Generation: 1

  1. 1.  William Northup was born 8 Dec 1732, South Kingstown, RI (son of Nicholas Northup and Freelove Eldred); died Abt 21 May 1827, Newport, Herkimer Co., NY; was buried , Baptist Churchyard, Deerfield, Oneida, Co., NY.

    Notes:

William & Ann had 12 children, including a set of twins. They migrated to Onieda Co., NY, sometime around 1800.

I would like to find out where the name Remington (for one of their sons) comes from.

The birth record for Remington Northup says he was a son of Nicholas & Ann (Slocum) Northup. Was this a clerk's error? I have a marriage for another Ann Slocum to Nicholas, William's older brother; but supposedly she died defore Remington would have been born. This puzzling entry needs more research.

William was a Drum Major in the RI troops in the Revolutionary War. His gravestone is inscribed "A hero of the Revolution."

There is a very interesting account of this family and some allied families in both RI & NY, titled "Biography of Henry Knowles Greene, Town of New Haven, NY" [http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyoswego/biographies/hgreene.html].

William married Ann Slocum 16 Aug 1761, Jamestown, RI. Ann (daughter of Samuel Slocum and Anne Gould) was born 25 May 1742, South Kingstown, RI; died 6 Dec 1831, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

William, of Nicholas & Freelove, deceased, of North Kingstown, married Ann Slocum, of Samuel & Ann, deceased, 16 Aug 1761, Jamestown.

    Children:
    1. Remington Northup, Sr. was born 1 Feb 1764, North Kingstown, RI; died 1829, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Nicholas Northup was born 20 Jan 1689/90 (son of Stephen Northup, Jr. and Mary Thomas); died Abt Oct 1765, North Kingstown, RI.

    Notes:

The will of Nicholas Northup of North Kingstown mentions his (probably third) wife Sarah, four unnamed daughters, and the following sons: William, Thomas, Gideon, Nicholas, and Rouse. I do not know which children were born of which wife.

Some genealogies have his first wife as Abigail Slocum or Abigail Eldred. I have not been able to confirm this, but have included her with some estimated dates, pending further research. If Nicholas was in fact married before he married Freelove, some of the children -- particularly Thomas -- may have been of this first marriage.

Nicholas married Freelove Eldred 23 Jun 1720, North Kingstown, RI. Freelove (daughter of Daniel Eldred and Mary Phillips) was born Abt 1700; died Between 1750 and 1761, North Kingstown, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Freelove Eldred was born Abt 1700 (daughter of Daniel Eldred and Mary Phillips); died Between 1750 and 1761, North Kingstown, RI.

    Notes:

In her mother's will, proved 24 Dec 1750 at North Kingstown, RI, Freelove is mentioned as the wife of Nicholas Northup of North Kingstown, Esq. It is not known exactly when this will was written, but I am assuming for the present that Freelove was still living in 1750, when her mother's will was proved.

    Notes:

Nicholas & Freelove were married by Rouse Helme, Justice of the Peace.

    Children:
    1. Thomas Northup was born Abt 1721.
    2. Abigail Northup was born Abt 1723.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Stephen Northup, Jr. was born Between 1656 and 1660, Providence, RI (son of Stephen Northup); died 12 May 1733, North Kingstown, RI.

    Notes:

According to the Northup-Hazard Family Bible, Stephen died at age 77. (see RI Roots magazine, Vol. 32. No. 4, Dec 2006)

Stephen's will mentions his wife Mary, and the following children: Thomas, Henry, Nicholas, Abigail (Watson), Mary (Watson), Mercy (Allen), & Patience (Hazard). If there were other children, they must have died before his will was written. For instance, some genealogies list a son Stephen, the oldest, in this family group.

The will also mentions some grandchildren, including three with the surname Card. So, either there was another daughter who had already died, or else one of the three daughters was previously married to a Mr. Card.

Stephen married Mary Thomas 11 Jul 1684, North Kingstown, RI. Mary was born Abt 19 May 1666; died 26 Dec 1754, North Kingstown, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Mary Thomas was born Abt 19 May 1666; died 26 Dec 1754, North Kingstown, RI.

    Notes:

Stephen's will mentions his wife's name, Mary. Her last name is found in the RI Genealogical Register (By A. G. Beaman), Vol. 3, No. 1, p. 53. It says she was "of Jamestown."

According to the Northup-Hazard Family Bible, Mary died at age 88y 7m 7d. (see RI Roots magazine, Vol. 32. No. 4, Dec 2006)

    Children:
    1. Stephen Northup, Jr. was born Abt 1685; died Bef Jun 1733.

    Notes:

He may have been a twin to John.

Daniel — Mary Phillips. Mary died Abt Dec 1750. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Mary Phillips died Abt Dec 1750.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Stephen Northup was born Abt 1634.

    Notes:

Notes extracted from RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 3, No. 1, pp. 73ff (in some places quoting Bates & Chatfield; other info from John O. Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of RI):

The first record of Stephen Northup in RI was on 2 Oct 1655 when the town meeting of Providence granted to him 25 acres of land. Also, on 27 August 1656, it was ordered that Stephen Northup have a home-lot laid out to him, bordering Christopher Smith's lot; also, that he have "commonage" equal to any other townsman; and that he be able to vote with the other townsmen. [This suggests he was at least age 21 by this time.]

John O. Austin states that Stephen Northup was made a freeman in 1658, but the above date seems more likely to be correct.

It is believed that Stephen's house and lot were at the north end of town, from the description in the deed. It was probably destroyed in King Philip's War.

On 27 July 1659, Stephen sold to William Carpenter 60 acres at Rocky Hill [possibly in the area of present-day Rt. 2 in East Greenwich/North Kingstown, near fairgrounds/flea market]. On 4 June 1660 he was elected Towne Sargeant at Providence. During his term of service, John Clawson, a Dutchman, was murdered by an Indian not far from Stephen's house. Stephen spent a day warning the inhabitants of the town about the prisoner, and four days in taking the prisoner to Newport and attending the trial there. For these services, Stephen received 3 shillings per day.

On 8 February 1662, Stephen Northup sold to William Hawkins all rights between the Pawtucket and Pawtuxet Rivers. On 28 March 1666 he witnessed a deed in Providence, but his name is not on a list of inhabitants who took the oath of allegiance to the king on 31 May 1666. He had probably already moved to "Kings Towne" by this date.

On 19 May 1671, Stephen Northup took the oath of allegiance at Kings Towne (per J. O. Austin). He bought land there sometime before 5 December 1679 (settlement of the Pettaquamscutt Purchase). His property consisted of about 120 acres near the present location of the Gilbert Stuart Homestead in Saunderstown.

It has been suggested that Stephen's wife may have been a daughter of Benjamin Harrington (see RIGR, Vol. 3, No. 1, p. 75; various reasons).

In August of 1672, Stephen Northup was summoned by the colony of CT to appear there in court concerning land in RI claimed by CT. Stephen refused to obey the summons, declaring his submission to the authorities in RI.

His name appears for the last time in the official records, when on 6 September 1687 he was taxed by Gov. Andros.

Samuel Eldred was at Cambridge, MA, in 1646; he was at Kingstown, RI, by 4 May 1668. On 22 June 1670 he took the constable's oath at Wickford. On 13 July 1670 he wrote from Wickford, RI, to Connecticut, asking for help in a murder case.

Samuel Eldred, Senior is on a list of taxes under Gov. Andros, dated 6 Sept 1687, assessing estates of the Towne of Rochester in the King's Province.

Samuel married Elizabeth Unknown 24 Nov 1640. Elizabeth was born Abt 1622, England. [Group Sheet]
