Historical Society has no marriage for Thomas Jr. in CT, and they have his date of death as 1683. No further information seems to be available. Therefore, it seems reasonable to believe that these are two different Thomases.

Thomas Remington appears in the records of Hingham, MA, for four or five years, approximately 1687/8 - 1694 (source: "A Remington Family History" by Lois Remington Smith, p. A-6).

Lois Remington Smith also mentions that Peter Hobart was pastor of the Old Meeting House in Hingham, which is said to be the oldest church in the US in continuous use as a house of worship (p. 3). The names Jael & Joshua were common in his family, so it is of interest to see them in this Remington family.

A discussion of Thomas's parentage is found in the above-mentioned source by Smith, pp. 1 and A-6. Among other issues, Smith raises the possibility that this Thomas may be one and the same as Thomas Remington b 4 Feb 1655/56 of RI, who married Mary Allen. However, this is impossible, because Mary Allen is named as Marie Remington in her father's will of 1685; also, his will names all the children.

A key question is, what became of Thomas after he was widowed in 1694?

Thomas married Remember Stowell 16 Mar 1686/87, Hingham, Plymouth, MA. Remember (daughter of Samuel Stowell, I and Mary Farrow) was born 22 Apr 1662, Hingham, Plymouth County, MA; died 5 Nov 1694, Hingham, Plymouth County, MA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Remember Stowell was born 22 Apr 1662, Hingham, Plymouth County, MA (daughter of Samuel Stowell, I and Mary Farrow); died 5 Nov 1694, Hingham, Plymouth County, MA.

    Notes:

Some genealogies have Remember marrying a different Thomas, a son of Daniel & Hannah. That is a possibility, if indeed Daniel had such a son. (Needs more research at Boston)

    Notes:

This marriage is noted in "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" by Clarence Almon Torrey. However, the entry does not indicate who Thomas's parents are.

Their marriage bond dated 4 Mar 1687 is in Supreme Court Record No. 13011 (source: "A Remington Family History" by Lois Remington Smith, p. 1).

    Children:
    1. Jael Remington was born 22 Apr 1688, Hingham, Plymouth, MA.

    3. Mary Remington was born 9 May 1691, Hingham, Plymouth, MA; died 1 Sep 1758.
    4. Abigail Remington was born 27 Feb 1692/93, Hingham, Plymouth County, MA.

  3. 12.  Samuel Stowell, II was born 18 May 1655, Hingham, Plymouth, MA (son of Samuel Stowell, I and Mary Farrow); died 21 Sep 1695, Hingham, Plymouth, MA.

Samuel married Rachel Gill 13 Jan 1683/84, Hingham, Plymouth, MA. Rachel was born 3 Oct 1661, Hingham, Plymouth, MA; died 5 Apr 1715, Hingham, Plymouth, MA. [Group Sheet]

  4. 13.  Rachel Gill was born 3 Oct 1661, Hingham, Plymouth, MA; died 5 Apr 1715, Hingham, Plymouth, MA.
    Children:
    1. 6. Samuel Stowell, III was born 5 Jun 1687, Hingham, Plymouth, MA; died 8 Dec 1756, Hingham, Plymouth, MA.
