Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Amey A. Remington was born 27 Feb 1837 (daughter of John P. Remington and Sarah Cordelia Murray); died 19 Oct 1920; was buried , Howard-Remington Lot, Warwick, RI.

Amey married John H. Ramsbottom 3 May 1859, RI. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  John P. Remington was born Abt 1798 (son of Peleg Remington, II and Phebe Field); died 30 Jun 1870, Warwick, RI; was buried , Howard-Remington Lot, Main Ave., Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Important note -- after tentatively placing John P. Remington in this family group, I came across additional information suggesting that he may not belong to this particular Peleg. Warwick records show the death of a John P. Remington on 30 June 1870, age 72, son of Peleg & Amy (Field) Remington. But was it this Peleg, or another one?

A descendant, Gail Gardiner, has supplied information that the Warwick records are incorrect in the name of Peleg's wife and John's mother; according to Gail, she was Amy Fifield, d/o Rev. Moses Fifield. If true, it is highly unlikely that she could have been confused with Phebe Field, as I had previously speculated. (The 1825 will of Freelove Field, wife of William and mother of Phebe, mentions two grandchildren -- Mary & John Remington. Based on that will, plus the marriage record of Phebe Field and Peleg Remington, and John's death record which mentions a father Peleg, I tentatively placed John P. here as that son John, pending further evidence.) This family definitely needs more research. In the meantime, I am leaving John P. Remington and his descendants here until I find which Peleg he belongs to.

According to "The History of Warwick" by Oliver Payson Fuller, p. 199, Rev. Moses Fifield was born 19 Dec 1790 in Unity, NH, and died 19 April 1859. So his daughter could not have been born before 1810 or so. Was there a previous generation that Gail was referring to?

John's will mentions his wife Sarah C., their children, and four grandchildren.

    In the Federal Census of 1850, the family is living at Warwick: John P. Remington 51, Sarah C. 39, Ellen M. 15, Amy A. 13, Adaline R. 10, and Florine F. 4.

John married Sarah Cordelia Murray Abt 1830. Sarah (daughter of Anthony Murray and Sally Unknown) was born 12 Aug 1811; died 3 Jan 1876, Warwick, RI; was buried , Howard-Remington Lot, Main Ave., Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Sarah Cordelia Murray was born 12 Aug 1811 (daughter of Anthony Murray and Sally Unknown); died 3 Jan 1876, Warwick, RI; was buried , Howard-Remington Lot, Main Ave., Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Her death record identifies her as Sarah Cordelia Remington, widow, and daughter of Anthony & Sally Murray.

    Children:
    1. John P. Remington, Jr. was born Abt 1831; died 10 Jan 1847.
    2. Ellen M. Remington was born 1834; died 1865; was buried , Brayton Cemetery, Apponaug, Warwick, RI.
    3. 1. Amey A. Remington was born 27 Feb 1837; died 19 Oct 1920; was buried , Howard-Remington Lot, Warwick, RI.
    4. Adeline C. Remington was born 1842, RI; died 1931; was buried , William J. Cole Lot, Main Ave., Warwick, RI.
    5. Florence F. Remington was born Abt 1848, RI.
    6. Mary J. A. Remington was born 25 Dec 1850; died 24 Oct 1892; was buried , Howard-Remington Lot, Main Ave., Warwick, RI.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Peleg Remington, II was born 22 Apr 1764 (son of Peleg Remington, I and Waite Rhodes); died Between 17 Jan and Apr 1838, Pawtuxet, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Some genealogies have his death month as January, while others say April. The gravestone says April; however, since this was his birth month, it could be a mistake. The age at death supports January as the birth month.

From the records of the First Baptist Church of Providence, RI: Peleg Remington June 27, 1805, E (experience?) Nov. 16, 1806, L (letter?) To Pawtuxet church. (This may or may not have been this particular Peleg)

Peleg may have had a wife named Amy Field between Sally (Unknown) and Mary Tower. Warwick Deaths, Vol. I (at Warwick City Hall) records the death of a John P. Remington on 30 June 1870, age 72, son of Peleg Remington & Amy Field. She may have died in childbirth, after which Peleg married Mary Tower in 1799. I have not been able to discover another Peleg of this time period who could have been the father of John P., but certainly there may have been one (needs more research).

There is also a marriage recorded at Providence's West Side Church: Peleg Remington & Phebe Field, of William, 24 May 1795. This, of course, adds to the confusion, suggesting that perhaps a clerk or informant wrote Amy instead of Phebe in the Warwick death record, as the mother of John P. However, it may have been another Peleg who married Phebe Field, as the Providence Phenix reported the death of a Mrs. Phebe Remington in her 46th year, 4 Feb 1822, at Cranston.

The RI Cemetery Database has his year of birth as c. 1765; Red MacDougall's online family tree at [redfish@netrevolution.com] and at Rootsweb's Worldconnect shows his date of birth as 22 April 1764 (in Pawtuxet); the Roger Williams book says about 1760.

Please read the notes for his four possible (?) wives. This needs further research.

