Notes from "The Luther Genealogy" p. 278: Hannah started her family at an extremely young age; lived with her husband in Tolland, CT, for a while; many hundreds of her descendants have their family information on file among the records of Luther family compiler John Francis Elsbree (1912-1994) of Brighton, MA; he was a researcher and genealogist of note, having worked many years on the Elsbree and collateral families.

Boomer & Hannah were both of Freetown at the time of their marriage. They were married by George Brightman, Esq.

Notes:

Nathaniel and his first wife, Sarah Luther, were third cousins. They had four children, including a set of twins, but it appears that most or all of the children died young.

Nathaniel and his second wife, Eleanor Boomer, were first cousins.

Nathaniel lived in Swansea and was a member of the Baptist Church there. According to the church record books, Nathaniel & Eleanor were married 30 Nov 1751. However, the Swansea VRs give the date as 2 Jan 1752.

Nathaniel married Eleanor BOOMER Abt 30 Nov 1751. Eleanor (daughter of Matthew BOOMER and Hannah HATHAWAY) was born 8 Jan 1727/28. [Group Sheet]

Eleanor was Nathaniel's first cousin.

Eleanor (Boomer) Luther is mentioned in the will of her uncle, Joshua Boomer of Freetown, and in the will of Lydia Boomer -- probably her aunt.

Nathaniel married Mercy BOOMER 4 Jan 1715/16, Freetown, Bristol Co., MA. Mercy (daughter of Matthew BOOMER, Jr. and Hannah CHURCH) was born 16 Mar 1693/94, Freetown, Bristol Co., MA; died Between 1 Apr 1755 - 2 Nov 1756, MA. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Mercy is a 5th-generation Mayflower descendant, through her mother Hannah (Church) Boomer.

I am not sure if this birth date for Mercy is correct -- needs more research (source: Rootsweb's Worldconnect). "The Luther Genealogy" p. 188 says she was born 16 Nov 1694.

Mercy is mentioned as Mary (or Marcy?) Luther in the will of her brother, Joshua Boomer. He also mentions his sister Mary Elsbree, so it is clear these are two sisters.

Mercy was executor of her husband's will as of 1 Apr 1755. It appears that she died before 2 Nov 1756, as a document of that date appoints Elisha Mason of Swansea to be executor of Nathaniel's will, as his widow/executor Mercy Luther has since died. A Jan 1759 document refers to a legacy she and her husband had left for the care of their daughter Hannah, who is "non compos."

Matthew and Hannah had 7 children as listed in the book Mayflower Families Fifth Generation Descendants, 1700-1880, Richard Warren, Vol 18, p 295 (this is viewable at americanancestors.org).

Matthew married Hannah HATHAWAY 28 Sep 1720, Freetown, MA. Hannah (daughter of John HATHAWAY and Joanna POPE) was born 16 Feb 1691/92, Dartmouth, MA; died Aft. 1 Feb 1772, Freetown, MA. [Group Sheet]

The marriage record says Hannah was "of Tiverton."

Hammah Boomer is mentioned as a daughter in her father's will dated 11 July 1732 at Dartmouth, MA.

John married Hopestill BUTTERWORTH 25 Jan 1687/88, Swansea, MA. Hopestill (daughter of John BUTTERWORTH and Sarah FREEMAN) was born Abt Mar 1664/65; was buried , Kickemuit Cemetery, Warren, RI. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Hopestill's maiden name, as the wife of John Luther, has been established through her father's will, in which Deacon John Butterworth mentions his grandson, Nathaniel Luther, as "son of my daughter Hopestill, wife of John Luther."

Matthew's will, dated 8 Oct 1732, proved 20 Mar 1744. Mentions wife Hannah; eldest son Matthew, sons Caleb and Joshua; five surviving daughters: Lydia, Mercy Luther, Deboral Mason, Ruth Salisbury, and Mary; and children of deceased daughter Hannah Jenckes. (source: Payne-Joyce Genealogy online)

Matthew Boomer d. bef 20 Mar 1743/4; son of Matthew Boomer. On 16 Nov 1724 Matthew Boomer of Freetown, yeoman, appointed his son "Joshuay" Boomer as his attorney regarding his mother's right in the estate of Caleb Church of Watertown. The will of Matthew Boomer of Freetown, yeoman, dated 8 Oct. 1732, sworn 20 March 1743, names wife Hannah; sons Joshua, Caleb and Matthew; eldest dau. Lydia not married; daus. Mercy Luther, Deborah Mason, Ruth Salsbury; also Benjamin Jenks, Lydia Jenks and Joseph Jenks, children of deceased dau. Hannah Jenks; grandson Matthew Luther; dau. Mary Elsberry. (needs research to verify)

