Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Ann Slocum was born 25 May 1742, South Kingstown, RI (daughter of Samuel Slocum and Anne Gould); died 6 Dec 1831, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY.

    Notes:

I am making an assumption that this marriage in Jamestown, for Ann Slocum, daughter of Samuel & Ann, puts the bride in this family group, even though I have not found a birth record for her as yet (needs more research).

Ann married William Northup 16 Aug 1761, Jamestown, RI. William (son of Nicholas Northup and Freelove Eldred) was born 8 Dec 1732, South Kingstown, RI; died Abt 21 May 1827, Newport, Herkimer Co., NY; was buried , Baptist Churchyard, Deerfield, Oneida, Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

William, of Nicholas & Freelove, deceased, of North Kingstown, married Ann Slocum, of Samuel & Ann, deceased, 16 Aug 1761, Jamestown.

    Children:
    1. Remington Northup, Sr. was born 1 Feb 1764, North Kingstown, RI; died 1829, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Samuel Slocum was born 9 Sep 1711 (son of Samuel Slocum and Hannah Carr); died Abt Feb 1775, Jamestown, RI.

    Notes:

    Exeter Land Evidence:
In 1741 Samuel Slocum of Jamestown and Ann his wife deeded two pieces of land to his "infant" brother Peleg of North Kingstown, one piece to brother Moses, and one piece to brother John. Probably "infant" means minor; otherwise, his father must have had a younger second wife. In any case, Peleg would have been born prior to 18 June 1741.

In 1753 Samuel Slocum of Jamestown, yeoman, and Hannah his wife sold two tracts of land to "John Raynolds."

From the location and content of these two items of land evidence, these two Samuels appear to be the same individual, although possibly the second deed could pertain to his parents, also Samuel & Hannah. I do not know when they died.

Samuel's will dated 16 January 1775 (if it is indeed his will) says he is "aged." It mentions no wife, but mentions a deceased brother Benjamin Slocum (according to a transcript of the will in the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 3 No. 3 p. 250). This is confusing because no genealogies I have consulted list a sibling Benjamin for this Samuel. However, I have added him (see note at Benjamin).

The will also mentions Samuel's children as follows: Samuel, Jr., of Jamestown; William, of Newport; Peleg; Abel; Sarah (Anrick?); Penelope; and Rhoda.

Samuel married Anne Gould 1733, North Kingstown, RI. Anne (daughter of John Gould and Elizabeth Gardiner) was born Abt 1713; died Bef Nov 1746. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Anne Gould was born Abt 1713 (daughter of John Gould and Elizabeth Gardiner); died Bef Nov 1746.

    Notes:

Samuel & Anne were married by George Thomas, Justice.

    Children:
    1. Avis Slocum was born 14 May 1734; died 22 May 1814.
    2. Samuel Slocum was born 11 Feb 1736/37.
    3. William Slocum was born Abt 1739.
    4. 1. Ann Slocum was born 25 May 1742, South Kingstown, RI; died 6 Dec 1831, Deerfield, Oneida Co., NY.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Samuel Slocum was born 2 Mar 1683/84, Jamestown, RI (son of Ebenezer SLOCUM and Mary THURSTON); died Bef 1748.

    Notes:

According to his father's will, Samuel was the eldest son, and had received land in Scituate.

Only two of Samuel's children, Ebenezer & Mary, were mentioned in the 1729 will of Samuel's mother, Mary (Thurston) Slocum.

Some online genealogies include two other children for Samuel: William & Maria.

Samuel married Hannah Carr Bef 22 Dec 1711. Hannah (daughter of Edward Carr and Hannah Stanton) was born 13 Oct 1691. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Hannah Carr was born 13 Oct 1691 (daughter of Edward Carr and Hannah Stanton).

    Notes:

Edward Carr's will of 22 Dec 1711 mentions his daughter, Hannah Slocum. I am making an educated guess that her husband was Samuel, who had a wife named Hannah. They were both from Jamestown, in the right time frame. Other online genealogies agree with this conclusion.

    2. 2. Samuel Slocum was born 9 Sep 1711; died Abt Feb 1775, Jamestown, RI.

Ebenezer & Mary settled in Jamestown, RI, where he was prominent in public office. He was chosen deputy to the General Assembly in 1679, a position which he held until his death in 1715. At times he was the Speaker of the Assembly. He belonged to the society of Friends, and was referred to as "a valuable minister."

The Jamestown Proprietors Records show that Ebenezer was chosen to be one of the Town Council ("Counsell"), and was chosen Moderator of meetings of the Proprietors and Freemen several times: 1682, 1683, 1684, 1685, 1697, 1699, and 1704. He was Head Warden in 1701.

Ebenezer married Mary THURSTON Abt 1676. Mary (daughter of Edward THURSTON and Elizabeth MOTT) was born Feb 1656/57, Newport, RI; died 16 Nov 1732, Jamestown, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Mary THURSTON was born Feb 1656/57, Newport, RI (daughter of Edward THURSTON and Elizabeth MOTT); died 16 Nov 1732, Jamestown, RI.

    Notes:

Her will was dated 5 Nov 1729, and proved Nov 1732. In addition to the family members listed, the spouses and children of two other daughters (names not given) are mentioned: son-in-law William Burling, and his children William, Rebecca, Benjamin, Hannah, Sarah, Ebenezer, and Amy; also, Thomas Rogers, another son-in-law, and his son Thomas Rogers.

  3. 10.  Edward Carr was born Between 1666 and 1667, Newport, RI (son of Governor Caleb Carr and Mercy Vaughn); died Jan 1711/12, Jamestown, RI.

Edward married Hannah Stanton 6 Oct 1686, Newport, RI. Hannah (daughter of John Stanton and Mary Horndell) was born Between 7 Sep and 7 Nov 1670, Newport, RI; died 1752. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Hannah Stanton was born Between 7 Sep and 7 Nov 1670, Newport, RI (daughter of John Stanton and Mary Horndell); died 1752.

    Notes:

Hannah is mentioned in the will of her maternal grandfather, John Horndell/Hordall.

The will of Hannah Carr, of Jamestown, widow, mentions sons Edward & James, both of Jamestown; and her five daughters as well as their husbands.

    Notes:

In the Jamestown marriage record, the year is no longer legible -- possibly 1690? It identifies Edward as "of Newport" and Hannah as "of James Towne." They were married "at Newport by W. C. Governour" (which is penned with a flourish).
