In the 1860 Federal Census, David & Meribah Shaw, ages 53 & 43, are living at Tiverton, Newport Co., RI. They have three children in the household: Maria Martin 8, David F. Martin 5, & Meribah A. Shaw 1; all b RI except Meribah's husband, b England.

David married Meribah Manchester 14 Apr 1858, Fall River, Bristol Co., RI. Meribah (daughter of David Manchester and Hope Stafford) was born 17 Sep 1816, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 17 May 1888, Fall River, Bristol Co., MA. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Mary B. Cogshall is age 36, living at Tiverton, RI. With her are three sons: John 6, Thomas 4, & Joshua 1. Nearby is Phebe Cogshall, 72, probably her mother-in-law.

In the 1860 Federal Census, she and her husband, David Shaw, have two Martin children from her previous marriage. They also have a one-year-old daughter, Meribah. (see notes for David Shaw)

In the 1870 Federal Census, Meribah Shaw, age 53, is still living at Tiverton. In the household are two sons from a previous marriage, Thomas 24 and Joshua P. 21 (?) Coggeshall; and two of her children by David Shaw, Meribah A. 11 & James A. Shaw 8.

In 1880 she is age 63, still at Tiverton; marital status is widowed. Still with her are three sons: Thomas D. Coggeshall, 34; Joshua P. Coggeshall, 31; and James A. Shaw, 18, a fisherman. They are living next door to son John S. Coggeshall and his family, including an uncle Stephen Manchester, probably Meribah's brother.

From the census data, Mary B. & Meribah appear to be the same individual. Her full name may have been Meribah Brayton Manchester. However, according to Carla Phillips' data, they are two distinct individuals. This needs more research to resolve.

He died at age 83.

David married Hope Stafford Bef 1816. Hope (daughter of Stephen Stafford and Abigail Durfee) was born 17 Feb 1787, Tiverton, RI; died 12 Sep 1863, Tiverton, RI. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

John Manchester was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and a Pensioner (Pension file #W20233).

He testified on behalf of Thomas Remington's military service at the latter's pension hearing in 1832. Here is part of the transcript: "I myself enlisted in a Company of Artillery in the Rhode Island State service Commanded by Ebinezer Adams, then stationed at said Tiverton, some time in June in the year one thousand Seven-hundred and Seventy eight, and the aforesaid Thomas Remington at that time belonged to the same company and served in it to the time of my discharge, which was in the month of March following. I had a brother named Benjamin who enlisted in said Company in the month of March preceding the June in which I enlisted, and recollect that said Thomas Remington enlisted in said Company at the time my said Brother did."

John married Mary Brayton 24 Apr 1785, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI. Mary (daughter of David Brayton and Deborah Borden) was born 28 Dec 1757, Newport, RI; died Aft 5 Nov 1838. [Group Sheet]

Mary (Brayton) Manchester's sworn statement of 5 Nov 1838 is included in her husband's Revolutionary War Pension File. It gives her husband's dates of birth and death, her date and location of birth, her maiden name, and their date of marriage.
