Benjamin Manchester

Benjamin's death record at Fall River, MA, identifies his parents as John & Mary (m n Brayton); it gives both his and their birthplace as Tiverton, RI. Benjamin died at 12:30 pm on 10 Jan 1864, aged 76 y 4 m 23 d.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin & Lucy A. Manchester, ages 60 & 56, are living at Tiverton, Newport Co., RI. Also in the household are the following individuals: Delana Dunlap 30 RI, Mary A. Manchester 23 MA, Lucy A. Manchester 17 RI, James Manchester 13 RI, Stephen Manchester 21 MA, Alexander Manchester 28 RI, Reuben Downing 30 MA, & Nancy Downing 27 RI. They are next door to the Hoyt family, and also to the family of Silas Manchester age 37; Silas may be a son of Benjamin & Lucy, as three of the individuals in that household appear to be living with Benjamin in 1860.

In 1860 Benjamin is age 72, widowed and "infirm," living at Fall River, Bristol Co., MA. The census identifies his birthplace as Tiverton, RI. In the household with him are the following individuals, all surname Manchester: Delaney 40 (b Tiverton, RI), Mary 40 (b Tiverton, RI), Stephen 38 (b Fall River, MA), Mary A. 30 (b Fall River, MA), Eleanor 22 (b Tiverton, RI), Emeline 18 (b Tiverton, RI), Lucy 25 (b Fall River, MA), James 20 (b Fall River, MA), & Almira 13 (b Fall River, MA). Of these individuals, Mary, Emeline, & Almira were likely in the household of Silas Manchester in 1850.

I am not absolutely sure how many of these individuals belong to Benjamin & Lucy, but based on the 1850 & 1860 census data, I have made an assumption that they probably had at least these six children, as listed in this family group. Alexander may also be theirs, also possibly Nancy. (This family needs more research.)

As noted by genealogist John Redfern, Benjamin and his sister Meribah are mentioned in the 17 Feb 1812 will of Mary (Borden) Sherman of Tiverton.

Benjamin married Lusannah "Lucy" A. Cook Abt 1811. Lusannah (daughter of Abner Cook and Elizabeth Francis) was born 7 Sep 1792, Tiverton, RI; died 28 Aug 1854. [Group Sheet]

2. Delaney Manchester was born Abt 1820, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI.
3. Stephen Manchester was born Between 1822 and 1829, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA.
4. Mary A. Manchester was born Between 1827 and 1830, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA.
5. James Manchester was born Between 1830 and 1837, RI or MA.
6. Lucy A. Manchester was born Between 1833 and 1835, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA.

Notes:

John Manchester was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and a Pensioner (Pension file #W20233).

He testified on behalf of Thomas Remington's military service at the latter's pension hearing in 1832. Here is part of the transcript: "I myself enlisted in a Company of Artillery in the Rhode Island State service Commanded by Ebinezer Adams, then stationed at said Tiverton, some time in June in the year one thousand Seven-hundred and Seventy eight, and the aforesaid Thomas Remington at that time belonged to the same company and served in it to the time of my discharge, which was in the month of March following. I had a brother named Benjamin who enlisted in said Company in the month of March preceding the June in which I enlisted, and recollect that said Thomas Remington enlisted in said Company at the time my said Brother did."

John married Mary Brayton 24 Apr 1785, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI. Mary (daughter of David Brayton and Deborah Borden) was born 28 Dec 1757, Newport, RI; died Aft 5 Nov 1838. [Group Sheet]

Mary (Brayton) Manchester's sworn statement of 5 Nov 1838 is included in her husband's Revolutionary War Pension File. It gives her husband's dates of birth and death, her date and location of birth, her maiden name, and their date of marriage.

I am not sure whether Peleg actually belongs here, because his birth is not in the Tiverton vital records along with the other children in this family group (needs more research).

Peleg married Margaret Coggeshall Bef 1755. Margaret was born 1732, Little Compton, RI. [Group Sheet]

The Brayton plaque at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery identifies David's parents as Benjamin & Mary.

David married Deborah Borden 25 Nov 1742, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI. Deborah (daughter of Thomas Borden and Mary Gifford) was born Abt 1720; died Aft 24 May 1760; was buried , Pleasant View Cemetery, Stone Church Rd., Tiverton, RI. [Group Sheet]

John was executor of his father's will.

Tiverton Deed Book 1 has a deed dated 27 Jan 1754, naming John Manchester of Tiverton and his son Isaac of Tiverton. Does this pertain to this particular John Manchester? See elsewhere on this family tree, John Manchester born c1688.

John married Phebe GRAY 22 Mar 1718/19, Tiverton, RI. Phebe (daughter of Edward GRAY and Mary SMITH) was born 6 Sep 1699, Tiverton, RI. [Group Sheet]
