    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

Benedict was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. According to BSR, he lived in Newport and Smithfield, RI.

His place of birth, Jamestown, was obtained from the death record of his son John. His marriage record in 1780 identifies him as being of Smithfield, and son of John & Mary, of Jamestown.

In the Federal Census of 1800, "Benedic Remmington" is listed in the 2nd Parish at Mendon, Worcester Co., MA.

RI American of 21 Dec 1819, death notice: "Remington, Benedict, at Pawtuxet, in 64th yr." (Did he die at Mendon, MA, or Pawtuxet, RI? I think he probably died in Mendon, MA, and that the newspaper was in error -- needs more research to confirm.)

The Battey Family Papers give his date of death as 9 Dec 1819.

Benedict married Ruth Southwick 5 Oct 1780, Smithfield, RI. Ruth (daughter of Daniel Southwick, III and Ruth Mussey) was born 20 Mar 1755, Mendon, MA; died 10 Jun 1813, Mendon, MA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Ruth Southwick was born 20 Mar 1755, Mendon, MA (daughter of Daniel Southwick, III and Ruth Mussey); died 10 Jun 1813, Mendon, MA.

    Notes:

From Arnold's VRs: "REMINGTON Benedict, of Smithfield, son of John and Mary, of Jamestown, and Ruth Southwick, Jr., of Daniel and Ruth, of Mendon, 5d 10m 1780."

    Children:
    1. Hannah Remington was born 6 Nov 1782, Smithfield, RI; died 9 Jun 1862.

His middle name was probably Hull.

Tiddeman Remington witnessed the will of Joseph Mitchell, 11 May 1784 at Newport.

Although in the past I was not sure that Tiddeman belonged in this family group, Clemence (Remington) Cornell's family Bible record places Tiddeman in this family, along with his 7 siblings.

I first placed him here because of a number of factors. First of all, his Rev. War pension file states his date and location of birth, and they could place him here in this family. The file also has a reference to a John Remington of Jamestown, RI, although the relationship is not stated. Furthermore, the names of some of his children suggest a relationship to Gershom & Clemence Remington, parents of John. His own name suggests a relationship to Tiddeman Hull. There were at least three individuals with that name, and I believe all were descended from John Hull, Sr. & Alice Tiddeman. Perhaps his mother's maiden name was Hull, or even Tiddeman. There was a Mary Hull at Jamestown of the correct age to be his mother; she was a daughter of Tiddeman Hull b.1682. Lastly, Tiddeman H. Remington lived for a time in Mendon, MA, and Benedict Remington (who I suppose was his brother) also did. (This family needs more research.)

Tiddeman H. Remington enlisted in RI as a Private in the Revolution. (Pvt. RI PNSR)

His pension file is difficult to read. From what I can decipher, as of 1831/32 Tiddeman was "of Newport"; Sept 1832 he was of Mendon, MA, when he appeared in court at Newport; he went to MA as of 4 Mar 1838; had also lived in Brooklyn, MA, for 3 years. His truthfulness was sworn to by John Remington and Ebenezer Carr of Jamestown, RI.

Tiddeman was brought up in Jamestown, and moved to MA in 1822. In the 1830 Federal Census, Tiddeman is residing at Mendon, Worcester County, MA. It was there that he applied for a Revolutionary War Pension on 14 Sep 1832. The DAR Patriot Index says he died in 1843 in MA; the Mendon, MA, records say he died in 1842, no specific date, and that he was a Pensioner: "Tideman Remington died of Old age ____ 1842 Aged 88 years Husbandman & a pentioner."

From David Gips: "There is a death citation for Tiddeman Remington in the Massachusetts Spy (Worcester) 1 Mar 1843: 'In Mendon (Blackstone village) Feb 16th Mr. Tideman (sic) Remington, a Revolutionary pensioner, formerly of Jamestown, RI 83.' "

Tiddeman married Elizabeth Sheffield Abt 1786. Elizabeth was born Abt 1765; died 16 Aug 1838, Mendon, MA. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Elizabeth Sheffield was born Abt 1765; died 16 Aug 1838, Mendon, MA.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)
In the will of her sister, Hannah Sheffield, proved 8 Oct 1821 at North Kingstown, RI, Elizabeth is mentioned as the wife of Tiddeman Remington of Jamestown. Also mentioned is another sister Sarah, wife of Josiah Shove of Mendon, MA, as well as a deceased brother (name not readable) and three nieces, Mary, Elizabeth, & Hannah. There is no mention of a husband or children, so the implication is that Hannah is single.

The DAR Patriot Index, Centennial Edition, Part III, P-Z, p. 2435, identifies the wife of Tiddeman H. Remington as Elizabeth Sheffield.

Elsewhere it has been suggested that she was Elizabeth Anthony, probably because of Ann/Nancy's middle name.

