  1. 1.  Martha Ellen "Nellie" Remington was born 10 Jul 1844, Cranston, RI (daughter of Stacy Waterman Remington and Ruth Johnson); died 25 Sep 1910; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Elmwood Ave., Providence, RI.

    Notes:

She is Ellen in 1850 & 1860, but Nellie in 1870. However, she seems to be Martha H. (Remington) Fry in 1880, when she is married, has a daughter, and her father Stacy is living with them. For Stacy, the census says his relationship to the head of household is grandfather, but that is not likely, because Martha's husband "Frank" was born c1841, and Stacy is in the age range to be his father or father-in-law.

Martha married Frederick "Frank" Augustus Fry 8 Jun 1871, RI. Frederick was born Oct 1841, Tariffville, CT; died 12 Apr 1906, Bristol, RI; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Elmwood Ave., Providence, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. Carrie M. Fry was born Abt 1874, RI.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Stacy Waterman Remington was born 21 Oct 1809, Utica, Oneida Co., NY (son of Charles Remington and Alice Unknown); died 27 Nov 1884, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

At the time of his marriage in 1832, Stacy was "of Providence."

Stacey W. Remington is in the Providence City Directory of 1836/37 as a cigar maker, 155 High St.

Stacy W. Remington witnessed the Warwick will of Desire Burton, singlewoman, formerly of Cranston, on 1 Sept 1853. The two other witnesses were Joshua A. Johnson and Joseph G. Johnson. These were both brothers-in-law to Stacy.

In 1850, 1860, & 1870 the family is living at Cranston, RI. In the 1850 Federal Census, Stacy's father-in-law, Freeborn Johnson, age 78, is living with them. Also in the household is Catherine B. Smith, age 18.

In 1870, although the census was to be as of June 1st, the census was taken on July 11th, shortly after Joseph had gotten married on June 16th. The Hart family is living next door, and Joseph & Josephine are each shown in his/her own parents' home, although Josephine is called Josephine Remington.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Stacy is aged 70, widowed, a retired farmer, living with grandson Frank A. Fry and family at 31 Broad St., Providence, RI.

The identity of Stacy's parents, noted in his death record (although not in the RI Death Index), was provided by Linda Mathew, who has researched the Johnsons extensively. According to census data, both of Stacy's parents were born in Rhode Island, so apparently they or their parents migrated to New York State, where Stacy was born. Interestingly, in the 1880 Federal Census, Stacy is living on Broad St., not far from Benjamin W. Remington. However, Ben was born in RI. Is there a close family relationship between these two, or is it just coincidence?

I was able to link him to our family tree through the marriage of his daughter Caroline, and more recently through his wife's family, the Johnsons. I am sure there are other links, also -- such as through the Burlingames.

Stacy's will is dated 19 May 1884. His son-in-law Thomas H. Rhodes is named as Trustee of the estate.

I have not been able to determine why he was named Stacy Waterman Remington, or if there is a family connection to Stacy Waterman born 22 Feb 1791.

Stacy married Ruth Johnson Abt Nov 1832, Providence, RI. Ruth (daughter of Freeborn Johnson and Martha Allen) was born 22 Jul 1809, West Greenwich, RI; died 28 Apr 1871, Cranston, RI; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Providence, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Ruth Johnson was born 22 Jul 1809, West Greenwich, RI (daughter of Freeborn Johnson and Martha Allen); died 28 Apr 1871, Cranston, RI; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

At the time of her marriage in 1832, Ruth was "of Coventry."

The RI Death Index says she was a daughter of Freeborn & Ruth (not Martha) Johnson.

Joseph's will dated 8 Sep 1808 at Coventry, mentions his wife, Anna; sons Samuel, William, Esek, Peleg, Pardon, Christopher, Freeborn, & Lawton; and daughters Naomi Capwell & Marcy Johnson.
