  1. 1.  Lalla G. Remington was born 5 Aug 1874, GA (daughter of William Aborn Remington and Mary Eliza Matthias); died Aft 8 Aug 1943.

    Notes:

Lalla West wrote to my grandmother Laura (Chafee) Remington at least twice in 1943, after the death of my uncle Russel Remington in World War II. Lalla, who was living in La Grange, Illinois, had seen his name on the list of the war dead, and wrote to "Family of Russel P. Remington" in East Greenwich, RI. Lalla was very interested in Remington family connections. She said she was proud of the many Remington boys serving our country, and urged my grandmother to get comfort and strength from her Bible.

Lalla says "I have long been a D.A.R."

From handwritten notes of Virginia Adair: "As a child my grandmother, born in 1874, the daughter of William Aborn Remington, used to visit her widowed grandmother, Sally Anne Arnold Remington, in RI. As she had two Arnold lines back to William Arnold I have lots of Arnold material -- even the old Sion Arnold Bible. I only wish I had questioned her and my mother about the early Remingtons!!"

    From the Georgia Genwen site:
Garnett Lee West born Homer, GA, May 17, 1868 Married June 23, 1891 Lalla Rook Remington born Aug 5, 1874 Dau. Of Wm. Aborn Remington

[http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/bibles/w2300001.txt] -- from the John B. & Andrew Jackson West Bible Record

I believe that Lalla's middle name was Grady, named after her mother's paternal grandmother's maiden name. (see Rootsweb's Worldconnect)

Lalla married Garnett Lee West 23 Jun 1891. Garnett (son of Andrew Jackson West and Leah King Osborn) was born 17 May 1868, Homer, GA; died Abt 1939. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. Maud King West was born Abt 1893, GA.
    2. Thelma Remington West was born Abt 1895, GA.
    3. Edith Woodfin West was born Abt 1898, GA.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  William Aborn Remington was born 8 Apr 1828, Pawtuxet, RI (son of Henry Adolphus Remington and Sarah "Sally" Ann Arnold); died 21 Jun 1895, Atlanta, GA.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, William is age 23, living in Warwick, RI, with his parents and siblings. He is a miner. William married in 1851, subsequently went south to Georgia, but presumably returned by the time his first wife Chloe died in 1856. After this he went back to Georgia, where he can be found in later censuses.

In a deed dated 13 Nov 1853 at Warwick, William A. Remington was said to be "of Marietta in the State of Georgia." Henry A. & Sally Ann Remington are also named in this deed.

William was widowed, probably twice. In the 1860 Federal Census, living at Marietta, Cobb Co., GA, in the household of G. T. Northup & family, are the following: W. A. Remington, 33 b. NJ, a carpenter; F. J. Remington, 24 b. NY (next to name it says William -- perhaps meaning his wife?); and Ella Remington, 1 b. GA. This is almost certainly William Aborn Remington of RI (see census data for 1870).

In the 1870 Federal Census, there is a William A. Remington, age 42, b. RI, living at Cartersville, Bartow, GA. This is the correct age for William Aborn Remington. Also in the home are Ellen L. Remington, 11; William H. Remington, 9; and George T. Remington, 5; these three children were all born in Georgia. He has no wife in the home, so it is reasonable to assume that his wife, mother of these children, has died. They are living next to or near to Simeon & Hester Smith and family.

In the 1880 Federal Census, William & Mary (assumed third wife) and their family are residing at 3rd Ward, District 13, Athens, Clarke Co., GA; W. A. Remington is 50, Mary E. is 36, Earnest W. is 7, and Lola G. is 5.

It is possible that William had another daughter named Marietta, because back in RI, the 1870 Federal Census lists a Marrietta Remington, age 14, b. GA (c1856), living in Providence with William's parents, Henry & Sally Remington. She could be the daughter of Chloe, because they must have gone to Georgia and then back to Massachusetts, where Chloe's death is in the Rehoboth, MA, vital records. This is one possible scenario. (see above note concerning deed dated 13 Nov 1853)

However, the RI Death Index lists a daughter of William & Chloe who would have been born c1856 -- Carrie C. Remington, who died 31 Mar 1876. The name Carrie does not sound at all like Marietta, so it is not certain that they are the same individual -- unless she was called by very different names at times.

