    In the 1870 Federal Census, Benjamin B. Manchester is age 33, living at Providence. His birthplace is given as MA. His mother Lucy, age 74, is with him, as well as William A. & Amey Manchester, ages 24 & 21, both b RI. William A. Manchester is the son of Benjamin's half-brother William Ellery Manchester.

  1. 2.  Ellery Manchester was born 13 Jun 1779, Tiverton, RI (son of Philip Manchester and Eliphal Cory); died Between 1 Jun 1850 and 1860.

    Notes:

    At a legal meeting of the Wesport, MA, town council, [held May 12,1817 in the Town House], Ellery Manchester was appointed one of nine fence viewers for the town.

    In the 1850 Federal Census at Westport, MA, Ellery is 68 and his wife Lucy is 54. Their son Benjamin is 12. The family is next to Peleg & Abigail Manchester; Peleg is probably a cousin.

    In James Arnold's Vital Record of RI, Ellery's birth year is transcribed as 1799; however, in birth order it should be 1779.

    Ellery married Lucy Richmond Abt 1836. Lucy was born Abt 1796, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1870. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    In the 1860 Federal Census, Lucy Manchester is age 64, living at North Providence, RI, with her son, Benjamin B. Manchester, age 22, a grocer.

    In the 1870 Federal Census, Lucy Manchester is age 74, living at Providence, RI, with her son, Benjamin B. Manchester, age 33. Also there is her step-grandson William A. Manchester and his wife Amey.

    It appears that John remarried only two months after his first wife's death.