- Matthew and his [father] Matthew are on the 10/17/1688 tax list for Freetown, MA. The 6/25/1690 list gives only one Matthew Boomer - author cites Richard L. Bowen, Early Rehoboth , Rehoboth MA 1945, 1:86-88.
- On 1/5/1692, ack. 11/20/1694, "Matthew Bommer Sr. of Freetown sold to Matthew Bommer Jr. of Freetown one freeman's lot in Freetown where said Matthew Bommer Junr. now dweleth" - Bristol Co. LR 1:301.

Matthew married Hannah CHURCH Abt 1688. Hannah (daughter of Caleb CHURCH and Joanna SPRAGUE) was born 1 Nov 1668, Hingham, Plymouth Co., MA; died Aft 8 Oct 1732. [Group Sheet]

The probate documents of John Hathaway of Dartmouth dated 11 July 1732 mention Hannah Boomer as a daughter.

"John, the oldest son, married Johanna Pope, daughter of Thomas Pope, and Sarah “Jenne,” both well known families in Plymouth. (A well preserved Pope cradle of 1648 is exhibited in this building.) His second wife was Patience. The first wife had six children, and the second ten, and of these, ten were sons."

"John Hathaway’s land, chiefly on the west side of the Acushnet River, was in several tracts, and in area was about as extensive as that of his brother Thomas. His homestead extended from the river out to Mt. Pleasant Street, and began at a point 330 feet south of Davis Street at the north line of the Coffin farm, and extended north as far as Brooklawn Park. On the water front of this farm are located today the Whitman, Manomet, Nonquitt and Nashawena mills. In the northeast corner on the river was a landing place as early as 1730, and here John McPherson started the village of Belleville in 1774."

"John Hathaway had another tract of 200 acres on the south side of Hathaway Road, and extending west from Shawmut Avenue to the ledge. On Shawmut its frontage is over half a mile. On the north side of the Tarkiln Hill Road were large tracts extending down from the hill west beyond the railroad, and east about the same distance. The house that he gave his son Arthur stands there today, and is still occupied. Arthur early moved to Rochester, and owned a large tract there. John also owned a large tract to the south of Sassaquin Pond, the east part of which became the farm of Jonathan Tobey."

"In 1708 came the first clash between the Presbyterians and the Quakers, which resulted in the great struggle in 1723 when the English king, George I, overruled the general court of Massachusetts and declared the Quakers entitled to freedom from contributing toward the maintenance of Congregational churches and ministers. At the opening of the contest, which was urged chiefly in Dartmouth, a petition signed by eighty-six men who were Quakers and Baptists, was sent to the general court protesting against the church tax. This was signed by John and Thomas Hathaway. The position of Thomas can be easily understood, because his wife belonged to the leading Quaker family of Nantucket. John’s first wife was a sister of Captain Seth Pope, who was a vigorous Puritan. The second wife hasn’t yet been identified, but the second marriage may have led to his favor for the Quakers."

"John Hathaway lived out most of his life in the Town of Dartmouth. His first wife, Joanna, died at the age of thirty-seven, leaving John, age forty-two, with children ages eleven, nine, seven, five, two, and one. In nine months he married again, and had ten more children.

John Hathaway's first wife, Joanna Pope, belonged to another family that moved to Dartmouth in its earlier days. When she was about eighteen years old, King Phillip's War broke out. The Indians attacked the frontier town of Dartmouth, killing two of Joanna's brothers and one sister-in-law, before they could reach the security of a garrison house. Everyone, including the remaining Popes and the Hathaways, left Dartmouth, returning in a few years to rebuild.

When John Hathaway married his second wife, Patience Hunnewell, he was forty-three, she twenty-two. She probably came from Scarborough, in the District of Maine. By the time Patience gave birth to her tenth child, she was forty-three, John was sixty-three. All sixteen children lived to adulthood, and fourteen married.

In 1708, when a Congregational Church was organized in Dartmouth, John Hathaway was one of eighty-six persons petitioning the Province against paying the church tax. John was probably a member of the Society of Friends, which had organized its first meeting in Dartmouth in 1699. "