From the web site newenglandancestors.org -- see "Rehoboth, MA, vital records": "1851 REMINGTON, William A., aged 23, of Providence, son of H. A. and Sally A., and Chloe Carpenter, aged 20, of Rehoboth, daughter of Asaph and Caroline, married by Rev. Charles P. Grosvenor June 8, 1851. Int. June 8, 1851. 8 6 Marriage." (This is very likely the first marriage for this particular William.)

    "1856 REMINGTON - , of William and Chloe, 1 day, Nov. 11, 1856 8 14 Death"

    "1856 REMINGTON Chloe, wife of William A., 26y 1m 9d, Dec. 24, 1856 8 15 Death"

See DAR Founders & Patriots Line # 4617.

William married Mary Eliza Matthias 22 Aug 1871, Cass Station, Cass Co., GA. Mary was born 23 Jun 1844, Henderson Co., NC; died 28 Aug 1895, Hot Springs, AR. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Mary Eliza Matthias was born 23 Jun 1844, Henderson Co., NC; died 28 Aug 1895, Hot Springs, AR.
    Children:
    1. Earnest W. Remington was born Between 1872 and 1873, GA; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.
    2. 1. Lalla G. Remington was born 5 Aug 1874, GA; died Aft 8 Aug 1943.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Henry Adolphus Remington was born 25 Dec 1803, Pawtuxet, RI (son of Charles Remington and Mary "Polly" C. Smith); died 11 Nov 1870, Providence, RI; was buried , Sion Arnold Lot, Richottes Ct., West Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Henry served as a cabinet maker's apprentice under Robert Niles. He later engaged in agricultural pursuits and became a prosperous farmer.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Henry A., 46, & Sally A., 47, are living in Warwick, RI. Their children in the home are: Charles, 24, a clerk; William A., 23, a miner; Horatio A., 21, a machinist; Henry A., 16; Sarah A., 12; and Phebe A., 10.

In the 1870 Federal Census, the family is in Providence, RI. Henry A. is age 66, "Sallie" A. is 66, Sarah A. is 33, and Phebe A. is 29. Also in the household is Marrietta Remington, 14, b.c. 1856 in Georgia. Could she be a daughter of William Aborn Remington from one of his marriages? (needs research) In a deed dated 13 Nov 1853 at Warwick, William A. Remington was said to be "of Marietta in the State of Georgia."

Henry's death record identifies him as "son of Charles."

Notes from the Mary E. Rice Collection, concerning Cranston land evidence, deed 19-435: Henry A. Remington & Sarah Ann Remington of Warwick, RI, sold land to Maria F. Condy of Cranston, RI, wife of Samuel A. Condy. This property had previously been sold to Charles Remington by Ezra Dean. (Maria is a sister of Henry.)

Warwick land evidence, bk. 9 p. 366, in re: Sion Arnold, Henry A. Remington, etc.; this document says that Henry A. Remington is "guardian of persons & Estates of Phebe Remington, Sarah Remington, & Henry Remington infants under the age of 21 years, being heirs of Sion Arnold together with the said Horatio A., Charles, and one William A. Remington . . the said Sally Ann Remington, their mother." It was signed 15 July 1853 by Charles Remington, Henry A. Remington, Sally A. Remington, Horatio A. Remington, & Martha A. Remington (w/o Horatio).

Henry married Sarah "Sally" Ann Arnold 22 Dec 1825, Coventry, RI. Sarah (daughter of Sion Arnold and Phebe Arnold) was born 5 Oct 1803, Scituate, RI; died 22 Feb 1893, Providence, RI; was buried , Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Sarah "Sally" Ann Arnold was born 5 Oct 1803, Scituate, RI (daughter of Sion Arnold and Phebe Arnold); died 22 Feb 1893, Providence, RI; was buried , Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

Henry and Sally had 8 children born in the Remington homestead at Pawtuxet, built by Charles, son of Peleg.

