  1. 1.  James A. Wellwood was born Abt 1812, NY (son of John Wellwood and Esther Tanner); died 1902.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1850, James G. & Sally Wellwood, ages 37 & 34, are living at Mexico, Oswego Co., NY. They have two children: Thompson R. 10 and John 6. Also with them is Joanna Remington, 40. Is she Sally's sister?

    J. A. & Sally Wellwood, ages 48 & 45, are living at Wellwood, Mexico, Oswego Co., NY, in the 1860 Federal Census. They have two children: John 16 & Emma 8. Esther Wellwood, age 72 RI, is living with them. She is probably James's mother.

In the 1880 Federal Census, James Wellwood, 70, is living with Edwin & Lucretia Griffin at Mexico, NY. (source: Biography of John Wellwood)

Here is some family history from the Oswego, NY, genweb site, which ties them to the Tanner, Sheldon, and Remington families of Rhode Island -- although the narrative doesn't easily line up with the will abstracts I have read: "Tanner purchased land in Westerly [RI] in 1693. He married 3 times. The last woman was Elizabeth Colgrave (?). They had 6 children. The oldest was Francis Tanner, who had 2 sons. The younger son was Joshua, born 27, 1757, in South Kingston, RI. He married Elizabeth Sheldon. They had 10 children. The sixth child was Esther Tanner who married John Wellwood.
"John and Esther did not arrive in Mexico until 1838. Their presence was noted by every major writer of Oswego County history. A section in South Mexico was called Wellwood. There were many family members. There was and is a Wellwood Cemetery. The Wellwood family participated in local life, both town and church, for close to 100 years but next to nothing certain remains about them. If it were not for the Wellwood area and the cemetery they would likely be forgotten.
"A major factor in losing this family was the lack of participation in the various census enumerations. Census takers skipped over this part of town in the early days. Not one Wellwood was counted in the 1840 0r 1850 Oswego County census. [My comment -- James Welwood and his family are in the 1850 Federal Census at Mexico, Oswego Co.] Later records seem incomplete with some persons hard to find because the recorder spelled their name as Welwood [sic]. Thus the family record now remains fragmentary . . .
"[In 1860] this family lived next door to the Remingtons, also a well-known group in the Wellwood area. The maiden name of Sally, J.A.

James married Sarah "Sally" Remington Abt 1838. Sarah (daughter of Benjamin Remington and Phebe Thompson) was born 28 May 1815, NY; died 1879; was buried , Wellwood Cemetery, South Mexico, Oswego Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

Joshua — Elizabeth Sheldon. Elizabeth was born Abt 1760. [Group Sheet]

  2. 7.  Elizabeth Sheldon was born Abt 1760.

    Notes:

I have roughly estimated Elizabeth's birth year. I have yet to discover who her parents were. She may very well have been related to Elizabeth Sheldon who married David Remington, Sr.

  1. 12.  Francis Tanner died Between 25 Oct 1776 and 13 Oct 1794.

    Notes:

A Francis Tanner is mentioned many times during the 1700s in the land records of Hopkinton and Exeter, RI, at least as early as 1733; one example is below. He also witnessed a number of wills, and appears to have been on the South Kingstown Town Council in 1740. Whether this is all the same individual, I am not sure. There was an earlier Francis Tanner, b c1660. This family needs more research.

Francis & Elisabeth Tanner of South Kingstown signed over land to John Tanner, Jr., of RI, on 1 Feb 1757.

Also, Francis Tanner is mentioned as "uncle" in the 25 Aug 1743 will of Mary Vilate, of South Kingstown, singlewoman.

The will of Francis Tanner, of Hopkinton, was dated 25 Oct 1776. It mentions his wife Elizabeth; sons Josias & Isaac (under 21), the two oldest; William, & Joshua; daughters Amy, Dorcas, & Susannah; and brothers Benjamin & Nathan.

For the present, I making an assumption that this is the Francis Tanner who was the father of Joshua who married Elizabeth Sheldon.

Francis — Elizabeth Unknown. Elizabeth died 1801. [Group Sheet]

  2. 13.  Elizabeth Unknown died 1801.

    Notes:

It mentions sons Josiah, Isaac, William, & Joshua; and daughters Dorcas (Hopkins) and Susannah (Brown). Witnesses were Susannah Sheldon, William Sheldon, Asa Sheldon, & Abel Tanner.
