Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Benjamin ELSBREE was born 11 Oct 1807, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA (son of Joshua ELSBREE and Rhoda BRIGHTMAN); died 28 May 1856, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA.

    Notes:

"Benjamin Elsbree, stonecutter, house New Boston" is listed in the Fall River City Directory of 1853.

In the 1840 census, there are five Elsbra (Elsbree) family heads listed in Fall River: Hannah (female age 30-40 with two young females and a young male), Henry, Aaron, Benjamin, and Joseph.

    Benjamin's household is as follows: 1 FWM<5, 1 FWM 30-39, 2 FWF 5-9, 1 FWF 20-29.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin Ellsbree is age 36 MA and his wife Ruth is age 32 MA. Their ages do not agree with their marriage record, as he was 40 and she was 35 when they married in 1848. In the household with them are the following: Emery Read 15 MA, Abel Read 15 MA, & Joshua Ellsbree 10 MA. Benjamin is a stone cutter. (In 1860 Ruth is age 44, a widow, and living with Abel Davis and family, next to Emory Davis and family, at Fall River.)

In the 1855 Massachusetts State Census, Benjamin Elsbree is age 48 and wife Ruth is 42. With them are Emery and Abel Davis, both 19, and Sarah Elsbree, 21. Benjamin is a fisherman.

Benjamin Elsbree died at age 48 y 7 m, of typhoid fever. The death record identifies his birthplace as Fall River, and his parents as Joshua & Rhoda Elsbree (Fall River Vol.102: Pg.69), as does the record of his second marriage (to Ruth [Read] Davis) in 1848. (Fall River Vol.37: Pg.78)

Benjamin married Hannah BUTTS 13 May 1832, Troy, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA. Hannah was born Abt 1810, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; died 14 Sep 1845, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Hannah BUTTS was born Abt 1810, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; died 14 Sep 1845, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA.

    Notes:

Hannah Elsbree, wife of Benjamin, died at Fall River at age 35, cause of death -- consumption (Fall River vital records, vol. 20 p. 50).

She may be a descendant of Thomas Butts & Elizabeth Lake, the first Butts family in southeastern MA and RI.

As yet I have been unable to determine Hannah's parentage. Her death record says she was born at Fall River.

The 1810 census shows a "David Butt" at Troy, Bristol Co., MA; he could be Hannah's father. According to an online tree, this couple was David Butts and Rebecca Crapo (dtr of Francis Crapo and Margaret Beale). The census data shows the household consisted of 3 males under 10, one male 10-15, and one male 45+; 2 females under 10, one female 10-15, and one female 26-44.

It is known that this couple had a daughter Margaret born 1805 in Fall River; she married Philip Cowan in 1823 and died in 1883 at age 77 y 9 m.

A David Butts of Freetown married Content Cleveland in 1790.

In 1820 there's also a Benjamin Butt in Freetown who has 2 females under 10.

    Children:
    1. Eliza Ann ELSBREE was born 5 Nov 1832, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; died 4 Jan 1913, Providence, RI; was buried , Oakland Cemetery, Cranston, RI.
    2. Sarah Elsbree was born 28 Mar 1834, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; died 13 Apr 1856, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA.
    3. Joseph Henry Elsbree was born 22 Oct 1835.
    4. 1. Joshua Elsbree was born Abt 1840, MA; died 23 May 1863, August Co., VA; was buried , Staunton National Cemetery, Staunton, VA.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Joshua ELSBREE was born 6 Apr 1775, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA (son of Boomer ELSBREE and Hannah LUTHER); died 7 May 1839, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; was buried , North Burial Ground, Fall River, MA.

    Notes:

The 1840 Federal Census at Troy (Fall River), Bristol Co., MA, has a listing for Joshua Elsbree. This may be our ancestor, although the age may be a bit off; I have estimated both his birth year and death year. The household in 1840 consists of: 1 M 15<20, 1 M 20<30, 1 M 50<60, 1 F 15<20, and 1 F 50<60. Joshua is listed next to Ephraim Boomer.

However, "The Luther Genealogy" p. 279 says Joshua died/was bur 7 May 1839. This appears to be confirmed by his gravestone in North Burial Ground, Fall River.

Joshua married Rhoda BRIGHTMAN 16 Mar 1800, Freetown, Bristol Co., MA. Rhoda (daughter of Henry BRIGHTMAN and Mary READ) was born 2 Jul 1774, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; died 24 Aug 1854, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; was buried , North Burial Ground, Fall River, MA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Rhoda BRIGHTMAN was born 2 Jul 1774, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA (daughter of Henry BRIGHTMAN and Mary READ); died 24 Aug 1854, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; was buried , North Burial Ground, Fall River, MA.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Rhoda (Brightman) Ellsbree is age 77, living at Fall River, MA, with Samuel R. Brightman and family. This could be her nephew or son-in-law. There are several other Brightman families nearby.

Rhoda Elsbree died at Fall River on 24 Aug 1854 at age 81 y 1 m. She died of "old age." The death record identifies her parents as "Henry & Maria," no other surname or maiden name given (Fall River Vol.84: Pg.67). I found Rhoda's maiden name on several trees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect.