    Children:
    1. Charles Remington was born 15 Dec 1826, Pawtuxet, RI; died 30 Dec 1904, RI.
    2. 2. William Aborn Remington was born 8 Apr 1828, Pawtuxet, RI; died 21 Jun 1895, Atlanta, GA.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Charles Remington was born 1772 (son of Peleg Remington, I and Waite Rhodes); died 8 Jan 1810, Sierre Leone, Africa; was buried , Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Harrison St., Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

From Cranston Land Evidence 7-19, dated 25 Sept 1802: Charles Remington of Cranston, mariner, sold property to James Rhodes, merchant, for $750. The transaction included "one lot of land in Cranston in part called Pawtuxet." It was "bounded westerly on Main St., northerly by land of Remington Sheldon, and southerly on said Sheldon." This was sold "together with dwelling house -- barn & buildings -- was purchased by me of Rhodes Greene in April 1786" (should be 1796 -- note by Mary E. Rice) . . . "I, the said Polly Remington, wife of said Charles Remington, releases dower." (sic) This was signed by Charles Remington & Mary Remington, and witnessed by John A. Aborn & Patience Smith.

On a tombstone erected in memory of Capt. Charles Remington and his two sons is the following inscription: "Tho locked in deathly embrace on foreign shores, and pitying strangers closed their eyes. To mourn their sad and early loss is ours. While fair in Memories page, thy virtues rise. The dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. To Captain Charles Remington and his two sons Stephen and Charles. John 5-25."

According to descendant Virginia Adair, now deceased, late of Altanta, GA, Charles was named after his grandfather Charles Rhodes. A letter from her states that family tradition "always listed" Charles as a son of Peleg. Also, she refers to some notes of Charles W. Farnham, RI genealogist of past decades, who listed Charles among the children of Peleg & Waite -- but no source noted. There is also reference to a twin named Deborah -- but I have no other information on her. Mrs. Adair also said she had two property deeds recording land transaction between Charles and his brother Peleg, although their relationship is not stated in the documents.

Charles is mentioned as a son of Peleg in an article on Henry Adolphus Remington, Jr., published in "Club and Professional Life in Rhode Island" dated 1895. A copy of this was given to me by Mrs. Dorothy White of the Roger Williams Family Association. The copy has a notation on the front: R. I. Coll. H32?24, R5, C42, v. 21, no. 21 (difficult to read these numbers and letters).

The book "History of Washington and Kent Counties," p. 1296, says Charles Remington came from England, and that he died in 1812. I believe it is incorrect in this information. While interesting and informative reading, the book does have numerous errors.

From a letter to my grandmother from Lalla Remington West, Charles's great-granddaughter: "Captain charles Remington was a sea captain and had his own sailing vessel, and made trips to Africa and China -- went around South America to get to China. He died on one of his trips to Africa and is buried in Sierra Leone, Africa . . . His father Peleg R also died at sea as he was a sea captain, too."

Charles married Mary "Polly" C. Smith 1793. Mary (daughter of Stephen Smith, Jr. and Patience Arnold) was born 6 Nov 1770; died 6 Nov 1842; was buried , Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Harrison St., Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Mary "Polly" C. Smith was born 6 Nov 1770 (daughter of Stephen Smith, Jr. and Patience Arnold); died 6 Nov 1842; was buried , Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Harrison St., Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

    Mary was known as Polly.

Again, on 4 Dec 1805, a Cranston deed includes the following: "I, Mary or Polly Remington, wife of the above named Charles Remington, releases dower." It was signed by Charles and Polly Remington.

From the records of the First Baptist Church of Providence, RI: Mrs. Mary Remington (date of membership or baptism?) Not known Nov. 16, 1806, L (letter?) to Pawtuxet church. W. of Charles.

Notes from the Mary E. Rice Collection, concerning Cranston Land Evidence, deed bk #1 pp. 584 & 585, dated 17 Oct 1825: Mary C. Remington, widow of Charles, deceased late of said Cranston, mariner, and William Henry Aborn of Providence, merchant, and his wife Harriot Angeline Aborn . . . " The content concerned the release of all debts pertaining to the estate of Charles, also a release to Samuel Aborn Condy and wife Maria Frances. (Maria & Harriet were sisters, and daughters of Charles & Mary)

The announcement of her death said she died "after 4 yrs. 6 mos. suffering."

Her gravestone has this saying: [she died] "after 4 years and 6 months of suffering which she endured with calm resignation and solid hope of Heaven."

The 2003 supplement to the book "Descendants of Roger Williams, Waterman and Winsor Lines" has her date of birth as 6 November 1776. Depending on whether she was born in 1770 or 1776, determines which of Stephen's wives was her mother. She did have a granddaughter named Phebe, but whether this is a clue that her mother was Phebe is debatable.