    Children:
    1. Nancy "Ann" Anthony Remington was born 4 Feb 1787, Jamestown, RI; died Abt Aug 1821, Beaufort, SC; was buried , Tabernacle Baptist Church Cemetery.
    2. Mary H. Remington was born 6 Apr 1789, Jamestown, RI; died 9 Oct 1835.
    3. 3. Hannah S. Remington was born 14 Jan 1792, Jamestown, RI; died 27 Dec 1875, Blackstone, MA.
    4. Eunice Remington was born 30 May 1794, Jamestown, RI.
    5. Clemence C. Remington was born 16 Oct 1797, Jamestown, RI; died 3 Jun 1838, Savannah, GA; was buried 4 Jun 1838, Colonial Park Cemetery, Savannah, GA.
    6. Gershom Remington was born 16 Feb 1800, Jamestown, RI; died 28 Jul 1819, Charleston, SC.
    7. Henry Mumford Remington was born 3 Jul 1802, Jamestown, RI; died Abt Mar 1825, Mendon, MA.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  John Remington was born 7 Feb 1723/24, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI (son of Gershom Remington and Clemence Battey); died 15 Nov 1809, Newport, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

I am making an assumption that this John Remington belongs in this family group, solely based on the names and dates of his children. (But note: this needs further research. At the present time I can not see any other family in which he would fit.)

Some of John's descendants -- as far as can be determined -- are buried in the Blackstone Cemetery, Blackstone, MA. A stone there refers to John Remington 1680 - 1745. But if this John who married Mary is the son of John b1680, why do the names of his children reflect the ancestry of Gershom & Clemence?

BSR says he moved from Jamestown in 1756.

This note may pertain to this John Remington: Newport Mercury 30 Oct 1915, historical note from 31 Jul 1769 - "John Remington carries on shoe making for Elizabeth Mumford, wido, in New Lane."

BSR has his date of death as 06 December 1809.

John married Mary Unknown Abt 1748, Jamestown, RI. Mary was born Abt 9 Apr 1725; died 30 Mar 1808, Newport, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Mary Unknown was born Abt 9 Apr 1725; died 30 Mar 1808, Newport, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

I think it likely that she was the daughter of Tiddeman Hull b. 1690. He had a daughter Mary born 28 July 1720. (This needs more research to confirm.) A Battey manuscript suggests that Mary may have been a daughter of William & Jane Battey.

    Children:
    1. Jonathan Remington was born 10 Jul 1749, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died Jul 1787.
    2. Dinah Remington was born 10 May 1751, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.
    3. Catherine Remington was born 18 May 1754, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.
    4. 4. Benedict Remington was born 20 Apr 1756, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 10 Dec 1819, Mendon, MA.
    5. Mary Remington was born 26 Apr 1758, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.
    6. 6. Tiddeman H. Remington was born 9 Feb 1760, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died Between 1842 and 16 Feb 1843, Mendon, MA.
    7. Gershom Remington was born 28 Feb 1762, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 15 Jul 1790.
    8. Clemence Remington was born 16 Apr 1766, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 12 Jan 1838.

  3. 10.  Daniel Southwick, III was born 1721 (son of Daniel Southwick, II); died 11 Mar 1804.

    Notes:

Daniel was "of Mendon, MA" at the time of his daughter's marriage.

Daniel married Ruth Mussey Abt 2 Dec 1742, Smithfield, RI. Ruth (daughter of James Mussey and Judith Whitehouse) was born 18 Dec 1722, Capporpus, ME; died 16 Jan 1790. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Ruth Mussey was born 18 Dec 1722, Capporpus, ME (daughter of James Mussey and Judith Whitehouse); died 16 Jan 1790.

    Notes:

The birth record in the Battey family papers says Ruth was born 18th of 12 month 1722; that can mean either December or February, depending on the dating system used by the person who recorded (or copied) the dates. If it was copied from the original as is, it means February.

    Notes:

According to the Battey Family Papers, Daniel and Ruth were married on the 2nd 12m 1742. Depending on which month they observed as the first month (Jan, new style, or Mar, old style), this could mean they were married in either Feb or Dec.

    Children:
    1. David Southwick was born 27 Sep 1743, Mendon, MA; died 19 May 1746, Mendon, MA.
    2. Elisabeth Southwick was born 29 Mar 1746.
    3. Jane Southwick was born 14 Sep 1748, Mendon, MA; died 24 Jun 1772.

    5. 5. Ruth Southwick was born 20 Mar 1755, Mendon, MA; died 10 Jun 1813, Mendon, MA.
    6. Judith Southwick was born 23 Oct 1757, Mendon, MA; died 11 Feb 1837, Uxbridge, MA.
    7. Lydia Southwick was born 4 Feb 1761, Mendon, MA.