It was not unheard of for a man to be married four times. Benjamin Remington of Cowesett had four wives, and his brother Jonathan (my ancestor) had three. No doubt there are many other examples.

He may be the Peleg Remington who signed a petition to establish a Masonic Lodge at Pawtuxet, 26 Apr 1805, at Col. Bowen's house.

He was probably the Peleg Remington who was a witness in a US Supreme Court case in 1807, Smith v. Carrington:
    http://supreme.justia.com/us/8/62/case.html

Peleg married Phebe Field 24 May 1795, Providence, RI. Phebe (daughter of William Field, I and Freelove Unknown) was born Abt 1775; died Abt 1798. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Phebe Field was born Abt 1775 (daughter of William Field, I and Freelove Unknown); died Abt 1798.

    Notes:

If she is the Mrs. Phebe Remington who died in Cranston 4 Feb 1822, then she can not be the wife of this Peleg, because he was married to Mary Tower during this time.

I have found a marriage reference for Peleg Remington to Phebe Field, daughter of William. In the 19 Dec 1825 will of Freelove Field (widow of William), she mentions two grandchildren: John & Mary Remington. However, what complicates this is that in the death records at Warwick, the entry for the death of John P. Remington says he was son of Peleg Remington & Amy Field. Is it possible that the informant at John's death got the name wrong? Are they two names for the same woman? Or, did Peleg marry two sisters? While this is certainly possible, I already have found three other wives for him, and it seems difficult to fit two additional wives into his life. One does nicely, between his other three marriages.

(A Benjamin Remington, brother of my ancestor Jonathan, had four wives. Jonathan had three, before he died at age 50. In an era of widespread tuberculosis and frequent death in childbirth, this was not unusual.)

I have estimated Phebe's year of birth based on her parents' ages and the birth years of her siblings. I have also made an assumption that she died around the time of the birth of her second child. However, this may be incorrect. Perhaps Phebe married a different Peleg Remington, s/o "Unknown" Remington. The Providence Phenix reported the death of a Mrs. Phebe Remington in her 46th year, at Cranston, 4 Feb 1822.

In any case, I am placing Phebe here with this Peleg for the time being, pending further research. Also, her two children mentioned in their grandmother's will are here, although the son John may not be John P. Remington of Warwick, whose family is also placed here.

    Notes:

Marriage recorded at Providence's West Side Church: Peleg Remington & Phebe Field, of William, 24 May 1795.

    Children:
    1. Mary Remington was born Abt 1796.
    2. 2. John P. Remington was born Abt 1798; died 30 Jun 1870, Warwick, RI; was buried , Howard-Remington Lot, Main Ave., Warwick, RI.

  3. 6.  Anthony Murray

Anthony — Sally Unknown. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Sally Unknown
    Children:
    1. 3. Sarah Cordelia Murray was born 12 Aug 1811; died 3 Jan 1876, Warwick, RI; was buried , Howard-Remington Lot, Main Ave., Warwick, RI.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Peleg Remington, I was born 9 May 1736, Warwick, RI (son of Stephen Remington and Lydia Rhodes); died 9 Jun 1776, At sea; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

"Descendants of Roger Williams" Book I, p. 153 says Peleg was lost at sea in 1776. There is a single gravestone in Pawtuxet Cemetery (WK #3) for him and his wife Waite Remington. This has been photographed for my collection.

Information from Richard Allen Brownell, Sr.:
Peleg's specific dates of birth and death were received in an email from Mr. Brownell.
Peleg Remington was captain of a vessel in the Maritime Service and took the Oath of Allegiance to the Colonies in 1775.

He is likely one of the two Peleg Remingtons listed for Warwick in the 1774 RI Census.

A typewritten Remington genealogy given to Mrs. Dorothy White of the Roger Williams Family Association shows Peleg as a son of Stephen Remington & Lydia Rhodes. No specific documentation is provided.

A note in the papers of the Mary E. Rice Collection, excerpted from a copy of a letter written by Mrs. Rice to Virginia Adair, a descendant of Peleg Remington: "Dear Mrs. Adair, I have found that Peleg Remington is the son of Stephen & (guess what) a Lydia Rhodes. I will continue to check this . . . "

Peleg married Waite Rhodes 10 Jul 1757, Cranston, RI. Waite (daughter of Charles Rhodes and Deborah Greene) was born 25 Aug 1740, Warwick, RI; died 25 Oct 1810, Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Waite Rhodes was born 25 Aug 1740, Warwick, RI (daughter of Charles Rhodes and Deborah Greene); died 25 Oct 1810, Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

I have estimated the birth years of some of the children, based on their dates of marriage.

    Notes:

Peleg & Waite were married by Joseph Harris, Justice. A copy of the official marriage record is among the papers in the Mary E. Rice Collection.

I have estimated the birth years of some of the children. Russell is not found in most of the genealogies, but is in a family Bible record. Also, it is said that Charles had a twin named Deborah -- she must have died in infancy. I have no further information on either Russell or Deborah.

    Children:
