Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Harris Northrop was born 15 Jul 1793, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY (son of Remington Northup, Sr. and Amy Knowles); died 15 Aug 1849, Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY.

Harris — Lydia Spencer. Lydia was born Abt 1790, Cheshire, Berkshire Co. MA; died 27 Nov 1828, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. Henry Harris Northrop was born , Utica, NY.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Remington Northup, Sr. was born 1 Feb 1764, North Kingstown, RI (son of William Northup and Ann Slocum); died 1829, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY.

    Notes:

The birth record for Remington Northup says he was a son of Nicholas & Ann (Slocum) Northup. Was this a clerk's error? I have a marriage for another Ann Slocum to Nicholas, William's older brother; but supposedly she died defore Remington would have been born. This puzzling entry needs more research.

At the present time I am assuming that Remington was indeed a son of William & Ann. He went to Oneida, NY, as they did. Also, he named a son William.

Remington married Amy Knowles Abt 1791. Amy was born Abt 1769. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Amy Knowles was born Abt 1769.
    Children:
    1. 1. Harris Northrop was born 15 Jul 1793, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY; died 15 Aug 1849, Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY.
    2. William Northrop was born 1796, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY.
    3. Remington Northrop, Jr. was born 1798, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY; died 1850.
    4. Emma Amy Northrop was born Abt 1805, NY; died 28 Jan 1877; was buried , Riverview Cemetery, Henrietta, NY.
    5. Harriet Northrop was born Abt 1808.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  William Northup was born 8 Dec 1732, South Kingstown, RI (son of Nicholas Northup and Freelove Eldred); died Abt 21 May 1827, Newport, Herkimer Co., NY; was buried , Baptist Churchyard, Deerfield, Oneida, Co., NY.

    Notes:

William & Ann had 12 children, including a set of twins. They migrated to Onieda Co., NY, sometime around 1800.

I would like to find out where the name Remington (for one of their sons) comes from.

William was a Drum Major in the RI troops in the Revolutionary War. His gravestone is inscribed "A hero of the Revolution."

There is a very interesting account of this family and some allied families in both RI & NY, titled "Biography of Henry Knowles Greene, Town of New Haven, NY" [http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyoswego/biographies/hgreene.html].

William married Ann Slocum 16 Aug 1761, Jamestown, RI. Ann (daughter of Samuel Slocum and Anne Gould) was born 25 May 1742, South Kingstown, RI; died 6 Dec 1831, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Ann Slocum was born 25 May 1742, South Kingstown, RI (daughter of Samuel Slocum and Anne Gould); died 6 Dec 1831, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY.

    Notes:

I am making an assumption that this marriage in Jamestown, for Ann Slocum, daughter of Samuel & Ann, puts the bride in this family group, even though I have not found a birth record for her as yet (needs more research).

    Notes:

William, of Nicholas & Freelove, deceased, of North Kingstown, married Ann Slocum, of Samuel & Ann, deceased, 16 Aug 1761, Jamestown.

    Children:
    1. 2. Remington Northup, Sr. was born 1 Feb 1764, North Kingstown, RI; died 1829, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Nicholas Northup was born 20 Jan 1689/90 (son of Stephen Northup, Jr. and Mary Thomas); died Abt Oct 1765, North Kingstown, RI.

    Notes:

The will of Nicholas Northup of North Kingstown mentions his (probably third) wife Sarah, four unnamed daughters, and the following sons: William, Thomas, Gideon, Nicholas, and Rouse. I do not know which children were born of which wife.

Some genealogies have his first wife as Abigail Slocum or Abigail Eldred. I have not been able to confirm this, but have included her with some estimated dates, pending further research. If Nicholas was in fact married before he married Freelove, some of the children -- particularly Thomas -- may have been of this first marriage.

Nicholas married Freelove Eldred 23 Jun 1720, North Kingstown, RI. Freelove (daughter of Daniel Eldred and Mary Phillips) was born Abt 1700; died Between 1750 and 1761, North Kingstown, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Freelove Eldred was born Abt 1700 (daughter of Daniel Eldred and Mary Phillips); died Between 1750 and 1761, North Kingstown, RI.

    Notes:

In her mother's will, proved 24 Dec 1750 at North Kingstown, RI, Freelove is mentioned as the wife of Nicholas Northup of North Kingstown, Esq. It is not known exactly when this will was written, but I am assuming for the present that Freelove was still living in 1750, when her mother's will was proved.

    Notes:

Nicholas & Freelove were married by Rouse Helme, Justice of the Peace.

    Children:
    1. Thomas Northup was born Abt 1721.
    2. Abigail Northup was born Abt 1723.
    3. Nicholas Northup, Jr. was born Abt 1724; died 23 Jul 1805, Providence, RI.
    4. Eunice Northup was born Abt Nov 1726.
    5. Gideon Northup was born 28 Jan 1727/28; died 1 Oct 1813, North Kingstown, RI.
    6. Rouse Northup was born Abt Mar 1729/30.
    7. 4. William Northup was born 8 Dec 1732, South Kingstown, RI; died Abt 21 May 1827, Newport, Herkimer Co., NY; was buried , Baptist Churchyard, Deerfield, Oneida, Co., NY.
    8. Daniel Northup was born Abt Apr 1734, North Kingstown, RI; died Nov 1734, North Kingstown, RI.
    9. Ann Northup was born Abt 1736.

  3. 10.  Samuel Slocum was born 9 Sep 1711 (son of Samuel Slocum and Hannah Carr); died Abt Feb 1775, Jamestown, RI.

    Notes:

    Exeter Land Evidence:
In 1741 Samuel Slocum of Jamestown and Ann his wife deeded two pieces of land to his "infant" brother Peleg of North Kingstown, one piece to brother Moses, and one piece to brother John. Probably "infant" means minor; otherwise, his father must have had a younger second wife. In any case, Peleg would have been born prior to 18 June 1741.

In 1753 Samuel Slocum of Jamestown, yeoman, and Hannah his wife sold two tracts of land to "John Raynolds."

From the location and content of these two items of land evidence, these two Samuels appear to be the same individual, although possibly the second deed could pertain to his parents, also Samuel & Hannah. I do not know when they died.

Samuel's will dated 16 January 1775 (if it is indeed his will) says he is "aged." It mentions no wife, but mentions a deceased brother Benjamin Slocum (according to a transcript of the will in the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 3 No. 3 p. 250). This is confusing because no genealogies I have consulted list a sibling Benjamin for this Samuel. However, I have added him (see note at Benjamin).

The will also mentions Samuel's children as follows: Samuel, Jr., of Jamestown; William, of Newport; Peleg; Abel; Sarah (Anrick?); Penelope; and Rhoda.

Samuel married Anne Gould 1733, North Kingstown, RI. Anne (daughter of John Gould and Elizabeth Gardiner) was born Abt 1713; died Bef Nov 1746. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Anne Gould was born Abt 1713 (daughter of John Gould and Elizabeth Gardiner); died Bef Nov 1746.

    Notes:

Samuel & Anne were married by George Thomas, Justice.

    Children:
    1. Avis Slocum was born 14 May 1734; died 22 May 1814.
    2. Samuel Slocum was born 11 Feb 1736/37.
    3. William Slocum was born Abt 1739.
    4. 5. Ann Slocum was born 25 May 1742, South Kingstown, RI; died 6 Dec 1831, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY.
