  1. 2.  William Ellery Manchester was born 17 May 1821, MA or RI (son of Ellery Manchester and Nancy Cory).

    Notes:

    According to the 1850 Federal Census, William E. Manchester was born in RI. In this census he is age 29, a grocer, living at Providence with his wife Sarah and two young sons, William A. & George W.

    In 1860, William's birthplace is given as MA. He appears to have remarried to Maria J., age 26 in thie census. They are living at Providence, and have three children in the household: William A. 13, George W. 11, & Franklin P. 6. I am placing Franklin on the family tree as a son of Maria.

    William married Sarah Unknown Abt 1845. Sarah was born Abt 1826, RI; died Bef 1854. [Group Sheet]

    I have made an assumption that Sarah died before William's second marriage.

  1. 4.  Ellery Manchester was born 13 Jun 1779, Tiverton, RI (son of Philip Manchester and Eliphal Cory); died Between 1 Jun 1850 and 1860.

    Notes:

    At a legal meeting of the Wesport, MA, town council, [held May 12,1817 in the Town House], Ellery Manchester was appointed one of nine fence viewers for the town.

    In the 1850 Federal Census at Westport, MA, Ellery is 68 and his wife Lucy is 54. Their son Benjamin is 12. The family is next to Peleg & Abigail Manchester; Peleg is probably a cousin.

    In James Arnold's Vital Record of RI, Ellery's birth year is transcribed as 1799; however, in birth order it should be 1779.

    Ellery married Nancy Cory Between 1806 and 1809, Westport, MA. Nancy (daughter of Benjamin Cory and Anna Sisson) was born 1782, Westport, MA; died Bef 1837. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    The following entries suggest that Ellery and Nancy became members of the church in May 1806, and that they were already married at that time.

    He is probably the one who died 21 Aug 1820, three months after his brother Isaac (see Records of Constant Hart, Genealogies of RI Families, Vol. II, p. 651).
