Edith Slack

Notes:

In 1891 the family is living at 19 Rookery, Mansfield. Also nearby on the same street are Gilbert & Hannah Slack and their family. I suspect that these two men, James & Gilbert, are brothers, the sons of Samuel & Eliza, because this couple had two sons of these names which fit their ages in the census. However, since there were several Gilberts born at Mansfield within a few years of each other, I can not be certain.

Also on the street is a Hannah Slack, widow, age 74, a seamstress. I am not sure who she is.

James married Jane Unknown Abt 1867. Jane was born Abt 1846, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England; died Aft Apr 1891. [Group Sheet]

In the 1851 census, Samuel and Eliza, ages 30 and 28, are living at 10 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. They have four children: Harriett 9, Elizabeth 7, James 5, and Gilbert 2 wks. Samuel is a cotton stockinger and Eliza is a seamer.

Samuel married Eliza Elizabeth Unknown Abt 1841. Eliza was born Abt 1823; died Aft Apr 1851. [Group Sheet]

According to the church record, Gilbert was born on Tuesday, 8th Apr 1777, and baptized on aThursday, 11th July 1777.

(Note from Alan Battams: For all their children christened up to 1817, father Gilbert was a stockinger, mother Elizabeth, of Stockwell Gate. For children after 1817, father Gilbert was a stockinger, mother Elizabeth, of Bancroft Lane.)

In the 1841 census, Gilbert & Elizabeth are living at 10 Bancroft Lane. Also in the household are sons Robert & Samuel, as well as Robert's wife Ann and their five children: George, Robert, Harriet, Edward, & Charles. Nearby, at 11 & 12 Bancroft, are living two other sons, John & Gilbert, and their families.

In 1851, Gilbert is not there but Elizabeth Slack is age 73, still on Bancroft Lane, a pauper/winder.

In the 1813 Rate Book for Mansfield, p. 62, a Gilbert Slack living in Ratcliffe Gate paid 1/10 - 1/2 pence (one shilling ten and a half pence). The reference could refer to this particular Gilbert, our ancestor.

Gilbert married Elizabeth BLEAR 20 Apr 1797, St. Peter's, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. Elizabeth was born Abt 1776, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England; died Aft Apr 1851. [Group Sheet]

In the 1851 census, Elizabeth Slack is age 73, still on Bancroft Lane, a pauper/winder. With her is son William Slack and his wife Ann and family.

Gilbert Slack (signed) of this parish aged 20 bach and Elizabeth Blear (made mark) aged 20 spinster married in this church by banns on 20th April 1797 by John Durham Vicar in the presence of Richard Endersby and Josh Lockwood (he was probably the parish clerk).
