Benjamin F. Remington

He may be the Benjamin Remington, Jr., of Savoy who on 16 Apr 1836 had his name legally changed to Benjamin Franklin Remington. (I believe this is correct because he is named as Benj F. in his son Henry's marriage record.) It should be noted that John Remington of nearby North Adams, MA, also had a son named Benjamin Franklin Remington b1799.

This Ben, Jr., may also be the Benjamin Franklin Remington who served the Baptist church in Savoy, as well as several others in Franklin County, as a Baptist minister from 1820 to 1855 (see p. 17 of the Remington genealogy compiled by Lois Remington Smith).

For the present time, I am making an assumption that the census data for Benjamin & Lydia Remington, living in Savoy, MA, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses pertains to this particular Benjamin. In 1850 it appears that this family is living near Aaron & James Remington and their families, and their father Benjamin. It makes sense that this is their brother. The dates match, also.

In 1850 Benjamin Remington is 50 and Lydia is 48. They have four children: Andrew 18, Ellen 16, Emma 13, & Franklin 10. I think their ages may not be precise, based on other evidence.

In 1860 Benjamin F. Remington is 60 and Lydia is 57. Son Franklin B. is with them, age 15; as well as Martha J. Cowen, 34, tailoress.

Note: Other than the four children found in the 1850 census, the names and dates for these children came from Pat Boyden's Remington genealogy, and have not as yet been verified by me.

Benjamin married Lydia Rice 21 Apr 1822, Savoy, Berkshire, MA. Lydia (daughter of Daniel Rice and Sarah Brown) was born 8 Jun 1803, Conway, Franklin Co., MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1860. [Group Sheet]

2. Sylvia Rice Remington was born 28 Apr 1824, Savoy, Berkshire Co, MA.
3. Martha Jane Remington was born 18 Aug 1825, Savoy, Berkshire Co, MA.
4. George Washington Remington was born 28 Jun 1827, Savoy, Berkshire Co, MA.
5. Andrew Jackson Remington was born 29 Nov 1832, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.
6. Lydia Marie Remington was born 23 Sep 1834, Savoy, Berkshire Co, MA.
7. Eliza Ellen Remington was born 9 May 1836, Savoy, Berkshire Co, MA; died 24 Feb 1925.
8. Alvira Augusta Remington was born 4 Dec 1837, Savoy, Berkshire Co, MA; died 26 Jan 1846.
9. Emma Adelaide "Addie" Remington was born 1 Mar 1841, Savoy, Berkshire Co, MA; died 21 Mar 1893.
10. Franklin Benjamin "Frank" Remington was born 12 Oct 1844, Savoy, Berkshire Co, MA; died 11 Sep 1880; was buried , Brookside Cemetery, South Deerfield, MA.

Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin is age 88 and living with his son Aaron and family in Savoy, Berkshire, MA. Next door is his son James and family. (Probable) son Benjamin and his family are nearby, too.

According to Boyd Scott Remington's chart, Ben's parents lived in Cummington, MA. That is why I think his wife is Sarah Seamans, based on the marriage data. Otherwise, she married a different Benj. Remington.

The death record at Savoy, MA, says Mr. Benjamin Remington died of old age at 94y 4m 9d.

Benjamin married Sarah "Sally" Seamans 14 Feb 1793, Adams, MA. Sarah (daughter of Aaron Seamans and Lillis Unknown) was born 25 Feb 1766, Rehoboth, MA; died 29 Dec 1827. [Group Sheet]

Sarah may have been born in Rehoboth, MA (?). At the time of her marriage, she was of Adams, MA.

The marriage intention spells her maiden name as Symonds.

Joshua Remington, Sr. was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

The family moved from Abington, MA, to Cummington, MA, sometime between 1772 and 1776. Joshua's three lots in northwest Cummington are in the area known as Remington's Hill (also called Bryant Mt., after the poet William Cullen Bryant who was born in Cummington).

In 1780 there was a controversy concerning Joshua Remington in the local church, in which his name appears in the church records quite a bit. Among other accusations was that he was causing schisms in the church by his charges against the pastor.

Joshua and family are in the 1800 census, but not the 1810. His son Benjamin was appointed Administrator of Joshua's estate on 15 Oct 1811 (Probate records of Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA).

Lois Remington Smith has noted his date of death as Sep 1811.

Joshua married Ruth Clay Abt 1754. Ruth was born Abt 1734; died Aft 1800. [Group Sheet]

I have roughly estimated her year of birth as c1690.

The Remington Ancestry Chart by Boyd Scott Remington has the date of marriage as 13 June 1710, and location as Kittery, Maine. Unfortunately, no source is noted. The online genealogy of Ann M. Mcallister (at genealogy.com) has their marriage on 13 June 1712 at Old Eliot (now Kittery), Maine, as does the Remington genealogy compiled by Lois Remington Smith.