Her gravestone says she died on 23 Aug 1854.

    Notes:

At the time of their marriage, Joshua & Rhoda were both of Freetown.

    Children:
    1. Hannah Elsbree was born Abt. 15 June 1801, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; died 16 Aug 1858, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA.
    2. Henry Elsbree was born 10 Apr 1802, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; died 24 Jan 1882, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; was buried , North Burial Ground, Fall River, MA.
    3. John F. Elsbree was born 9 Jun 1806, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; died 17 Jan 1844, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA.
    4. 2. Benjamin ELSBREE was born 11 Oct 1807, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; died 28 May 1856, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA.
    5. Joseph Elsbree was born 21 Jul 1810, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA; died 17 Aug 1886, Fall River, MA; was buried , Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River, MA.
    6. Ruth Elsbree was born 21 Jul 1810, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Boomer ELSBREE was born 1 Jan 1754, Freetown, Bristol Co., MA (son of Ephraim ELSBREE, Jr. and Jemima SHEPHERD); died 5 May 1830.

    Notes:

Boomer Elsbree is listed as "cousin" in the 1759 will of Lydia Boomer of Freetown, MA. She was his grand-aunt.

Boomer Elsbree, listed as Bomer Elesbery, served as a Revolutionary War soldier. He was a Corporal in Captain Joseph Durfee's company at Freetown. He was also a Colonel in Pope's regiment. He was engaged 7 Dec 1776 and discharged 17 Dec 1776, during which time he served 10 days when the company marched to RI on an alarm. I don't the other dates during which he may have served -- needs more research.

In the 1790 Federal Census, Boomer Elsberry is listed as a resident of Freetown, MA. His household consists of: 2 FWM 16+, 4 FWM <16, and 4 FWF. Possibly the two FWMs 16 and over are Boomer himself and his son Joshua. It appears that there are 4 more sons and three daughters, plus his wife, most likely.

In the 1800 Federal Census at Freetown, Bristol Co., MA, Boomer Elsbree and household are listed as follows: 3 males <10, 1 male 10<16, 3 males 16<26, 1 male >45, 1 female 10<16, and 1 female >45; no people of color are indicated. If all these individuals are the immediate family, we can assume that in 1800 Boomer had at least 7 sons and 1 daughter living at home. This needs more research.

Boomer is listed next to Joseph Brightman 3rd.

Ephraim Elsbree is also listed in Freetown. This may be Boomer's father, or possibly another relative.

In 1810, Boomer Elsbra and family are in Somerset, MA. There are 9 individuals in the household, including only one daughter who must be Mercy..

In 1820 Boomer and family are in Troy, Bristol Co., MA (Fall River). In addition to Boomer and Hannah, there are 3 young males in the household -- probably Edumund, Aaron, and Thomas. I don't see evidence of Rebecca.

I am not sure about whether the last two children really belong here, but they are included in "The Luther Genealogy" p. 280. They don't appear to be in the censuses with the family in 1810 or 1820.

According to family notes, "Boomer was given half the farm from the shore to Elsbree St. Boomer sold it to a Brownell for $1200. Boomer and Brownell went to Tolland, Conn. to settle . . . "

Boomer married Hannah LUTHER 20 Dec 1770, Freetown, Bristol Co., MA. Hannah (daughter of Nathaniel LUTHER, Jr. and Eleanor BOOMER) was born 18 Jul 1757, Swansea, MA; died 5 May 1830. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Hannah LUTHER was born 18 Jul 1757, Swansea, MA (daughter of Nathaniel LUTHER, Jr. and Eleanor BOOMER); died 5 May 1830.

    Notes:

Notes from "The Luther Genealogy" p. 278: Hannah started her family at an extremely young age; lived with her husband in Tolland, CT, for a while; many hundreds of her descendants have their family information on file among the records of Luther family compiler John Francis Elsbree (1912-1994) of Brighton, MA; he was a researcher and genealogist of note, having worked many years on the Elsbree and collateral families.

From the Swansea VRs p. 80: Daughter of Nathaniel Luther and Elliner his wife, Born July ye 18:1757 on a monday

    Notes:

Boomer & Hannah were both of Freetown at the time of their marriage. They were married by George Brightman, Esq.

  3. 10.  Henry BRIGHTMAN was born Abt 1742, Freetown, Bristol Co., MA (son of Joseph BRIGHTMAN, Jr. and Rebecca HILL); died 26 May 1825.

    Notes:

I think the following data pertains to this particular Henry Brightman, our ancestor (My mom Edna's ancestral line):

Henry Brightman of Freetown, MA, was a Sergeant in Capt. Joseph Durfee's co; in this position he served three months, from 9 Apr to 9 Jul 1778. He was also a Captain in Col. Livingston's regiment, serving one month, 2 Jun to Jul 2 1779 at Freetown and RI. Henry was also Captain, 10th co., 2nd Bristol Co., MA, regiment.
